The poster and plots of this movie don't seem to bring anything new to the table. The trailer tells you what the first act is, its plot and trigger. Surely you can imagine what the third act will be like, its resolution. So, why see this production? Definitely for the second act and its actors.

SYNOPSIS

David Cottom (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julia Roberts) are two ex-husbands with a daughter named Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) who notifies them via e-mail that she will marry a young man she met 37 days ago from the island of Bali, Indonesia.

Her idea to prevent that marriage will make them unite physically and in thought on a trip to the shores of the Indian Ocean and try to make her daughter desist from getting married in a paradisiacal environment that rather invites the bride and groom to dive into the deep waters of eternal love.

After 25 years without seeing or interacting with each other, David and Georgia will find themselves involved in comical situations, some generated by themselves and others due to being in a different culture and habits foreign to their upbringing.

A SECOND ACT THAT JUSTIFIES TIME ON THE COUCH

Probably when we see that a movie is framed in the genre of "romantic comedy" it is not so appealing to us, since we have seen several that even seem a little bland, slow and of low quality. That's why I think Ol Parker's decisions as director were wise.

For example, he selected a couple of iconic actors, who have posed in front of the cameras with several awards for their performances in the past, and easily recognizable to the public. They have already worked together and know each other, which I think is conducive to having that chemistry between the two for this role. The last one I saw with them together was where he played a TV show host and she his director, and they must face a live kidnapping during the show. But I think there are more movies together.

Another wise decision is the location. "My God, swallow me up and throw me up in Bali." That place is incredible. The locations are gorgeous. Why do I think it was a good idea? Having urban settings would look a lot like what we still see in our day-to-day lives. Who couldn't use a trip to a nice beach paradise? Even if it's just to try to eat a cake from a wedding we think shouldn't exist. Even in its presentation, the time in which the sites are shown is not abused, making it look like a History Channel documentary. They even show you part of the scenery in some of the frames with dialogue while they tell you the story. Great.

I thought the humor was very good. Yes, there are several slapstick that can make you smile, like the armrest thing, a bump on the nose over there, turbulence on the plane, etc. But the one I liked the most was that sarcasm with which David and Georgia (especially him) addressed each other, so much so that it dominates my choice of phrases. At the same time, it speaks to the ability that both actors have at this stage in their careers, and that this kind of material still has hope over time if the right choices are made. Even in exposing what an ex-couple might have left unsaid to each other and how it might come about, that exchange of words doesn't become too hostile thanks to both acting in a way that the tone doesn't go beyond decent.

THE SCENE

The late night party they attend I think solidifies the bride and groom's romantic relationship and also confirms what is going on between David and Georgia. What the viewer may come to feel also makes them confirm or not their theory of what is going on in a fun environment, without tension, and where everyone tries to show themselves as they are helped by the consumption of alcohol.

MY OPINION

Yes, it is a movie I would recommend. Very natural and funny performances, free of unnecessary erotic scenes, landscapes that delight the senses, dynamic, and with those flashes of general culture where you can even learn about the customs that other human beings have that may seem very different from yours, but will agree with many, for example, we like to see George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. El poster y argumentos de ésta película parecen no aportar nada nuevo. El trailer te dice cuál es el primer acto, su planteamiento y el detonante. De seguro podrás imaginar cómo será el tercer acto, su resolución. Entonces, ¿por qué ver ésta producción? Definitivamente por el segundo acto y sus actores.

SINOPSIS

David Cottom (George Clooney) y Georgia (Julia Roberts) son dos ex esposos con una hija llamada Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) la cual les notifica via correo electrónico que se casará con un joven que conoció hace 37 días oriundo de la isla de Bali, en Indonesia.

Su idea de impedir ese matrimonio hará que se unan físicamente y en pensamiento en un viaje a orillas del océano índico e intentar que su enamorada hija desista de contraer nupcias en un entorno paradisíaco que más bien invita a los novios a sumergirse en las profundas aguas del amor eterno.

Luego de 25 años sin verse ni interactuar, David y Georgia se verán envueltos en situaciones cómicas, algunas generadas por ellos mismos y otras por estar en una cultura diferente y hábitos ajenos a su crianza.

UN SEGUNDO ACTO QUE JUSTIFICA EL TIEMPO EN EL SOFÁ

Probablemente cuando vemos que una película está enmarcada en el género de "comedia romántica" no nos resulta tan atrayente, en vista que hemos vista varias que incluso parecen un poco sosas, lentas y de baja calidad. Por eso, me parece que las decisiones que tomó Ol Parker como director fueron atinadas.

Por ejemplo, seleccionó una pareja de actores íconos, que han posado ante las cámaras con varios premios por sus actuaciones en el pasado, y fácilmente reconocible al público. Ya han trabajado juntos y se conocen, lo cual creo que favorece a que haya esa química entre ambos para este papel. La última que vi con ellos juntos era donde él encarnaba un host de un programa de televisión y ella su directora, y deben encarar un secuestro en vivo durante el programa. Pero creo que hay más películas juntos.

Otra decisión atinada es el lugar. "Dios mio, trágame tierra y vomítame en Bali". Ese lugar es increíble. Las locaciones son hermosísimas. ¿Por qué creo que fue una buena idea? Tener escenarios urbanos se parecería mucho a lo que seguimos viendo en nuestro día a día. ¿A quién no le vendría bien un viaje a una buena playa paradisíaca? Así sea para tratar de comernos un pastel de una boda que creemos que no debería existir. Incluso, en su presentación no se abusa del tiempo en que muestran los sitios, haciéndolo parecer un documental de History Channel. Incluso, en algunos encuadres con diálogos te muestran parte del paisaje mientras te cuentan la historia. Genial.

Creo que el humor fue muy bueno. Sí, hay varios slapstick que pueden hacerte sonreír, como el tema del apoyabrazos, un golpe en la nariz por allí, turbulencias en el avión, etc. Pero el que a mi más me gustó fue ese sarcasmo con el que David y Georgia (especialmente él) se dirigían el uno al otro, tanto que predomina en mi selección de frases. A la vez, esto habla de la capacidad que tienen ambos actores en ésta etapa de sus carreras, y que éste tipo de material aún tiene esperanza a través del tiempo si se toman las decisiones acertadas. Incluso, al exponer lo que una ex pareja pudo haber quedado sin decirse el uno al otro y cómo podría darse, ese intercambio de palabras no se torna demasiado hostil gracias a que ambos actúan de una forma que el tono no se excede de lo decente.

LA ESCENA

La fiesta nocturna a la que asisten creo que afianza la relación romántica de los novios y también confirma lo que está sucediendo entre David y Georgia. Lo que el espectador puede llegar a sentir también hace que confirme o no su teoría de lo que está pasando en un entorno divertido, sin tensiones, y donde cada quien trata de mostrarse tal cual es ayudado por el consumo de alcohol.

MI OPINIÓN

Sí, es una película que recomendaría. Actuaciones muy naturales y divertidas, libre de escenas eróticas innecesarias, paisajes que deleitan los sentidos, dinámica, y con esos destellos de cultura general donde incluso puedes enterarte de las costumbres que tienen otros seres humanos que pueden que parezcan muy diferentes a las tuyas, pero coincidirán con muchas, por ejemplo, nos agrada ver a George Clooney y Julia Roberts.

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, divertidas, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

"Estás en la cocina. Eso es nuevo" (David).

"No estaba dormida. Estaba atacándote" (Georgia)

"Ya se han perdido bastantes cosas hoy" (Gede)

Una película para entretener, donde la calidad de ambos protagonistas hace que todo sea natural sin sobreactuaciones y surfeando con éxito cada ola que se presenta en la historia. Deleitarás tus retinas y aprenderás incluso algo de cultura general. No olvides quedarte hasta el final, porque los bloopers te sacaran algunas risas y confirmarán de que ambas estrellas disfrutaron mucho el proceso de éste producto. ¡Hasta entonces!
