The CineTV contest takes me back to the good old days when I was in high school and was introduced to K-drama by my friends. Gladly, I can clearly remember one of the Korean dramas that I have watched and how the movie played a part in my childhood days. I was just a teenager though and it was a movie for kids like me then.

Boys Over Flowers (2009)

This movie follows a girl named Geum Jan Di who won a scholarship award into one of the biggest schools in South Korea, Shin Hwa High school which is made for the children of the wealthiest people of South Korea. In Shin Hwa high school, a boy named Gu Jun Pyo was one of the most popular and richest students, bullies Geum Jan Di and the both of them have had crazy experiences and moments together. In a nutshell, Gu Jun Pyo was a bully.

Eventually, Gu Jun Pyo always wants to see Geum Jan Di but she has a crush on Yoon Ji Hoo, Gu Jun Pyo’s best friend. Finally, Geum Jan Di breaks into the clique of those four friends and fell in love with Gu Jun Pyo after she confessed her feelings to Yoon Ji Hoo but doesn’t reciprocate. Gu Jun Pyo and Geum Jan Di became great lovers but their parents never wanted them for each other because of their wealth status. These two young ones faced so many problems especially from those who do not want them to be together but their love is strong and they defeated them.
The movie ended by the beach where Gu Jun Pyo asked Geum Jan Di to marry him but they both concluded on pursuing their dreams before marriage.

My Review and Rating

When I heard my friends sing the name of Gu Jun Pyo into my head every time, I feel sad that I hadn’t watched the movie but I’m glad I eventually did and it resonates with my childhood days in high school where everyone had lovers or people they were dating. Actor Lee Min Ho played the role of Gu Jun Pyo in that movie and as long as he is in the movie, it will always be a yes for me.

About the characters, Lee Min Ho killed his role the most. This is not because I’m a fan of Lee Min Ho but because he played the role just exactly the way he was supposed to do it. He didn’t just get the lines but made sure that the way he walked, talked and acted in the movie brings out the characteristics of a rude, rich child that he is supposed to be.
Also, Koo Hye-sun who played Geum Jan Di was close to perfect. She acted like a real poor kid and did well with the role.

Ever since I’ve been watching this series because I’ve done that multiple times, I have always been interested in the love part. Apart from Geum Jan Di who crushes on Yoon Ji Hoo, he liked her too but he took that pain of not asking her out because he realized that Gu Jun Pyo, his friend loves her. How many friends can do that? This leaves me thinking about it all the time and leave me asking myself if I can do it for a friend.

Right now, I’m satisfied that I have given N honest review to a series I watched when I was much younger.

If there's a K-drama series I despised so much, it would have to be this one. Sure, like every other person, it was one of those movies that made me fall in love with K-drama. But the hardships these two went through were far too much for them to still want to pursue a relationship together.

Was a beautiful series but one I'd never willingly watch again. Lovely review.🌺
