Bargains. We have all taken advantage of one, and they are the reason some people lose their minds, go overboard with purchases and even get violent in order to get the product they want. One of the most globally recognized bargain seasons is Black Friday, which takes place in the United States. The impatience and desperation of people to take advantage of the offers are so great that, during the 24 hours it lasts, numerous incidents related to abuse and injuries have been reported.

Thanksgiving is a slasher horror film that takes the Black Friday craze to another level. It tells the story of a town that lives a tragedy after Thanksgiving dinner, when almost all the inhabitants concentrate in a department store with the idea of taking advantage of the Black Friday promotions. However, things get out of control and everyone's recklessness results in numerous fatalities. Some time later, on the anniversary of this tragedy, an avenger emerges, ready to make all those involved in the event pay for the deaths.

Directed by the renowned Eli Roth, this film came to me without much expectation. I knew it would be entertaining from the few reviews I had read about it; however, I also anticipated that it would be what I call a "churro", that is, a film that is somewhat absurd and without much content of value, but at the same time has the potential to be fun and entertaining to me. With that in mind, I have to say that Thanksgiving lived up to what little I expected of it. It's a full-fledged slasher: fun, gory, with teens running for their lives and the usual twist right at the conclusion.

In terms of story, the film doesn't stand out too much; it exploits one of the most anticipated dates for Americans and turns it almost into a farce. The plot unfolds in two parts: the first one is when the tragedy of Black Friday happens. This part serves as an introduction to the story, is where we meet the main characters, their lives, and witness one of the most illogical and funny killings I've seen in a department store. Up until the point where the tragedy happens, I was finding the film a bit bland; however, all the mess and over-the-top deaths set the film on a more chaotic and entertaining direction.

The second part of the film is the typical chase of the killer vs. the victims. This part has an erratic pace because some characters seemed a bit boring to me, but this is compensated by the brutality of the deaths. And that is undoubtedly the strong point of this production: it is full of eye-catching, ingenious and completely absurd deaths. After a good time of killing and chases, we reach the climax of the film, where the identity of the culprit is revealed. It was a surprise to see that they didn't go for the most obvious choice (they went for the second or third most obvious, but it's still recognizable) and the chase prior to the reveal was almost 10 out of 10.

Despite this, I must say that the ending, obviously removing the revelation of the killer's identity and what I already mentioned, was somewhat disappointing. The motives of the culprit, while valid, didn't make much sense and didn't square very well with what we saw in the first part of the film. This lack of coherence is present in several aspects of the film, so I can't say I was surprised by a bit of incoherence at the end either, but I still didn't like it. That, along with the shocking drops in pacing, undoubtedly represented the worst thing about the film for me. In these types of movies, I expect to stay entertained the whole time, and those pacing bumps caused me to lose interest in what I was watching and turn to my phone screen while waiting for something interesting to happen.

About the performances, there's not much to say; they were pretty average. Not that I expected much from them, so I wasn't disappointed by any of them. Although, they definitely weren't the best of their careers. It was nice to see Patrick Dempsey out of romantic comedies and Grey's Anatomy, although his character had some slightly questionable twists and decisions. But, as I mentioned, the story itself doesn't stand out too much, and that also applies to the characters and character building. They try to give a sense of justice to the killer, a somewhat twisted and nonsensical one, and that becomes the whole axis that moves the second part of the movie, but it's not a very good one and makes the whole story and characters feel empty.

Visually, it's where it excels the most for me. As I already mentioned, my favorite aspect of it is the deaths, and it's precisely because of how they are rendered that they managed to make a good impact on me. They are all graphic and gory, something nothing new for director Eli Roth, so it was a pleasure to see that he hasn't lost the ability to play with liters and liters of blood and to show us how absurdly funny slashers can be.

I can say, finally, that I enjoyed it, although it is certainly not a movie for all tastes. It has good and bad aspects, like everything else. However, if you are impressionable and don't like gore, there is no doubt that you will not find Thanksgiving entertaining. If, on the other hand, you are familiar with and enjoy the slasher genre, you will find some original and ridiculously funny kills in this production.

Una de las temporadas de ofertas más reconocidas a nivel global es la del Black Friday, que se lleva a cabo en los Estados Unidos. La impaciencia y desesperación de las personas por aprovechar las ofertas son tan grandes que, durante las 24 horas que dura, se han reportado numerosos incidentes relacionados con abusos y personas lesionadas.

Thanksgiving es una película de terror slasher que lleva la locura del Black Friday a otro nivel. En ella se cuenta la historia de un pueblo que vive una tragedia después de la cena de Acción de Gracias, cuando casi todos los habitantes se concentran en una tienda departamental con la idea de aprovechar las promociones del Black Friday. Sin embargo, las cosas se salen de control y la imprudencia de todos ocasiona un gran número de víctimas mortales. Tiempo después, en el aniversario de esta tragedia, surge un vengador, dispuesto a hacerles pagar por las muertes a todos los implicados en el suceso.

Dirigida por el reconocido Eli Roth, esta película llegó a mí sin causarme muchas expectativas. Sabía que sería entretenida por los pocos comentarios que había leído sobre ella; sin embargo, también anticipaba que sería lo que yo llamo un "churro", es decir, una película un tanto absurda y sin mucho contenido de valor, pero que a la vez tiene el potencial de resultarme divertida y entretenida. Teniendo esto en mente, debo decir que Thanksgiving cumplió con lo poco que esperaba de ella. Es un slasher con todas las de la ley: divertido, sangriento, con adolescentes corriendo por sus vidas y con el acostumbrado giro justo en la conclusión.

En cuestiones de historia, la película no sobresale demasiado; explota una de las fechas más esperadas por los estadounidenses y la convierte casi en una farsa. La trama se desarrolla en dos tiempos: el primero cuando sucede la tragedia del Black Friday. Esta parte sirve de introducción para la historia, es donde conocemos a los personajes principales, sus vidas y somos testigos de una de las matanzas más ilógicas y divertidas que he visto en una tienda departamental. Hasta el punto en que sucede la tragedia, la película me estaba pareciendo algo sosa; sin embargo, todo el desastre y las muertes exageradas encarrilaron la película hacia una dirección más caótica y entretenida.

La segunda parte de la película es la típica persecución del asesino vs. las víctimas. Esta parte tiene un ritmo errático porque algunos personajes me parecieron algo aburridos, pero esto se compensa con la brutalidad de las muertes. Y es que, sin duda, ese es el punto fuerte de esta producción: está llena de muertes vistosas, ingeniosas y completamente absurdas. Después de un buen rato de matanza y persecuciones, llegamos al clímax de la película donde se revela la identidad del culpable. Fue una sorpresa ver que no optaron por la opción más obvia (se decantaron por la segunda o tercera más obvia, pero aun así se reconoce) y la persecución previa a la revelación fue casi de 10.

A pesar de ello, debo decir que el final, quitando obviamente la revelación de la identidad del asesino y lo que ya mencioné, fue algo decepcionante. Los motivos del culpable, aunque válidos, no tenían mucho sentido y no cuadraban muy bien con lo que vimos en la primera parte de la película. Esta falta de coherencia está presente en varios aspectos de la película, por lo que tampoco puedo decir que me sorprendió un poco de incoherencia también al final, pero igual no me gustó. Eso, junto a las estrepitosas caídas en el ritmo, sin duda representaron lo peor de la película para mí. En este tipo de películas, espero mantenerme entretenida todo el tiempo, y esos baches de ritmo hicieron que perdiera el interés en lo que estaba viendo y acudiera a la pantalla de mi teléfono mientras esperaba a que sucediera algo interesante.

Sobre las actuaciones, no hay mucho que decir; fueron bastante regulares. Tampoco es que yo esperara mucho de ellas, por lo que no me sentí decepcionada por ninguna. Aunque, definitivamente, no fueron las mejores de sus carreras. Fue un gusto ver a Patrick Dempsey fuera de las comedias románticas y de Grey's Anatomy, aunque su personaje tuvo unos giros y decisiones un poco cuestionables. Pero, como ya mencioné, la historia en sí no destaca demasiado, y eso también aplica para los personajes y la construcción de estos. Intentan darle un sentido de justicia al asesino, uno algo retorcido y sin sentido, y eso se convierte en todo el eje que mueve la segunda parte de la película, pero no es uno muy bueno y hace que toda la historia y los personajes se sientan vacíos.

Visualmente, es en lo que más destaca para mí. Como ya mencioné, mi aspecto favorito de ella son las muertes, y es precisamente por cómo son plasmadas que lograron causarme un buen impacto. Todas son gráficas y sangrientas, algo nada nuevo para el director Eli Roth, por lo que fue un gusto ver que no ha perdido la capacidad para jugar con litros y litros de sangre y para mostrarnos lo absurdamente divertidos que pueden ser los slashers.

Puedo decir, finalmente, que la disfruté, aunque sin duda no es una película para todos los gustos. Tiene aspectos buenos y otros malos, como todo. Sin embargo, si son impresionables y no les gusta la sangre, no hay duda de que no encontrarán Thanksgiving entretenida. Si, por el contrario, están familiarizados y disfrutan del género slasher, encontrarán unas muertes originales y ridículamente divertidas en esta producción.
