One of my favourite sub-genres within horror is and always will be the Slasher. I don't know if it's the senseless killing, the stupidity of the victims or the superpowers of the killer that entertains me so much, but the truth is that I really enjoy watching these types of films, even though, honestly, very few of them are really good. A lot of this has to do with the fact that most of them tend to become franchises with so many instalments that they eventually lose all meaning. One of the best-known franchises in this sub-genre is Scream, which has now had six instalments.

The sixth installment of the franchise, released in 2023, is a direct sequel to the fifth and continues to star the Carpenter sisters. After surviving the Woodsboro massacre, they decide to move to New York City, unaware that the tragedy they were trying so hard to escape would sooner or later come knocking on their door again. This time, however, they not only find themselves in danger of being murdered, but also of being framed for the crimes of the previous installment.

While my favourite Slasher of all time will always be Halloween, Scream comes in a privileged, and well-earned, second place. So, as you can imagine, I've seen them all, even the uninteresting series they put out. When they announced they were bringing back the franchise, I was excited, and I found the previous installment entertaining and thought it was one of the better returns in the wave of Slashers being brought back. However, I can't say the same for Scream VI, which despite entertaining me, had several details that I found sillier than a Slasher normally is.

The film begins with a slightly more macabre tone than usual, presenting us with a couple of rather graphic murders, which made me think that this instalment was going to be something strong and full of gore elements. Unfortunately (or not), that was only the illusion at the beginning, as the rest of the film returned to the usual tone of the saga, with a chaotic rhythm caused by Ghostface's incessant chases, without abandoning that funny touch with sarcastic comments that has always characterised them.

If there's one thing I really like about these films, it's the self-awareness she has of herself. The fact that within the world of her world, there is "Stab " (a film franchise that is basically Scream), seems to me to be one of the best resources it has. In this sixth installment they use it very well, making countless sarcastic and witty comments about the clichés of the saga, the Slashers and even other film franchises like Avengers.

Perhaps that and the reveal of the assassin are the best parts of the film, as the rest is full of overblown incoherence, even for the genre. I know stupid decisions reign supreme in Slasher films, but trying to escape Ghostface by getting on the NYC underground, that's another level of stupidity. Not to mention the fact that the police take one of the Carpenter sisters as a suspect, when there's a ton of evidence that OBVIOUSLY she can't have anything to do with what's going on, beyond being just another victim.

But that's not the worst thing about Scream VI for me, I can tolerate that because as I said before, that's what Slashers are like and that's perhaps part of their charm, human stupidity. What I really found unforgivable is the fact that the final kill count was so low, considering Ghostface was quite active. It's supposed to be a slaughter, I don't want to see everyone survive, I want to see pretty much all the supporting and main characters die, not just the extras. There were several characters who got their fair share of slashes, but eventually it is revealed that they are miraculously alive.

About the central characters there's not much to say, the performances are generally pretty decent. I liked seeing Courtney Cox reprising her role as Gale, I also would have loved to see Neve Cambell return as Sidney, but the production refused to accept her pay terms, which was very unfortunate and made me miss the legendary "Hello, Sidney ". Although maybe that's just my nostalgia talking, because to be honest, both Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera do a good job, although I can't say the same about their other two partners (the twins), too genzies for my taste.

I must accept that in general terms it fulfils what it should be, I just wasn't as enchanted by it as I was with others, the immortal victim's thing really got to me and made my opinion of the film decline noticeably. Despite this, I can't stop recommending it, not only to those who are fans of this type of film, but also to those who want to start being one, as it is entertaining and has enough current elements to attract new generations.

Uno de mis subgéneros favoritos dentro de terror es y siempre será el Slasher. No sé si es la matanza sin sentido, la estupidez de las víctimas o los superpoderes del asesino lo que me entretiene tanto, pero la verdad es que disfruto muchísimo ver este tipo de películas, a pesar de que, honestamente, son muy pocas las que son realmente buenas. Mucho de esto tiene que ver con que la mayoría tienden a convertirse en franquicias con tantas entregas que eventualmente pierden todo el sentido. Una de las franquicias más conocidas de este subgénero es Scream, la cual ya cuenta con seis entregas.

La sexta entrega de la franquicia, estrenada este 2023, es una continuación directa de la quinta y sigue manteniendo como protagonistas a las hermanas Carpenter. Ambas, después de sobrevivir a la masacre ocurrida en Woodsboro, deciden mudarse a la ciudad de Nueva York, sin saber que la tragedia de la que tanto intentaban escapar, tarde o temprano, volvería a tocar a su puerta. Sin embargo, esta vez no solo se encuentran en peligro de ser asesinadas, sino también de ser inculpadas por los crímenes de la entrega anterior.

Si bien mi Slasher favorito de todos los tiempos siempre será Halloween, Scream se encuentra en un privilegiado y bien ganado, segundo lugar. Así que, como se pueden imaginar, las he visto todas, incluso la serie nada interesante que sacaron. Cuando anunciaron que retomarían la franquicia me emocioné y la entrega anterior la encontré entretenida y me pareció uno de los mejores regresos de la ola de Slashers que estaban siendo retomados. Sin embargo, no puedo decir lo mismo de Scream VI, la cual a pesar de haberme entretenido, tuvo varios detalles que me parecieron más tontos de lo que un Slasher normalmente es.

La película comienza con un tono un poco más macabro de lo habitual, presentándonos un par de asesinatos bastante gráficos, los cuales me hicieron pensar que esta entrega iba a ser algo fuerte e iba a estar llena de elementos gore. Lamentablemente (o no), esa fue solo la ilusión del inicio, ya que el resto de la película retomó el tono usual de la saga, con un ritmo caótico ocasionado por las incesantes persecuciones de Ghostface, sin abandonar ese toque divertido con comentarios sarcásticos que siempre las ha caracterizado.

Si hay algo que me gusta mucho de estas películas es la autoconciencia que tiene de ella misma. El que dentro del mundo de su mundo, exista "Stab" (una franquicia de películas que es básicamente Scream), me parece uno de los mejores recursos que tiene. En esta sexta entrega lo usan muy bien, haciendo un sinnúmero de comentarios sarcásticos e ingeniosos sobre los clichés propios de la saga, de los Slashers e incluso de otras franquicias cinematográficas como Avengers.

Quizás eso y la revelación del asesino son lo mejor de la película, ya que el resto está lleno de incoherencias demasiado exageradas, incluso para el género. Yo sé que las decisiones estúpidas reinan en los Slasher, pero ¿intentar escapar de Ghostface subiéndose al metro de NYC?, eso ya es otro nivel de estupidez. Sin contar el hecho de la policía toma como sospechosa a una de las hermanas Carpenter, cuando hay una tonelada de evidencia de que OBVIAMENTE ella no puede tener nada que ver con lo que está pasando, más allá de ser una víctima más.

Pero eso no es para mí lo peor de Scream VI, eso lo puedo tolerar porque como dije antes, así son los Slashers y eso es quizás parte de su encanto, la estupidez humana. Lo que de verdad me pareció algo imperdonable es el hecho de que el conteo final de muertos fuera tan bajo, tomando en cuenta que Ghostface estuvo bastante activo. Se supone que es una matanza, yo no quiero ver que todo el mundo sobreviva, yo quiero que se mueran prácticamente todos los secundarios y principales, no solo los extras. Hubo varios personajes que recibieron su buena dosis de cuchillazos, pero eventualmente se revela que milagrosamente se encuentran con vida.

Sobre los personajes centrales no hay mucho que decir, las actuaciones son en general bastante decentes. Me gustó ver a Courtney Cox retomando su papel de Gale, también me hubiera encantado que Neve Cambell regresara como Sidney, pero la producción se negó a aceptar sus condiciones de pago, algo muy lamentable y que me hizo extrañar el legendario "Hello, Sidney". Aunque quizás eso es solamente mi nostalgia hablando, ya que para ser sincera, tanto Jenna Ortega, como Melissa Barrera hacen un buen trabajo, aunque no puedo decir lo mismo de sus otros dos compañeros (los gemelos), demasiado genzies para mi gusto.

Debo aceptar que en líneas generales cumple con lo que debería ser, solo que a mí no me dejó encantada como pasó con otras, el asunto de las víctimas inmortales me caló bastante e hizo que mi opinión sobre la película decayera notablemente. A pesar de ello, no puedo dejar de recomendarla, no solo a aquellos que son aficionados a este tipo de películas, sino a los que quieran comenzar a serlo, ya que es entretenida y con suficientes elementos actuales para atraer a las nuevas generaciones.
