Una frase que resume para mí, uno de mis filmes favoritos. En boca de la madre del protagonista, solo unos minutos después de comenzada, escucharla, puso en mis ojos, humedad de sal.

Relata esta película la historia del doctor y neurocirujano Benjamin Carlson, quien atesora en su carrera varios hitos dentro de su especialidad. Manos milagrosas es basada en un libro de su autoría con el mismo título. Me gusta este filme por la trama médica, un poco, pero no es ni de cerca su principal objetivo.

Como es lógico, durante la película se hace mucho énfasis a los logros académicos que va obteniendo el protagonista, pero resalta una figura de la cual también emana inspiración en estado puro, y es precisamente, la madre del brillante médico, de quien verán como ella también logra sus propias victorias personales.

This film tells the story of the doctor and neurosurgeon Benjamin Carlson, who treasures in his career several milestones within his specialty. Gifted Hands is based on a book he wrote with the same title. I like this film for the medical plot, a little bit, but it's not nearly its main focus.

As is logical, during the film much emphasis is placed on the academic achievements of the protagonist, but it highlights a figure from which also emanates inspiration in its purest form, and it is precisely the mother of the brilliant doctor, from whom you will see how she also achieves her own personal victories.

Cuando me gradué de la carrera de medicina, comencé inmediatamente mi camino como Residente en la especialidad de Anestesiología. Aunque decidí que esta fuera mi especialidad, y que además lo hacía porque me gustaba, me encontraba a veces con momentos oscuros.

Momentos oscuros en los que por alguna razón u otra ya no quería seguir pasando malas noches, o estudiar determinado tema difícil, o simplemente, quería dedicarme a otra cosa que no fuese cerca de un hospital.

Era en esos momentos tan aterradores, en los que conectaba mi computadora, y con audífonos en mis oídos, comenzaba a proyectar Manos milagrosas. Casi siempre a la mitad de la película la energía en mi interior ya había cambiado, y para el final de la misma, mi batería motivacional ya estaba completa.

When I graduated from medical school, I immediately began my journey as a Resident in the specialty of Anesthesiology. Although I decided that this was my specialty, and that I was doing it because I liked it, I sometimes encountered dark moments.

Dark moments when for some reason or another I no longer wanted to spend bad nights, or study a certain difficult subject, or simply wanted to dedicate myself to something else that was not near a hospital.

It was in those terrifying moments that I would plug in my computer, and with headphones in my ears, I would start to play Gifted Hands. Almost always by the middle of the movie the energy inside me had already changed, and by the end of the movie, my motivational battery was full.

Creo que en medio de ciclo de posgrado, las vi unas cuatro o tal vez cinco veces. Casi cuando el camino estaba vencido, era cuando más necesité de ver esta obra. De verdad que no tenía ganas de seguir hasta la cima, sobre todo por la tesis, pues me habían dejado prácticamente solo en su confección.

Por suerte, allí estaba Cuba Gooding Jr. y el resto de los actores que interpretaron a Ben, en sus diferentes etapas al crecer. Ellos no hicieron la tesis junto a mí, pero me dieron inspiración suficiente para permanecer largas horas frente a una pantalla y lograr mis objetivos.

Ahora que ya soy especialista, y que por cierto, ya casi cumplo un año de mi titulación(para estas fechas estaba corriendo con la tesis y preparándome para los exámenes finales, y seguro que vi la película también), recomiendo siempre este filme a varios de los estudiantes, ya sea de pregrado o posgrado.

I think in the middle of my graduate school cycle, I saw them about four or maybe five times. It was almost when the road was over, when I needed to see this work the most. I really didn't feel like going all the way to the top, especially for the thesis, since I had been left practically alone in its making.

Luckily, there was Cuba Gooding Jr. and the rest of the actors who played Ben, in his different stages growing up. They didn't do the thesis with me, but they gave me enough inspiration to stay long hours in front of a screen and achieve my goals.

Now that I am a specialist, and by the way, I am almost a year into my degree (by this time I was running through my thesis and preparing for final exams, and I'm sure I saw the movie too), I always recommend this film to many of my students, whether undergraduate or graduate.

Incluso acostumbro dentro de las conferencias que me asignan para impartir, a dedicar alguna de las diapositivas, a resaltar este largometraje, como una pomada para aliviar los dolores de estudiar medicina, o cualquier otra carrera, y más cuando existen condiciones sociales, económicas, raciales de tu entorno personal, que atenten en tu contra.

Tengo otras pelis en mi corazón que me sirvieron y me siguen sirviendo como inspiración, pero supongo que será material para un próximo concurso. De momento invito a @samantha06 y a @restaurador, a ser parte del presente.

I even use to dedicate some of the slides in the conferences I am assigned to give, to highlight this feature film, as an ointment to alleviate the pain of studying medicine, or any other career, especially when there are social, economic, racial conditions in your personal environment that threaten against you.
