A Timeless Filipino Classic: Tanging Yaman (A Change of Heart) (2000)
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support of my last blog. It brings me immense joy to connect with all of you with the help of the Hive community. Today, I want to share a film that transcends mere entertainment: Tanging Yaman (2000).
Directed by Laurice Guillen, Tanging Yaman is a profoundly moving Filipino family drama that delves into love, forgiveness, and the significance of family. The narrative follows three siblings who have grown apart but are reunited when their mother, Loleng, falls ill. Portrayed by the incomparable Gloria Romero, Loleng’s deteriorating health compels her children to face their past conflicts, personal struggles, and the intricate matter of their inheritance. However, as the story progresses, they rediscover something far more precious than wealth, each other.
One of the most beautiful reasons to celebrate the film is to honor the late and great Gloria Romero, a true legend in Philippine cinema. Her portrayal of Loleng was nothing short of extraordinary. She captured the essence of a mother’s unconditional love, gentle yet strong, vulnerable yet resilient. Watching her performance feels like witnessing a piece of our own history, a reminder of the deep love and wisdom of the elders in our families. Her legacy endures in the hearts of all who have experienced her work.
The film left an indelible mark on my heart. It reflects the reality of many Filipino families, where distance, misunderstandings, and personal ambitions frequently create barriers. Yet it teaches us that no matter how far we drift, the love of family will always guide us back home. It reminds us that life is fleeting, and the time to express our love is now, not when it’s too late.
The transformation of the siblings throughout the film is what I found most captivating. Initially, they are engulfed by their own worries and tensions. However, as they care for their mother, they start to look beyond their own pain and acknowledge the love that has always existed. It’s a poignant and heartbreaking journey of healing and reconciliation.
The scene that still brings tears to my eyes is when Loleng, despite her memory loss, suddenly recognizes her children. In that fragile yet powerful moment, we see the purest form of love: a love that does not fade, no matter the struggles, no matter the years. That moment of clarity, is something that speaks to the soul. It’s a reminder that even when words fail, love remains.
Aside from Gloria Romero’s breathtaking performance, the entire cast was phenomenal. Johnny Delgado, Edu Manzano, Dina Bonnevie, and Hilda Koronel brought their characters to life with such depth and authenticity. Their arguments, their pain, their moments of tenderness felt so real, as if we were peeking into the lives of a family we knew.
It is not just a film, it is a love letter to Filipino families. It captures the struggles, the heartaches, and, most importantly, the love that binds us together. It reminds us to cherish our parents while they are still with us, to mend broken relationships before it’s too late, and to recognize that true wealth is not found in material things, but in the people we hold dear.
If you haven’t seen film yet, please take the time to watch it. You can watch the movie for free on Youtube. Let it touch your heart, let it remind you of home, and let it inspire you to hold your loved ones a little closer.
