12 Feet Deep (2016)

This American thriller starts with a very interesting idea, with tense moments that land well, but gets bogged down in a dramatic and melancholy aspect that feels forced; however, it is an engaging product without dazzling.

Director and co-writer Matt Eskandari starts off from an engaging lockup and gradually ratchets up the tension with some nice punchlines.

The question is what to add to the plot to achieve an 85-minute running time , and this is where the debate starts to get complicated.

An Olympic swimming pool, in which 2 sisters are trapped while diving at the same time that the mechanical cover of the pool closes, opts to dig into the family traumas of the past, but at times everything becomes very unstable in its dramatic facet, until a third one appears almost inexplicably in discord that then fulfills an interesting unhinged role.

Matt Eskandari's proposal has good intentions and good moments since its realization with a low budget, despite its short duration everything becomes a little long, forced and with stilted and weak dramatic transitions. Despite its plot problems, it manages to entertain and leaves that bitter taste of having given less than what was possible and expected.

The performances I think are correct and it manages to empathize with the suffering of the sisters as their characters are developed enough during the time they remain cloistered.
