The plot is set in Colombia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and follows the life of Florentino Ariza, played by Javier Bardem, a passionate young man who falls deeply in love with Fermina Daza, played by Giovanna Mezzogiorno...
However, Fermina ends up marrying another man, Dr. Juvenal Urbino, played by Benjamin Bratt....

Despite this, Florentino never stops loving Fermina and spends over fifty years waiting for his chance to be with her....
In the meantime Florentino engages in an endless series of adventures and romances, but his love for Fermina never fades...
Finally, after the death of her husband, Florentino has the chance to rekindle his love with Fermina....
A tale that shows that true love transcends everything and illuminates the whole of life. A jewel to remember that when love is sown with care and sincerity, it bears eternal fruit.

The film was screened for the first time at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival on 3 October 2007.
It did not have the expected success at the box office, although it was well received in Colombia.
The film received some attention at the Goya Awards, which recognise Spanish cinema, where it received nominations in categories such as Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, and the song "Despedida" performed by Shakira was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
