The remake of Mean Girls introduces us to Cady Heron, played by Angourie Rice, as the newcomer who enters the complex and sometimes cruel world of the high school social hierarchy.

The Plastics, led by the wily Regina George (Reneé Rapp), take centre stage as high school queens.

The direction, by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr, stays true to the essence of the source material. While it offers no notable innovations, it manages to capture the essence of teenage interactions and presents a modern depiction of the challenges of adolescence.

The performances are solid, though perhaps lacking the distinctive sparkle of the original version. Angourie Rice confidently carries the role of Cady, while Reneé Rapp delivers a convincing Regina George.

The cast overall performs well, though inevitably compares to the iconic performances of the original film.

As the film progresses, it becomes clear that this remake takes a slightly different tone in its approach to the story. The script, while following the broad outlines of the original, softens some of the darker and crueler aspects of the plot, leaning more towards humour and comedy.

This choice may appeal to a new audience and offers a refreshing perspective for those familiar with the previous version.

On the technical side, the film follows a basic but effective formula. The cinematography and soundtrack contribute to setting the mood, although they do not particularly stand out. The visual and aural essence remains true to the spirit of the story.

Apart from the 12 songs, there are a few modern-day additions such as social media that give it more freshness; however, the essence of the story is the same, laughing a little at the looks and the poshness that reigns in many girls' way of life.

It is a remake that captures the essence of the original film while giving it a fresh, modern twist. While it may lack the bite of the classic, it offers a fresh and modern twist.
