A few years ago, I saw "The Killing of the Sacred Deer", a film that I found incredible in all its aspects, so I wanted to know who its director was: Yorgos Lanthimos. A Greek director who, in my opinion, is one of the best directors of recent times. With less than 6 films under his belt, when I heard, he was going to release a film loosely based on Frankenstein starring Emma Stone, Poor things became the film I was most looking forward to in 2023.
Now in 2024 it took a while to hit theaters, but it finally arrived and I couldn't have felt better about the experience I had watching it in a movie theater. "Poor things" is a film that is about, at its most basic, a woman who by a quirk of fate has the brain of a baby, so for two hours and twenty minutes we see the journey of self-knowledge and learning of our absolute protagonist Bella Baxter, played in lavish detail by an Emma Stone who if she doesn't take the Oscar honestly, it would be a steal
Although, I have a fear and it's because of the number of sexual scenes the movie has. For me, all the sex in the movie is shown to perfection by its director, but it is SO MUCH and sometimes it is so grotesque that I understand that some people take it as vulgar or cancel it because of how explicit it gets to be. However, this cannot come out any other way, as Bella's journey is created based on her sexuality and because of this one must connect with her pleasure and, sometimes, with the disgust that this can cause.
At first, I thought Poor things was an allegory to women, to the bad time they have in general when trying to lead a life biased by a sexist society, and, beyond the theme of society, all that women suffer in general, but thinking about it, the "poor creatures" can be us, who force ourselves to live repressed, under ideas and ideologies that if you think about it are wrong and even go against our morals and ethics.
My advice will always be to see the films, and while I know this is a difficult recommendation, I can't help but think that in form, it is one of the best films not only of the year, but of history. A film that will be used by teachers to teach, that will be seen by artists as inspiration, by film lovers as a vision of what a film can become when it strips away prejudice and seeks to show regardless of whether it is well received by everyone. And well, although it has been clear, I have to say again that I loved Poor things, as a lover cannot stop declaring, because every time I think of the movie, I get goosebumps and I sincerely hope that many, because I know not everyone, it happens the same as me and love it just as much.

Hace unos años vi “el asesinato del ciervo sagrado”, una película que me pareció increíble en todos sus aspectos, así que quise conocer bien quien era su director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Un director greco que, a mi parecer, es uno de los mejores directores de la los últimos tiempos. Con menos de 6 películas, cuando me enteré que iba a sacar una película ligeramente basada en Frankenstein protagonizada por Emma Stone, Poor things se convirtió en la película que más esperé el 2023.
Ahora en 2024 tardó en llegar a los cines, pero por fin llegó y no pude haberme sentido mejor con la experiencia que tuve al verla en una sala de cine. Poor things es una película que va de, en lo más básico, de una mujer que por azares del destino tiene el cerebro de un bebé, así que durante dos horas y veinte minutos vemos el viaje de auto conocimiento y aprendizaje de nuestra absoluta protagonista Bella Baxter, interpretada con lujo de detalle por una Emma Stone que, si no se lleva el Oscar sinceramente, sería un robo.
Aunque bien, tengo un miedo y es por la cantidad de escenas sexuales que tiene la película. Para mí, todo el sexo de la película está mostrado a la perfección por su director, pero es TANTO y a veces es tan grotesco que comprendo que algunas personas la tomen de vulgar o la cancelen por lo explicita que llega a ser. Sin embargo, esto no puede salir de otra forma, pues el viaje de Bella está creado a base de su sexualidad y debido a esto se debe conectar con su placer y, a veces, con el disgusto que este puede causar.
Al principio pensé que Poor things hacía alegoría a las mujeres, a lo mal que la pasan en general al tratar de llevar una vida sesgada por una sociedad machista, y, más allá del tema de la sociedad, todo lo que sufren las mujeres en general, pero pensándolo bien, las “pobres criaturas” podemos ser notros, quienes nos obligamos a vivir reprimidos, bajo ideas e ideologías que si se piensan bien están mal planteadas e incluso van en contra de nuestra moral y nuestra ética.
Siempre mi consejo será ver las películas, y aunque sé que esta es una difícil recomendación, no puedo dejar de pensar que en forma, es una de las mejores películas no solo del año, sino de la historia. Una película que será usada por maestros para enseñar, que será vista por artistas como inspiración, por amantes del cine como una visión de lo que puede llegar a ser una película cuando se despoja de los prejuicios y busca mostrar sin importar si es bien recibida por todo el mundo. Y bueno, aunque ha quedado claro, tengo que volver a decir que me encantó Poor things, como un enamorado no puede parar de declararse, ya que cada vez que pienso en la película la piel se me pone de gallina y sinceramente espero que, a muchos, porque sé que no a todos, les pase lo mismo que a mí y les encante de igual manera.
