A few days ago I was invited to watch a Danish movie called Druk. A film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen about a group of teachers who start drinking moderately in order to enjoy their day to day life more and give a fresh air to their lives. I had already seen it and had things to do, so sadly I couldn't accept the invitation to see such an incredible film, which won best foreign film at the Oscars the year it was released, and is really as interesting a film as its director, Thomas Vitenberg, who in the mid-nineties, along with another well-known Danish director, started one of the most extravagant (and short) movements that cinema has given us: Dogme 95

Dogme 95 was basically a movement where it was forbidden to use any form of "technology" to create a film. Among its VERY strict rules were that you couldn't shoot on a set, it had to be a real location, it had to have only natural light, you couldn't edit the sound of what was recorded or add sound in post production, you couldn't use props (therefore you couldn't commit crimes) and, obviously, you couldn't accept special effects.

Taking this into account, it is obvious that the idea is silly, because it is, but in spite of that, some directors joined the idea making some interesting films. Among them is one of my favorite directors, Harmony Korine, who made the first Dogme 95 film outside Europe, the great Julien Donkey Boy. Besides this one, there is also another great Dogme 95 film, which was even the one that started this movement: Festen, a black comedy directed by Vitenberg himself about a family reunion that ends up going wrong.

Over the years, directors realized that more than an innovative idea, Dogme 95 was just a whim. With enough maturity, filmmakers like Lars Von Tiers left this thought and created films using all kinds of ideas, technology and props, like for example "Antichrist" where fake blood is used or the incredible "Dogville" where everything is a film set.

And well, Vitenberg continued to make films, as real as they are raw and interesting, but leaving aside all those rules he had thought of more than twenty years ago. Among them, I can recommend "The Hunt", a film about a school teacher in a small town who is accused of harassing a girl and everyone begins to doubt him. Or, going to a completely opposite extreme to what the Danish director usually does, "Far from the Madding Crowd" is a period romance film starring my favorite actress of the moment: Carey Mulligan. So, as quickly as it appeared, Dogme 95 disappeared, but not before leaving several cult films and a few directors with some good films in their filmography.

Hace unos días me invitaron a ver una película danesa llamada Druk. Película dirigida por Thomas Vinterberg y protagonizada por Mads Mikkelsen sobre un grupo de profesores que empieza a beber moderadamente para así disfrutar más su día a día y darle un aire fresco a su vida. Ya la había visto y tenía cosas que hacer, así que tristemente no pude aceptar la invitación a ver tan increíble película, que ganó mejor película extranjera en los Oscars el año que se estrenó, y es realmente una película tan interesante cómo su director, Thomas Vitenberg, que a mediados de los años noventa, junto a otro director danés muy reconocido, comenzó uno de los movimientos más extravagantes (y cortos) que nos ha dado el cine: el Dogma 95.

El Dogma 95 era, básicamente, un movimiento dónde se prohibía utilizar de alguna forma “tecnología” para crear una película. Entre sus MUY estrictas reglas, estaba que no se podía grabar en algún set sino que tiene que ser una locación real, tiene que tener solo luz natural, no se puede editar el sonido de lo grabado ni agregar sonido en post producción, no se puede utilizar utilería (por ende no se pueden cometer crímenes) y, obviamente, no se aceptan efectos especiales.

Teniendo esto en cuenta es algo obvio que la idea es una tontería, porque la verdad, si lo es, pero a pesar de eso, algunos directores se sumaron a la idea haciendo una que otra película cuanto menos interesante. Entre ellos, está uno de mis directores favoritos, Harmony Korine, quien hizo la primera película del Dogma 95 fuera de Europa, la grandísima Julien Donkey Boy. Además de esta, también hay otra gran película del Dogma 95, que, incluso, fue la que inicio esta movida: Festen, una comedia negra dirigida por el propio Vitenberg acerca de una reunión familiar que termina saliendo mal.

Con los años, los directores se dieron cuenta que más que una idea innovadora, el Dogma 95 era solo un capricho. Con la madurez suficiente, cineastas como Lars Von Tiers dejaron este pensamiento y crearon películas utilizando todo tipo de ideas, tecnología y utilería, como por ejemplo “Anticristo” dónde se utiliza sangre falsa o la increíble “Dogville” dónde todo es un set de filmación.

Y bueno, Vitenberg siguió haciendo cine, tan real como crudo e interesante, pero dejando de lado todas esas reglas que había pensado hace ya más de veinte años. Entre ellas, puedo recomendar “The Hunt”, película sobre un profesor de escuela de un pueblo pequeño que es acusado de acosar una niña y todos empiezan a dudar de él. O, yéndose a un extremo completamente opuesto a lo que el realizador danés suele hacer, “Far from the Madding Crowd” es una película de romance de época dónde actúa mi actriz del momento favorita: Carey Mulligan. Así, tan rápido como apareció, el Dogma 95 desapareció, pero no sin antes dejar varias películas de culto y unos cuantos directores con unas buenas películas dentro de su filmografía.
