333 Million Dollars: one of the largest damage awards in U.S. history | Review of Erin Brockovich

Hello my dear hivers, on this occasion I come to share a post in the great Movies & TV Shows community that at least to me, left me speechless. An inspiring movie that had been hanging around my Netflix to-watch list for some time, but for one reason or another, I kept putting it off, it's Erin Brockovich.

It is the true story of a woman who, as mentioned in the page elmundo.es, investigated so much but so much, until she found concrete evidence of damage to the health of a community, that she managed to compensate this group of people with 333 million dollars. Scam? On the contrary, justice.

This film takes on too many points that fascinate me: women's strength, personal development, justice, determination, law and environmental health.

Hola mi queridos hivers, en esta ocasión vengo a compartir un post en la genial comunidad de Movies & TV Shows que al menos a mí, me dejó sin palabras. Una película inspiradora que hacía tiempo venía rondando mi lista de pendientes en Netflix, pero que por uno u otro motivo, postergaba, se trata de Erin Brockovich.

Es la historia real de una mujer que tal como lo menciona la pagína elmundo.es, investigó tanto pero tanto, hasta encontrar pruebas concretas de un daño a la salud de una comunidad, que logró que se indemnizara a este grupo de personas con 333 millones de dólares. ¿Estafa? Por el contrario, justicia.

Esta película toma demasiados puntos que me fascinan: la fuerza de la mujer, el desarrollo personal, la justicia, la determinación, el derecho y la salud ambiental.

Antes de empezar con ellos, a lo largo de los cuales iré comentándoles tal trama de esta película, sí quisiera informar que este caso real ocurrió a fines del siglo XX y la película se estrenó en 2000. Su director es Steven Soderbergh click aquí para más info.

Women's empowerment and personal development

In this production, which as you know is based on a real life case, you can clearly see Erin as a woman aware of her own value. Although life was playing a trick on her, she was divorced for the second time and with three children, unemployed, after a slight automobile accident she gets a position in a law office where she very slowly begins to grow.

It is observed that her way of dressing and being has nothing to do with the other workers of the place, but Erin does not care, she is authentic, and hungry for challenges, she surpasses tremendously the tasks assigned to her in the small office and goes a little further, expanding the horizons on a strange case of intoxication and pathologies in a community (I will talk about this later).

Erin wants to be a responsible mother and indeed she is, but she knows she has a mission and is willing to achieve it. It just so happens that she discovers her mission along the way.

La fuerza de la mujer y el desarrollo personal

En esta producción, que como saben está basada en un caso de la vida real, puede verse claramente a Erin como una mujer consciente de su propio valor. Aunque la vida le venía jugando una mala pasada, ella estaba divorciada por segunda vez y con tres hijos, desempleada, tras un leve accidente automóvilístico logra un puesto en una oficina de abogados en donde muy lentamente empieza a crecer.

Se observa que su manera de vestirse y de ser no tiene nada que ver con las otras trabajadoras del lugar, pero a Erin no le importa, ella es auténtica, y hambrienta de desafíos, supera tremendamente las tareas que le asignan en la pequeña oficina y va un poco más allá, expandiendo los horizontes sobre un caso extraño de intoxicación y patologías en una comunidad (hablaré de este tema más adelante).

Erin desea ser una madre responsable y de hecho lo es, pero sabe que tiene una misión y está dispuesta a alcanzarla. Lo que pasa es que descubre su misión en el camino.

This woman begins to empathize with the victims of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company plant, which had suffered a chromium seepage into the water, which was having fatal repercussions for the people of Hinkley.

La película pertenece a una época donde la mujer ya tenía más posición social y laboral, pero continuaba existiendo cierta distancia ante algunas figuras como la mamá soltera, la mujer divorciada y demás. Hoy en día esto se ha relajado bastante, pero en los años 90 esto todavía tenía cierta delicadeza. Más allá de esto, Erin va a por todo, y sus objetivos exceden sus metas personales de crecimiento, que claro que las tenía. Esta mujer empieza a empatizar con las víctimas de la planta Pacific Gas and Electric Company, que había sufrido una infiltración de cromo en el agua, lo que estaba teniendo repercusiones fatales para los habitantes de Hinkley.

Justice and determination

As I mentioned previously, Erin begins to look for social justice over economic gain. I also believe that this is a great example of a well-balanced balance of service and cost, as she had no objection to making her work count. She knew very well what she was sacrificing, but she had her motives, which exceeded her personal interests, that is why she made claims about her salary or her benefits as an employee, because she had no doubt that her contribution was adding value to the original project, in this case a small law firm.

In addition, both personally and in the office, Erin struggled. And by struggle, I don't mean that she seemed like a "victim", but rather that she went forward, as we say in Argentina. There could be personal or work hurricanes, but Erin was determined to achieve what she had set out to do, which was that those families whose health had been affected would be able to cope with the illness that a company had generated.

La justicia y la determinación

Como mencionaba previamente, Erin empieza a buscar por sobre el rédito económico, la justicia social. Igualmente creo que es un gran ejemplo de una balanza bien equilibrada en cuanto al servicio y el costo que eso implica, pues ella no tenía inconveniente en hacer valer su trabajo. Ella sabía muy bien lo que estaba sacrificando, pero tenía sus motivos, que excedían a sus intereses personale, por eso hacía reclamos sobre su salario o sus beneficios como empleada, porque no tenía duda alguna de que su aporte estaba agregando valor al proyecto original, en este caso una pequeña firma de un abogado.

Además, tanto en lo personal como en la oficina, Erin luchaba. Y con lucha no quiero que ella parezca una “víctima”, sino que le daba para adelante, como decimos en Argentina. Podían haber huracanes personales o laborales, pero Erin estaba decidida a lograr lo que se había propuesto, que era que esas familias cuya salud se había visto afectada, pudieran hacer frente a la enfermedad que una empresa había generado.

Law and environmental health

This topic has been studied by me at some point in my career as a Geographer and then in the Specialization in Public Health, and although today I am somewhat distant from the subject in question, it has always touched me a lot, especially because in my province, in Mendoza, in recent years there has been an arduous debate on whether or not to legally authorize open-pit mining, a polluting activity that leaves the soil completely destroyed for centuries (literally). This movie topic reminded me of the situation in Mendoza.

It is a wonderful theme to approach in parallel to a woman who fights for her ligar and shows her resolute abilities, but it is even more beautiful to know that this story is real.

Anyway, as I have been mentioning, the chromium that had infiltrated the water was causing respiratory and gastrointestinal pathologies and even cancer in different parts of the body of the people who lived in Hinkley. This could only be proven thanks to Erin's exhaustive research work where she searched for public documentation certifying the contamination, and collecting testimonies from different inhabitants.

Derecho y salud ambiental

Este tema ha sido bastante estudiado por mí en algún momento en mi carrera de Geógrafa y luego en la Especialización en Salud Pública, y aunque hoy esté algo alejada de la temática en cuestión, siempre me ha tocado bastante, en especial porque en mi provincia, en Mendoza, en los últimos años ha tenido lugar un arduo debate sobre si autorizar legalmente o no, la minería a cielo abierto, actividad contaminante que deja al suelo completamente destruido por siglos (literal). Este tópico de la película me recordó la situación en Mendoza.

Es una temática maravillosa para abordar en paralelo a una mujer que pelea por su ligar y que hace ver sus capacidades resolutivas, pero más bonito aún es saber que esta historia es real.

En fin, como vengo mencionando, el cromo que se había infiltrado en el agua estaba causando patologías respiratorias, gastrointestinales e incluso cáncer en diferentes partes del cuerpo de las personas que habitaban Hinkley. Esto solo pudo comprobarse gracias al exhaustivo trabajo de investigación de Erin en donde buscaba documentación pública que certifica la contaminación, y recaudando testimonios de diferentes habitantes.

Opinion

Excellent, without words, a movie that keeps you on your toes if you like the subject matter and that also gives a message of transformation, growth and empowerment without equal.

The fact that it is based on a true story, gives it even more value, because we know that this woman, Erin Brockovich, exists, we know that what she did appealed for the good of a whole community full of families, and sought to repair a tremendous damage caused by a large company to these inhabitants.

It has its years, but if you haven't seen it yet, I encourage you to do so, as it is an impressive source of inspiration, wherever you are at this moment in your life.

Excelente, sin palabras, una película que te mantiene alerta si te gusta la temática y que qdemás da un mensaje de transformación, crecimiento y empoderamiento sin igual.

El hecho de que esté basada en una historia real, le brinda todavía más valor, porque sabemos que esta mujer, Erin Brockovich, existe, sabemos que lo que hizo apeló por el bien de toda una comunidad repleta de familias, y buscó resarcir un daño tremendo ocasionado por una gran empresa a estos habitantes.

Tiene sus años, pero si todavía no la has visto, te aliento a hacerlo, pues es una fuente de inspiración impresionante, en donde sea que te encuentres en este momento en tu vida.
