Nowhere, review (no spoiler) (ENG/SPA)
Hello, people of Internet, this time I bring you a post about a Netflix movie that I started watching with low expectations and it blew me away. On a cinematographic level (cinematography, staging, etc) it is not too surprising, however, its story, performances and dynamism were quite amazing.
Hola, gente de Internet, en esta ocasión les traigo un post sobre una película de Netflix que empecé a ver con pocas expectativas y me dejó sorprendida. A nivel cinematográfico (fotografía, puesta en escena, etc) no es demasiado sorprendente, sin embargo, su historia, actuaciones y dinamismo fueron bastante asombrosos.
This film reminds me of productions like South Korea's "All We Are Dead" and "Closet Land" starring Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe. In what way? Well, in that both productions have one or very few sets and yet they are entertaining because they play very well with the situations, the dialogue and the actors do a great job.
De entrada, esta película me recuerda producciones como Estamos Muertos de Corea del Sur y Tierra de Armarios protagonizada por Alan Rickman y Madeleine Stowe ¿en que? pues en que ambas producciones tienen uno o muy pocos platós, y aun así son entretenidas ya que juegan muy bien con las situaciones, los dialogos y los actores hacen un trabajo estupendo.
Nowhere is about a dystopian society in Spain, its dictatorial government decides to do what the Nazis did with their "Final Solution", massacring everything that represents a waste of resources (which there are very few) i.e. old people, children and pregnant women, forcing people to rely on human traffickers in order to leave the country and start a normal life in another one. Our protagonist and her husband decide to take this option and that is where our story begins.
Nowhere trata sobre una sociedad distópica en España, su gobierno dictatorial decide hacer lo mismo que los Nazi con su "Solución Final" masacrar a todo lo que represente un gasto de recursos (que hay muy poco) es decir, ancianos, niños y mujeres embarazadas, eso obliga a las personas a confiar en los traficantes de personas para poder salir del país e iniciar una vida normal en otro. Nuestra protagonista y su marido deciden tomar esta opción y es ahí donde comienza nuestra historia.
I have a problem with this massacres of children and pregnant women thing, I mean, from a pragmatic point of view and leaving morality aside, getting rid of the elderly would make sense since they cannot work and consume resources but doing it with children.... they could give them simple tasks that are still necessary and after all they will grow up and can be even more useful, the only ones that could be considered a burden would be babies and very young children (as pregnant women could work too) and yet those children will grow up and be useful, if you do away with pregnancies and children, there will be no future... What do they intend? to become extinct as the years go by? It's a nonsense that only moves the story forward for convenience as the main character is pregnant, so the argument why the girl is inside a container in the middle of the ocean is pretty weak.
Tengo un problema con esto de las masacres de niños y embarazadas, digo yo, desde el punto de vista pragmático y dejando de lado la moralidad, deshacerse de los ancianos tendría sentido ya que no pueden trabajar y consumen recursos, pero hacerlo con niños... podrían darles tareas sencillas que igual son necesarias y después de todo van a crecer y pueden ser aun más útiles, los únicos que podrían considerarse carga serían los bebés y niños muy pequeños (ya que las embarazadas podrían trabajar también) y sin embargo, esos niños crecerán y serán útiles, si acabas con los embarazos y los niños, no habrá futuro ¿Qué pretenden? ¿extinguirse con el paso de los años? Es un sin sentido que solo hace avanzar la historia por conveniencia, ya que la protagonista está embarazada, así que el argumento por el cual la muchacha va a parar a a un contenedor en el medio del océano es bastante flojo.
Continuing with what I didn't like about the film, I feel that the characters were not given much screen time to have depth and development, it is clear that they could not give much dialogue to the protagonist as she is alone in the middle of nowhere and normally people don't go around talking to imaginary friends,in the style of Cast Away, unless you have months alone, that's why I think we should have spent at least more than a quarter of the film watching the the evils of government before the trip in the container, even the loss of the couple's daughter, is something they should have shown to help with this aspect, but you can tell they rushed to write the most interesting part, the one about the container. It almost reminds me of fanfic stories where everything happens too fast and pointlessly, just because the author wants to get to a particular part.
Siguiendo con lo que no me gustó de la película, siento que a los personajes no se les dio demasiado tiempo en pantalla para que tuvieran profundidad y desarrollo, esta claro que no podían darle muchos dialogos a la protagonista ya que se encuentra sola en mitad de la nada y normalmente la gente no va hablando con amigos imaginaros al estilo El naufrago, a menos que tengas meses solo, es por eso que considero que debíamos pasar al menos más de un cuarto de la película viendo los desmanes del gobierno antes del viaje en el contenedor, incluso la pérdida de la hija del matrimonio, es algo que deberían haber mostrado para ayudar con este aspecto, pero se nota que se apresuraron a escribir la parte más interesante, lo del conteiner. Casi me recuerda a las historias de fanfic donde todo sucede demasiado rápido y sin sentido, solo porque la autora quiere llegar a una parte en concreto.
Now, apart from the flatness of the main character and the lazy convenience for which she is in the container, I must say that both the performance of the actress and the dynamism and structure of the film at this point, is quite good. I said it in my review of All Of Us Are Death, it is tremendously difficult to entertain having only one place as a set as you must find a way for the character to interact with everything around her to create situations that are entertaining to watch. Her constant struggle for survival and how she used the resources around her to keep herself alive for the sake of her baby was impressive. It has a lot of wit and is curious to say the least, as we are constantly wondering what she will do next.
Ahora bien, quitando lo plano que es el personaje principal y la conveniencia perezosa por la cual se encuentra en el contenedor, debo decir que tanto la actuación de la actriz como el dinamismo y estructura de la película en este punto es bastante buena. Lo dije en mi review de Estamos Muertos, es tremendamente difícil entretener teniendo un único lugar como plató ya que debes buscar la manera en la que el personaje interactúe con todo lo que está a su alrededor para crear situaciones que sean divertidas de ver. Su lucha constante por la supervivencia y el como utilizaba los recursos a su alrededor para mantenerse con vida por el bien de su bebé, eran impresionantes. Tiene mucho ingenio y es cuando menos curioso, ya que nos estamos preguntando constantemente que hará.
I think they exaggerated a bit with the number of times the container was hit, I feel that so many jolts to a container with holes in it was a sure way to sink, so I think a moderate storm would have been enough to make us worry. I liked the ending although I thought it was very convenient that they ended up where they wanted to go from the start and didn't divert course. It's clear that the freighter they were on had already plotted the course to a certain place, but the currents could easily have changed the course, so it seemed unrealistic to me, but apart from that, I liked the ending.
Creo que exageraron un poco con las veces que el conteiner fue golpeado, siento que tantas sacudidas a un conteiner con agujeros era un hundimiento seguro, así que creo que con una tormenta moderada hubiese bastando para generarnos preocupación. El final me gustó aunque me pareció muy de conveniencia que terminaran en el lugar al que quisieron ir desde un inicio y no desviaran el curso. Esta claro que el carguero en el que iban ya había trazado el curso hasta determinado lugar, pero las corrientes fácilmente podrían haber cambiado el curso, así que me pareció poco realista, sin embargo y quitando esto, el final me gustó.

Concuerdo contigo en que exageraron las partes de los golpes del container, para la cantidad de agujeros que tenía era prácticamente imposible durar tantos días

Hola 👋, dos meses después de publicado tu post sobre esta película, hoy finalmente la ví. Me pareció muy buena, independientemente de algunos sin sentidos de la historia, hay que reconocer que la película descansó en la actualización de Anna Castillo, impresionante, no paré de llorar y eso que no tengo hijos. Está fuerte su historia y está bastante triste. No voy a hablar del final, para que los que no la han visto sientan la curiosidad de hacerlo, pero está muy bien el final. A mí me gustó mucho la película, gracias a tí le puse un poco más de atención porque ya tenía un referente. Un abrazo grande desde Cuba.
