Review film The Invitation. [ENG-ESP]
Estamos en los últimos días de octubre y aunque en mi país culturalmente no celebramos Halloween 🎃, me gustaría dedicar esta publicación al género de terror, que si bien no es “El Exorcista” que por cierto es una de las mejores películas de terror de todos los tiempos, es una película que tiene como tema principal a uno de los personajes más emblemáticos en cuanto a terror se refiere, y que ha sido utilizado en innumerables películas en diferentes historias y esta es la última que vi de este tipo.
We are in the last days of October and although in my country culturally we do not celebrate Halloween 🎃, I would like to dedicate this publication to the horror genre, that although it is not “The Exorcist” which by the way is one of the best horror movies of all time, it is a film that has as its main theme one of the most emblematic characters when it comes to terror, and that has been used in countless films in different stories and this is the last one I saw of this type.
Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), acaba de perder a su madre y se ha quedado sin familia en el mundo. Sintiéndose sola, sin familia, sin novio y con una sola amiga, entra en una página web que utiliza el ADN para buscar parientes. Allí conoce a un primo de nacionalidad inglesa que se alegra mucho de su parentesco y decide viajar a Estados Unidos exclusivamente para conocerla.
Oliver (Hugh Skinner), el nuevo primo de Evie, es un inglés joven, blanco (sí, tengo que mencionar su color de piel), educado y muy al estilo del Darcy de “El diario de Bridget Jones”. El primo afirma que es la única mujer de la familia Alexander y que al resto de los hombres de la familia (que también son blancos) les encantaría conocerla.
También le cuenta que sus antepasados son producto de un desliz de su bisabuela Emmaline Alexander con el criado de la casa (que era negro), una relación no aceptada porque ella estaba prometida y que antes de suicidarse entregó a su hijo al criado, para que escapara a otras tierras y salvara la vida de ambos. Pero como eso fue hace muchos años, el racismo ya no existe en su familia y ahora todos los hombres Alexander la adoran.
Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel), has just lost her mother and is left without a family in the world. Feeling lonely, with no family, no boyfriend and only one friend, she enters a website that uses DNA to search for relatives. There she meets a cousin of English nationality who is very happy about her kinship and decides to travel to the United States exclusively to meet her.
Oliver (Hugh Skinner), Evie’s new cousin, is a young, white (yes, I have to mention his skin color), educated and very Darcy-esque Englishman from “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” The cousin claims that she is the only woman in the Alexander family and that the rest of the men in the family (who are also white) would love to meet her.
He also tells her that her ancestors are the product of a slip of her great-grandmother Emmaline Alexander with the house servant (who was black), a relationship not accepted because she was engaged and that before committing suicide she gave her son to the servant, so that he could escape to other lands and save both their lives. But since that was many years ago, racism no longer exists in her family and now all the Alexander men adore her.
Para preparar el encuentro con el resto de la familia, la invita a una boda familiar en Inglaterra con todos los gastos pagados. ¿Qué puede salir mal, si son su familia y Oliver es tan simpático?
La fiesta es en una preciosa mansión, al llegar conoce al apuesto y encantador dueño de la propiedad, Walter DeVille (Thomas Doherty). La chispa se enciende entre ellos desde el primer momento. Cuando Evie conoce al resto de la familia, todos están felices de tenerla (más felices que de costumbre), ella es la invitada de honor en todos los eventos de esta boda y disfruta de las atenciones de todos.
Los eventos son de noche y es en esas horas que Evie conoce a Walter, comparten y él la hace sentir valiosa hasta que se enamora de él y supuestamente Walter también se enamora de ella.
Por las noches Evie también tiene sueños donde ve a su bisabuela Emmaline Alexander momentos antes de su suicidio. Pero esto no es lo único que ocurre en la mansión, también se producen desapariciones de las criadas ante una escalofriante presencia, que no se nos muestra hasta casi el final.
To prepare to meet the rest of the family, he invites her to an all-expenses-paid family wedding in England. What can go wrong, if they are her family and Oliver is so nice?
The party is at a beautiful mansion, upon arrival she meets the handsome and charming owner of the property, Walter DeVille (Thomas Doherty). The spark ignites between them from the very first moment. When Evie meets the rest of the family, everyone is happy to have her (happier than usual), she is the guest of honor at all the events of this wedding and enjoys everyone’s attentions.
The events are at night and it is in those hours that Evie meets Walter, they share and he makes her feel valuable until she falls in love with him and supposedly Walter also falls in love with her.
At night Evie also has dreams where she sees her great-grandmother Emmaline Alexander moments before her suicide. But this is not the only thing that happens in the mansion, there are also disappearances of the maids before a creepy presence, which we are not shown until almost the end.
Entre los invitados están Viktoria y Lucy que pertenecen a las otras dos familias invitadas a la boda, ellas intentan hacerse amigas de Evie e involucrarla en los acontecimientos de la boda. Viktoria es sarcástica y da la impresión de que algo le molesta, en cambio Lucy es dulce, como una niña pequeña feliz por su nueva amiga.
Cuando Evie finalmente cae rendida a los pies del apuesto millonario Walter DeVille y acepta casarse con él, (en un fin de semana) es cuando se descubre quienes son los novios y comienza la pesadilla para Evie, ya que descubre los secretos de su nueva familia y por qué estaban tan contentos de haberla encontrado.
Among the guests are Viktoria and Lucy who belong to the other two families invited to the wedding, they try to befriend Evie and involve her in the events of the wedding. Viktoria is sarcastic and gives the impression that something is bothering her, on the other hand Lucy is sweet, like a little girl happy for her new friend.
When Evie finally falls at the feet of handsome millionaire Walter DeVille and agrees to marry him, (on a weekend) it is when it is discovered who the bride and groom are and the nightmare begins for Evie, as she discovers the secrets of her new family and why they were so happy to have found her.
Nathalie Emmanuel, es una actriz relativamente nueva a la que no he visto en muchas películas, pero la recordamos por su participación en la serie Juegos de Tronos donde fue amiga de Daenerys y también parte de la familia de Dominic Toretto en la saga Fast and Furious. En esta película su actuación es sobresaliente y creíble, quedando muy bien para futuras producciones. En el caso de Thomas Doherty, me pareció encantador en todo el sentido de la Palabra, su actuación fue seductora en todo momento, así que cómo no caer rendida a sus pies.
La escenografía e iluminación elegida fue acorde con el tema, en las escenas nocturnas o en total oscuridad se podían apreciar las acciones de los personajes, La banda sonora aportaba suspense y no era un sonido agobiante, todos estos detalles me gustaron mucho.
Nathalie Emmanuel, is a relatively new actress that I have not seen in many films, but we remember her for her participation in the series Games of Thrones where she was a friend of Daenerys and also part of the family of Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious saga. In this film her performance is outstanding and credible, looking great for future productions. In the case of Thomas Doherty, I found him charming in every sense of the word, his performance was seductive at all times, so how not to fall at his feet.
The scenery and lighting chosen was in keeping with the theme, in the night scenes or in total darkness you could appreciate the actions of the characters, The soundtrack provided suspense and was not a stifling sound, all these details I liked very much.
No es una mala película aunque tampoco es de las mejores, tiene algunas contradicciones como que ella se encuentra con Walter a mitad del día pero luego cuando lo busca le dicen que estará en los eventos de la noche.
Suele ser esa historia en la que la pobre chica se enamora del príncipe rico y guapo que la conquista en dos días, eso es muy cliché. Cómo puede estar tan deslumbrada que acepta casarse con él, claro, también pienso que aunque hubiera dicho que no, no creo que hubiera cambiado nada, su destino ya estaba escrito.
La historia de las familias, me gustó, esta parte me pareció bien desarrollada desde el principio y te da un mejor contexto de todo lo que estaba pasando. En cuanto al final, fue como pasar de Cenicienta a Buffy Cazavampiros. No sé si es tan creíble, pero funcionó para conseguir un final feliz para Evie.
It’s not a bad movie although it’s not one of the best either, it has some contradictions like she meets Walter in the middle of the day but then when she looks for him she is told he will be at the evening events.
It’s usually that story where the poor girl falls in love with the rich and handsome prince who conquers her in two days, that’s very cliché. How can she be so dazzled that she agrees to marry him, of course, I also think that even if she had said no, I don’t think it would have changed anything, her destiny was already written.
The story of the families, I liked it, this part I thought was well developed from the beginning and gives you a better context of everything that was going on. As for the ending, it was like going from Cinderella to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don’t know if it’s that believable, but it worked in order to get a happy ending for Evie.

Hola, las películas de terror tampoco son mis favoritas, pero está película en realidad tiene más suspenso y misterio que terror. En ningún momento sentí miedo.

Parece que te la conté completa, pero no fue así, porque no te dije porque estaban tan emocionados por tenerla a ella. Al menos que ya tengas tus sospechas.

Coincido en que la actuación de la protagonista es muy buena, a pesar de todo lo demás. La trama tiene contradicciones y tiene esa mezcla que mencionas y que la hace pasar de romance juvenil a película (mala) de vampiros.
