Serie Review Shōgun. [ENG-ESP]

In my previous post I commented that I was watching Shōgun and I want to tell you that I loved this series, nowadays we get a lot of series to entertain the public, but this one not only does that, but it comes loaded with a beauty of landscapes, cultural differences and samurai honor. It is a master class in world history or at least that part of the world. Although this story is based on a book that I have not read, I did not know that the book was based on the sailor William Adams who was the first Englishman to reach Japan and also in the 80’s there was a TV series with the same theme, all that I learned after watching the series and search for information on the internet, so I only started watching it because of the good recommendations I read in the community.

En mi post anterior comenté que estaba viendo Shōgun y quiero decirles que me encantó esta serie, hoy en día nos llegan muchas series para entretener al público, pero esta no solo hace eso, sino que viene cargada de una belleza de paisajes, diferencias culturales y honor samurái. Es una clase magistral de historia universal o al menos de esa parte del mundo. Aunque esta historia está basada en un libro que no he leído, no sabía que el libro estaba basado en el marinero William Adams que fue el primer inglés en llegar a Japón y además en los años 80 hubo una serie de televisión con la misma temática, todo eso lo supe después de ver la serie y buscar información en internet, así que solo empecé a verla por las buenas recomendaciones que leí en la comunidad.

This story is set in 17th century feudal Japan after the arrival of the Portuguese in those lands. When an English ship arrives at the coast of Japan, its crew was almost dead because they had been adrift for a long time without provisions. John Blackthorne is the pilot of that ship, who after arriving in Japan is called Anjin, which means pilot in Japanese. From the beginning, the pilot’s sole purpose was to become the first Englishman to conquer Japan, but the Portuguese had already been in those lands for years doing business with the locals and bringing their Catholic religion to those who wanted to join.

Anjin is taken in by Lord Toranaga, one of the five regents of Japan, as the problem of communicating with the language arises, Toranaga commissions one of his vassals, faithful and loyal follower Mariko, who became a Catholic years ago and knows the pilot’s language, to serve as a translator. So they spend a lot of time together.

Esta historia está ambientada en el Japón feudal del siglo XVII, tras la llegada de los portugueses a aquellas tierras. Cuando un barco inglés llega a las costas de Japón, su tripulación estaba casi muerta porque llevaban mucho tiempo a la deriva sin provisiones. John Blackthorne es el piloto de ese barco, que tras llegar a Japón es llamado Anjin, que significa piloto en japonés. Desde el principio, el único propósito del piloto era convertirse en el primer inglés en conquistar Japón, pero los portugueses ya llevaban años en aquellas tierras haciendo negocios con los lugareños y llevando su religión católica a los que querían unirse.

Anjin es acogido por Lord Toranaga, uno de los cinco regentes de Japón, como surge el problema de la comunicación con el idioma, Toranaga encarga a una de sus vasallas, la fiel y leal seguidora Mariko, que se hizo católica hace años y conoce la lengua del piloto, para que le sirva de traductora. Así pasan mucho tiempo juntos.

These are the three most important characters of the series, although in the story from which it was inspired, the Englishman is the protagonist, here the character with more strength is Toranaga, since he makes all the decisions, even those that we believe that were not taken by him or that he is ignorant of them. Everything goes through his hands and his brain. The actor Hiroyuki Sanada is the one who embodies Toranaga and he is excellent. This character is a strategist and sees in Anjin a means of distraction and innovation for his war tactics, now that he is in dispute with the other four regents, especially with Ishido, a man of conspiracy and who occupies the palace of Osaka, where the heir of Japan also lives.

Estos son los tres personajes más importantes de la serie, aunque en la historia en la que se inspira, el inglés es el protagonista, aquí el personaje con más fuerza es Toranaga, ya que él toma todas las decisiones, incluso aquellas que creemos que no fueron tomadas por él o que las ignora. Todo pasa por sus manos y su cerebro. El actor Hiroyuki Sanada es quien encarna a Toranaga y está excelente. Este personaje es un estratega y ve en Anjin un medio de distracción e innovación para sus tácticas de guerra, ahora que está en disputa con los otros cuatro regentes, especialmente con Ishido, un hombre conspirador y que ocupa el palacio de Osaka, donde también vive el heredero de Japón.

The series has a lot of historical appeal and that is one of the things I liked the most, it is also true that all the details were very well cared for, from the setting, the costumes, the culture, even the way of walking. One of the many things is the life of the Samurai or rather their honor and the value of the word, although there are also those who lack it, but still know how to accept the consequences of their actions in an honorable way, but for the most part they were respectable and respectful. When John (Anjin), who is played by Cosmo Jarvis, arrives in Japan, he is a barbarian, uneducated and thought he was going to find a civilization more savage than his own, so meeting this culture makes him have a shock and change of perspective.

La serie tiene mucho atractivo histórico y eso es una de las cosas que más me ha gustado, también es cierto que todos los detalles estaban muy cuidados, desde la ambientación, el vestuario, la cultura, incluso la forma de caminar. Una de las muchas cosas es la vida de los Samurai o mejor dicho su honor y el valor de la palabra, aunque también los hay que carecen de ella, pero aun así saben aceptar las consecuencias de sus actos de forma honorable, pero en su mayoría eran respetables y respetuosos. Cuando John (Anjin), que es interpretado por Cosmo Jarvis, llega a Japón, es un bárbaro, inculto y pensaba que iba a encontrar una civilización más salvaje que la suya, por lo que conocer esta cultura le hace tener un shock y cambio de perspectiva.

I can’t stop talking about the women in the series, they have been raised to obey their husbands and accept any decision that comes from him, even the right to life belongs to the husband. One of the things I liked the most was to see the Japanese women speaking with such tranquility, so aware of the roles they play in life, very brave, giving their all for the man who is in charge, whether it is the husband or above him is the regent, which in this case was Toranaga. One of them is Mariko, played perfectly by actress Anna Sawai, she looks beautiful, plus all of the above that I already said I liked.

No puedo dejar de hablar de las mujeres de la serie, han sido educadas para obedecer a sus maridos y aceptar cualquier decisión que venga de él, incluso el derecho a la vida pertenece al marido. Una de las cosas que más me gustó fue ver a las mujeres japonesas hablando con tanta tranquilidad, tan conscientes del papel que juegan en la vida, muy valientes, dándolo todo por el hombre que manda, ya sea el marido o por encima de él esté el regente, que en este caso era Toranaga. Una de ellas es Mariko, interpretada perfectamente por la actriz Anna Sawai, está bellísima, además de todo lo anterior que ya he dicho que me ha gustado.

According to the comparisons that John Blackthorne (Anjin) makes of the cultures between England and Japan, we realice how different they were. One of the things that shocked me as well as him, was the value of human life, you live or die and nobody cares, because the important thing is to keep your honor and that of your family and if one of the ways to do it is to end your own life, it is acceptable and approved by the rest of the society, because what counts is your word. Hey, like John, this seemed a bit extreme to me, but that’s how it was at that time and in that Samurai culture.

Según las comparaciones que John Blackthorne (Anjin) hace de las culturas entre Inglaterra y Japón, nos damos cuenta de lo diferentes que eran. Una de las cosas que me chocó al igual que a él, fue el valor de la vida humana, vives o mueres y a nadie le importa, porque lo importante es mantener tu honor y el de tu familia y si una de las formas de hacerlo es acabar con tu propia vida, es aceptable y aprobado por el resto de la sociedad, porque lo que cuenta es tu palabra. Oye, como a John, esto me pareció un poco extremo, pero así era en aquella época y en aquella cultura samurái.

In order to appreciate everything I said about the language and the tranquility of the characters, I found it important to watch this series subtitled, I loved doing it this way, so I recommend that if you have not seen it, do not dare to watch it dubbed because you will lose a very important part of the charm.

Para lograr apreciar todo lo que dije del idioma y la tranquilidad de los personajes me pareció importante ver esta serie subtitulada, me encantó hacerlo de esta manera, así que te recomiendo que si no la has visto no te atrevas a verla doblada porque se va a perder parte muy importante del encantó.
