If you ask around what makes people fall in love with some particular movies, it can be the movie settings. My dream to visit New York hasn’t come true yet and that’s why I still bank on watching more New York movies until I get to visit there someday.
If you’re also a New York fanatic like me, I think you should consider watching other movies like Synedoche and Taxi Driver.
At last, I went for a movie which has New York being portrayed in it well titled ”Gangs of New York 2002”

Plot

Gangs of New York, an American epic historical drama directed by Martin Scorsese. This movie takes us well back to the crazy days of New York when some men were gangsters and not minding if they lose their lives to it. That’s exactly what happend in this eighteens themed movie.

The slumof Five Points had two rival gangs in 1846 which were “Anglo-Protestant Confederation of American Natives” led by Bill The Butcher and “The Dead Rabbits” led by Valon. This movie may actually get you reading how life used to be in the ancient New York days.
Bill gets into a fight with Vallon and kills him with a very sharp knife which outlawed the Dead Rabbits gang in the territory and Bill was in full control.
Amsterdam, Vallon’s son hides the knife which is used to kill his father and is taken to an orphanage home.

After sixteen years, Amsterdam gets back into New York but meets with Johnny, an old acquintance who recognizes who he is. He tells Johnny about his plan and Johnny can’t wait for that moment to get Bill killed so the territory will be for “The Dead Rabbits” again. Amsterdam gets back to New York with the aim of killing Bill the Butcher with the same knife being used to kill his father.

After Johnny sees Amsterdam with his pickpocket crush, Jenny, he gets jealous and reports to Bill The Butcher about the intentions of Amsterdam including who he really is.
Amsterdam gets his late father’s gang members in support of him and they join the fight. At last, Amsterdam and Bill The Butcher faced themselves in the fight and Amsterdam stabs him with the same knife used to kill his father.

Finally, Amsterdam buries the kinfe beside his father’s graveyard as a tribute to his father.

What I liked about the movie

The realness of this movie is top notch. This is a kind of movie that you watch and you get into it like it’s happening in real life. Even though the movie portrays something that happens in real life, it was portrayed very well just like gangs of the ancient days was. That made it more interesting.

I also like the fact that despite the odds, Amsterdam was able to fulfill his wish by ending the life of Bill The Butcher with the knife which was used to end his father’s life.

What part of it do I find interesting?

The part where Amsterdam got back is where I find most interesting. Who would have thought Amsterdam will come back after sixteen years. That’s a very longtime but he was keen on taking a revenge for his father.

Any scene that pops into my mind?

That’s where Bill The Butcher got killed. Here, it’s not like I pity him because he reaped what he sow but it got me emotional seeing a child take revenge for his late father.
Another thing which makes it more emotional is how Amsterdam waited after sixteen good years just to achieve his goal.
Sixteen years is literally enough for another person to forgive and forget what was done to him.

Why do I think this movie is great?

It’s great because it portrays what used to happen in the ancient New York days. Also, it’s great because all actors practiced what is called method acting by putting all their bodies and souls into their roles.

In a nutshell, this is a very interesting movie which I will rate 8/10. You can as well give it a watch.

Here is my entry to CineTv Contest #128.
