CineTV Contest: “Papa Ajasco The Series” My Childhood Comedy.

It’s lovely how this contest makes me travel back to twenty years ago when I’ll sit at the front of our television in the living room laughing hysterically at the jokes of Papa Ajasco.
Every evening, you barely find a Nigerian kid outside their homes. We all were going to be busy watching Papa Ajasco. Even as a stubborn child, I always make sure to listen to my mum every evening so she would let me watch Papa Ajasco. Not watching it was the greatest punishment anyone can ever give to me.

Papa Ajasco was the most popular series back then in Nigeria. It’s about a family of comedians which includes Papa Ajasco, Mama Ajasco, Bobo Ajasco, Boy Alinco and Miss Pepeiye. A family where their lives revolve around comedy.
I remember clearly the slang of Papa Ajasco ojigbijigbijigbi which makes me laugh out so loud back then. Ojigbijigbijigbi simply meant, what kind of a thing is this?

Then, the most funny part of it is whenever Papa Ajasco opens his cap and shows his bald head. No one will ever see Papa Ajasco’s bald head and never laugh😅. It was extremely bald. And if he finds himself in a tight situation, he’ll yell ojigbijigbijigbi and rub his bald shiny head with his hands.

Should I tell you another funny character? It’s the Boy Alinco. I wonder why we wears two glasses on his eyes. The way he talks, expresses himself and even walks keeps us laughing and rolling on the floor.
And, whenever he messes anything up in the house, Papa Ajasco will yell with his two hands on his bald head ojigbijigbijigbi.

Just before I forget, I’ll have to commend Papa Ajasco’s funny looks. You should think about it. How will a man wear a shirt, knot his tie and end up wrapping a towel round his body. What kind of a dressing is that? This is one of the things that cracks me up whenever I watch it.

As a child, I was so used to the series that I knew the times when Papa Ajasco will say his regular slang so it never catches me unaware. So, we basically say the ojigbijigbijigbi together with the Papa Ajasco.

I vividly remember a scene in the series. Some thieves broke into the house of Papa Ajasco. They were already looting their house and taking all their properties until Boy Alinco went inside to take Bobo Ajasco’s water gun to threaten the thieves.
The thieves were baffled at first but when they saw that Boy Alinco brought out a water gun and not a real gun, they took over again.

Isn’t that funny? How will a grown up man name himself “Boy Alinco” and how will he use a toy gun to threaten thieves that were holding real guns? That part cracked me up.

Papa Ajasco never wants to admit that he’s hungry. He has a big pot belly and even though he’s dying of hunger, if you ever ask him if he’s hungry, he’ll say I’m not hungry. This is one way his wife, Mama Ajasco starves him until he begs for food.

Well, we keep growing everyday. Just a few months ago, I was opportune to go to a movie premiere and I saw the real Papa Ajasco. I hugged the man as he is one of those who made my childhood fun. It was so nice to see how much he influenced my childhood.

If I could find my way, I’ll watch Papa Ajasco over and over again and say ojigbijigbijibi with my two hands on my head just like Papa Ajasco does.

I enjoyed watching papa Ajasco while growing up.
It's a family drama enjoyed by my family then.
I love it that it brought us together as a family because everybody comes together to watch it and it is aired in a specific time.
