NAPOLEON - The movie review
I am rating this movie a 5/10 because I believe this piece here could have had few more writers involved to give the audience a reason for an investment but I guess it is what it is haha.
This is a "based on a true story" semi-biographical movie about Napoleon. Most of the events are facts, but a lot of the personal interactions are embellished for entertainment.
This is primarily the story of how Napoleon's work-life balance was rather one-sided as he was fixated on becoming France's savior and Emperor at the expense of his personal life with Josephine, even to the point of divorcing her just so that he could marry a woman capable of bearing him an heir. Chaos ensues.
What the movie truly does expose is the fickle nature of French Politics and lack of any thought or care regarding the lives of those doing the actual fighting. The generals might as well have been playing a video game for all they cared.
Joaquin Phoenix does a masterful job as Napoleon, and Vanessa Kirby is simply delicious as Josephine.
The problem is that the the characters themselves don't illicit the audience to care about them as they are so flawed and screwed up that their lack of happiness is more Karma than sad. Napoleon is a whiny, narcissistic, cuckold, with delusions of grandeur and Josephine is a pouty, controlling, promiscuous gold-digger. It's hard to care about whether their lives work out for them.
Fun: The battle scenes are brutal, the personal interactions bounce between cute and pathetic. It's much more dramatic than fun. It really needed more depth and a reason for the audience to become invested.
Preachy: Hard to say. It could have worked well as an anti-war movie and an anti-conquest\colonization movie, with different writers and less historical accuracy, but it's all White on White violence and that doesn't sell to the Woke.
The movie is 2 Hours, 38 minutes, so bring your stunt bladder or wait until you can stream it.
Maybe the reason why I didn't enjoy this movie that much was because it was based on the true life story? I mean let's be frank life is always boring but that being said the movie was good although. In fact the fact that it got me expecting something more and keeps me going to the very end of the movie is something great or is it not? Haha
Please pardon my behavior this is just my way of expressing my thoughts and mind you this review right here is basically my personal opinion towards this movie and so what you might draft out from this movie entirely different based on different perspectives so before you settle with my review you might as well want to watch it for yourself so you can pin it to your own opinion and not to get the wrong idea because you might like it.
And who did I mention this movie is quite long? I mean the watching hours, so if you want to watch this movie you will need popcorn to keep yourself busy trust me. So go go, what are you waiting for? Go watch and give your review.
I'm agreeing with many points you made and I, too, think that they took an interesting take in the film. Some are ok and some are questionable. The movie is not screaming fun to me, but I like that it's new and cast are brilliant.
Exactly. It didn't scream fun but it was quite okay and made a quiet brilliant show. Thank you so much @nomnomnoodle , I'm glad to have you look into my review and merry Christmas to you 🤗
