Years ago I stopped watching the programming of traditional television channels, and I stopped consuming mechanically what the media put at my disposal. As a response to a personal need to make better use of my time, I have become very selective in the audiovisual content I consume, and I only watch things that I consider that contribute something to me.

In this space, accompanied by brief personal reviews, I share some of those audiovisual contents in general, which according to my personal parameters, are worth watching. I hope you enjoy them.

Hace años que dejé de ver la programación de los canales de televisión tradicionales, y dejé de consumir mecánicamente lo que los medios ponen a mi disposición. Como respuesta a una necesidad personal de aprovechar mejor mi tiempo me he vuelto muy selectivo en los contenidos audiovisuales que consumo, y veo solo cosas que considero que me aportan algo.

En este espacio, acompañados de breves reseñas personales, comparto parte de esos contenidos audiovisuales en general, que de acuerdo a mis parámetros personales, vale la pena ver. Espero los disfruten.

One of the things I like most about Netflix is the variety of origins of its content. In addition to the classic Hollywood material, and american in general, we can find on the platform content generated all over the world, and therefore of different characteristics than what the mainstream has accustomed us to.

One of these contents is the Icelandic miniseries titled 'Katla'. The story revolves around the glacier of the same name, Katla, its volcanic activity, and a village near it, which is now virtually uninhabited because of how dangerous it is to live so close to the glacier.

It all begins when a naked woman completely covered in volcanic ash appears wandering in the vicinity of the glacier. This woman turns out to be a former temporary inhabitant of the village, but the intriguing thing is that no years have passed for her, and her last memories are from when she worked at the local hotel. Even more surprising is that another version of her, one who left the village and returned to her native Sweden, lives, and she does not understand who this "double" of herself is, who shares her same memories and for whom no time seems to have passed, neither physically, mentally nor emotionally.

This premise is very intriguing, and one cannot help but begin to speculate what direction the story will take. But what is interesting is that in practically every chapter another person reappears, another double that shatters our theories, and each reappearance is more surprising than the last.

In the end the story is resolved by resorting to a commonplace, an explanation that at first glance seems easy and trite, but here the series surprises us again because it gives a very interesting unexpected twist. In the end all the pieces fall into place, and the story is resolved by revealing another layer of information and depth that weaves very subtly, almost imperceptibly throughout its 8 episodes.

The ending is very satisfying because the stories of the characters are closed in very varied and meaningful ways, but always leaving some ambiguity that allows the viewer to draw his or her own conclusions. This is a very well done series in every way, that grabs you from the first episode and never lets you go, even when it reaches its end. Highly recommended.

'The Valhalla Murders' also takes place in Iceland, but in this case in its capital, Reykjavik. It is a detective story about a series of murders linked to a boarding school for young boys. It is very interesting to contrast the police series we are used to, full of shootings and chases, with this one, in which the policemen are sometimes not even armed. But the plot is so well developed that you don't even miss these clichés so common in the genre.

The story revolves around Kata, a prominent Icelandic detective in charge of the investigation, and Arnar, a detective who arrives from Oslo, Norway, to support the investigation. The development of these main characters, and all that surrounds them, runs parallel to the development of the story itself, and is intimately related to it, something that is revealed to us as the story progresses.

Unlike American series, in which the story generally revolves around the crimes, this story revolves more around those who solve them, with all their internal dramas, strengths and contradictions.

The protagonists, especially Arnar, a sparing cop of few words, gain depth episode by episode, and their personal stories almost rival the story of the crimes themselves. Influence peddling, corruption, child abuse, the weight of appearances, family secrets, and how the past impacts the future, are at the heart of a realistic story very well told, filmed and directed.

In this story one identifies with the protagonists, but sometimes also with some of the villains, who were not born as such, but were built by circumstances. But one is also horrified by the evil that can be behind the most seemingly endearing faces and people. This is one of those series that you simply can't stop watching and when they end they leave you wanting more similar content.

If you are looking for something different, but of great quality, despite not being as mediatic as 'True Detective' to give an example, this is an excellent choice. Highly recommended.

Una de las cosas que más me gustan de Netflix es la variedad de orígenes de su contenido. Además del clásico material de origen hollywoodense, y norteamericano en general, podemos encontrar en la plataforma contenido generado en todo el mundo, y por ende de características diferentes a las que el mainstream nos tiene acostumbrados.

Uno de estos contenidos es la miniserie islandesa titulada 'Katla'. La historia gira en torno al glaciar del mismo nombre, Katla, su actividad volcánica, y un pueblo cercano a este, que ahora se encuentra prácticamente deshabitado debido a lo peligroso que es vivir tan cerca de dicho glaciar.

Todo comienza cuando una mujer desnuda y cubierta completamente de ceniza volcánica aparece vagando en las inmediaciones del glaciar. Esta mujer resulta ser una antigua habitante temporal del pueblo, pero lo intrigante es que por ella no han pasado los años, y sus últimos recuerdos son de cuando trabajaba en el hotel del lugar. Más sorprendente aún es que otra versión de ella, una que sí se fue del pueblo y regresó a su natal Suecia, vive, y no entiende quien es esta "doble" de ella misma, que comparte sus mismos recuerdos y por quien no parece haber pasado el tiempo, ni física, ni mental ni emocionalmente.

Esta premisa resulta muy intrigante, y uno no puede evitar empezar a especular que rumbo tomará la historia. Pero lo interesante es que prácticamente en cada capítulo reaparece otra persona, otro doble que echa por tierra nuestras teorías, y cada reaparición resulta más sorprendente que la anterior.

Al final la historia se resuelve acudiendo a un lugar común, una explicación que de botepronto parece hasta fácil y trillada, pero aquí la serie vuelve a sorprender porque le da un giro inesperado muy interesante. Al final todas las piezas van cayendo en su sitio, y la historia se resuelve revelándonos una capa más de información y de profundidad que hilvana muy sutilmente, casi de manera imperceptible a lo largo de sus 8 episodios.

El final es muy satisfactorio porque las historias de los personajes se cierran de maneras muy variadas y llenas de sentido, pero dejando siempre cierta ambigüedad que le permite al observador sacar sus propias conclusiones. Esta es una serie muy bien lograda en todos los sentidos, que te atrapa desde el primer episodio y nunca te deja ir, ni siquiera cuando llega a su final. Altamente recomendable.

'Los Asesinatos de Valhalla' se desarrolla también en Islandia, pero en este caso en su capital, Reykjavik. Se trata de una historia de corte policiaco alrededor de una serie de asesinatos vinculados a un antiguo internado para jóvenes. Resulta muy interesante el contraste de las series policiacas a las que estamos acostumbrados, llenas de balaceras y persecuciones, con esta, en que los policías a veces ni siquiera van armados. Pero la trama está tan bien desarrollada que ni siquiera se extrañan estos clichés tan socorridos en el género.

La historia gira en torno a Kata, una destacada detective islandesa a cargo de la investigación, y Arnar, un detective que llega desde Oslo, Noruega, para apoyar en la investigación. El desarrollo de estos personajes principales, y todo lo que les rodea, se da en paralelo al desarrollo de la propia historia, y está íntimamente relacionada con esta, algo que se nos va revelando conforme avanza la historia.

A diferencia de las series norteamericanas, en las que por lo general la historia gira en torno a los crímenes, esta historia gira más en torno a quienes los resuelven, con todos sus dramas internos, sus fortalezas y sus contradicciones.

Los protagonistas, sobre todo Arnar, un policia parco y de pocas palabras, ganan profundidad episodio a episodio, y sus historias personales casi rivalizan con la historia de los propios crímenes. El tráfico de influencias, la corrupción, el abuso infantil, el peso de las apariencias, los secretos de familia, y como el pasado impacta el futuro, son el meollo de una historia realista muy bien contada, filmada y dirigida.

En esta historia uno conecta con los protagonistas, pero a veces también con algunos de los villanos, que no nacieron como tales, pero fueron construidos por las circunstancias. Pero también uno se horroriza con la maldad que puede estar detrás de las caras y personas más entrañables en apariencia. Esta es de esas series que simplemente no puedes dejar de ver y que cuando terminan te dejan con ganas de más contenido similar.

Si buscas algo diferente, pero de gran calidad, a pesar de no ser tan mediática como 'True Detective' por dar un ejemplo, esta es una excelente opción. Altamente recomendable.
