Couch Surfing
It's been quite some time since I wrote a post about what I have been watching lately. The truth is, it has mostly been filled with NCAA basketball games and my nieces streaming softball games. Here and there in between I have been able to catch a show or two. Some with @mrsbozz, some without.
It wasn't that long ago that I would leave the room only to come back and find that Jovi had taken my spot on the couch. Unfortunately (no really), she can't get up on the couch anymore, so I don't have to worry about that. I kind of miss it though.
I've actually got a pretty long list of titles to cover. It spans all the way back to the middle of last year and when I share it you are probably going to think I watch a lot more TV than I really do. It really only adds up to about an hour each night and then maybe a little more on the weekends depending if we have a lot going on in the middle of the day or not.
As summer approaches, my time sitting in front of the TV will dwindle even more as we spend our weekends on camping trips and our weeknights sitting on the deck watching the sunset. That's the hope anyway, but I can't control the weather.
Let's get to it then shall we?
The Wheel of Time season 2
I'll be the first to admit that I never read the Wheel of Time books when I was younger. Given my overall reading speed, it's likely that I will probably never read them. I was pretty happy to hear from more than one person that the current show on Amazon Prime isn't too far off from the books.
I know it's impossible to capture the magic of a book in a movie, but I am happy to hear that Wheel of Time does a passable job.
I really dig Rosamund Pike and the overall politics of the world is quite interesting. Season 2 picks up a bit after where season 1 left off and if I have to be honest, I actually like it a bit more than the first season. I think part of it just has to do with my familiarity with the characters now. In the first season I was still getting a feel for the whole thing.
I definitely recommend this one though.
Dark Winds
Dark Winds is a period piece that I saw advertised on AMC quite a while ago. I kind of forgot about it and then I circle back to it after they had two full seasons out. It takes in the 1970's in the southwest and follows the lives of a couple Native American police officers.
Like most shows these days, this is based on a book series called "Leaphorn and Chee" or something like that. One of the things that really stood out to me about this show is the fact that both Robert Redford and George RR Martin are producers on the show. Those two names alone should be enough to get you interested in the show.
You probably won't be surprised to find that I highly recommend this one as well. As is the case with most shows these days, there aren't that many episodes per season, so you can blow through the whole two seasons pretty quickly. It also looks like there is a third season on the way.
Painkiller
I saw someone wrote a review on this a while ago, and while I watched it several months ago, the subject matter of Painkiller is still haunting me a bit. Perhaps it has to do with me recently suffering some back pain. You can say you would never see yourself going down the path of opiate addiction, but it happens to people every day. More easily than you might think.
Matthew Broderick is at his creepy best in this show. You won't see any hints of the fun loving Ferris Bueller here. I know this is a dramatization, but it's pretty disgusting what Purdue pharma did and just how widespread this whole thing was. People really had no clue the damage they were doing back then. Thank goodness we know now, but unfortunately, the genie is kind of out of the bottle.
Lilyhammer
Lilyhammer is one of the few misses that the missus and I have tried to watch in the past year. We had just finished another show and we were looking for something interesting to watch during the network TV Winter break. It had been on my radar for a little bit, so when @mrsbozz mentioned it, I figured let's give it a shot.
We made it through the first episode and that was all my wife needed to know that she wasn't interested. We tried to enjoy it, but there was just something stunted about it that we couldn't quite follow along with.
It just felt low quality or wooden or something. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was just something that didn't hit with us. I might try to circle back to it on my own one day when I don't have anything better to watch. If you have seen it can you tell me if it gets better after the first episode?
That might be enough to make me change my mind.
I've still got about twelve more shows to share with you, but I am going to leave it at that for today.

I have to catch the new season of a Wheel of Time, I quite liked the first one. Lillyhammer sounds abit silly, maybe he can encounter the girl from the dragon tattoo?
Haha, maybe. I need to circle back to it myself later on an maybe watch a few more episodes. It will be a hard pass from my wife though. I don't think you will be disappointed with WoT season 2. It was good stuff.
There's always more to watch than there is time to do so... I may check of Wheel of Time, just haven't had time. Just watched The Gentlemen on Netflix, it was surprisingly good! I think I may try out the 3 Body Problem next.
A shame Jovi can't get up on the couch anymore. It's tough to watch your dog get older...
My wife and I started The Gentlemen a little bit ago. We are only about half way through so far. The Three Body problem is on my list. Who knows when I will get to it. Yeah, she has been having a rough go of it lately. Getting old sucks.
The general feeling I got from the Wheel of Time Reddit is that the TV show butchers the books, changing pretty much everything. haha so yknow, I have heard that side of the opinion. But of course there is the other side that I'm sure likes the chances. It's the same in the LOTR community, with book purists who want to burn down the films, angry about every change and feeling that they destroy the books (Tolkien's son was of this opinion) but other's like the changes.
I read the first 8 wheel of time books back in high school. I think the first 3 books are fantastic. But then they get confusing and start to contradict themselves and stall bit time, so really from book 4 to book 8 almost nothing major happened. The common idea among fans at the time was his editor stopped editing him because he married her, and his writing really needed editing. Finally sometime when I was in university book 9 came out. I read through it but it was a mess. One of the major characters (Mat) and major plot points weren't even in the book. It was basically more stalling as he juggled more unimportant threads of the overall story and ignored the main plots. I think he wrote 3 more stalling books before he died, then the guy who replaced him wrapped up the entire story in 3 books.
So my memories of the series are mixed. Loves the first 3 books. The rest...meh. Then I never read the ending. I'll check out the TV series sometime if I get the chance. Any tightening of the story can't be a bad thing.
Very interesting. I guess I had not heard that side of it, but I am not surprised people feel that way.
Painkiller was awesome and seeing Matthew Broderick absolutely nail a role like that was a surprise to me. I didn't like Lillehammer as much as I thought I would.
I think I'm going to see the painkiller soon, it's been on my list for a while now. Sorry about your Jovi, most times we have to enjoy the moments we have with them, when these periods come, those memories are only what remains.
