I saw the Venezuelan film, Simón: I was emotionally and morally shattered [ESP/ING]

Creo que ningún venezolano está preparado para ver Simón, y en general ningún ser humano, pero, cuando eres venezolano y además viviste la época de las protestas en Venezuela, necesitas realmente prepararte psicologicamente. Esta película la vi el viernes, y quede moralmente devastada, así que, hablemos profundamente de esta película, que ya está disponible en Netflix.
Simón, es la historia de un chico líder de un grupo estudiantil en Venezuela, que logra huir del país e intenta hacer una vida en Miami. Sin embargo, al intentar pedir asilo político, conocemos los miedos y traumas de su experiencia al haber sido torturado por la dictadura venezolana.
I think no Venezuelan is prepared to watch Simon, and in general no human being, but, when you are Venezuelan and also lived through the time of the protests in Venezuela, you really need to prepare yourself psychologically. I saw this movie on Friday, and I was morally devastated, so, let's talk deeply about this movie, which is now available on Netflix.
Simon, is the story of a boy leader of a student group in Venezuela, who manages to flee the country and tries to make a life in Miami. However, as he tries to seek political asylum, we learn about the fears and traumas of his experience of being tortured by the Venezuelan dictatorship.
Para contextualizar un poco, tenemos que hablar de algunos hechos reales que nutrieron esta película. Entre 2014 y 2017, en Venezuela se vivieron una serie de protestas, dónde en su mayoría jóvenes salían a las calles a pedir un cambio de gobierno. En un contexto social, en el que tenía apagones constantes en el país y escasez, tanto de medidamentos como de alimentos.
Simón es el primer largometraje del director venezolano Diego Vicentini, quién ha confesado que escribió 10 versiones del guión antes de llegar a la última versión, para este proceso se entrevisto con distintos jóvenes que fueron torturados por estar involucrados en el ambiente de las protestas.
To contextualize a little, we have to talk about some real facts that nurtured this film. Between 2014 and 2017, Venezuela experienced a series of protests, where mostly young people took to the streets to demand a change of government. In a social context, in which there were constant blackouts in the country and shortages, both of medicines and food.
Simon is the first feature film by Venezuelan director Diego Vicentini, who has confessed that he wrote 10 versions of the script before arriving at the last version, for this process he interviewed several young people who were tortured for being involved in the atmosphere of the protests.
Empezar a ver Simón, es conocer su final, porque aún lo vivimos, por eso es demorilizante porque nos recuerda o abre la herida de quienes en un momento dieron su vida esperando cambiar nuestro país. Sin embargo, la historia comienza solida, con algunas preguntas que vamos conociendo a medida que Simón empieza a contar su historia.
El personaje de Simón está complejamente construido, conocer sus recuerdos nos hace también conocer sus miedos y las secuelas de lo vivido, pero, además nos invita a entender el profunfo daño que ha vivido nuestra generación... En su camino a buscar el asilo político, conocemos a quienes lo ayudan, como Melissa, un personaje que derrocha simpatía e incluso llega a arriesgar su vida por ayudarlo.,
La trama usa las historias de sus compañeros de lucha para ayudarnos entender el contexto de cada uno, a fin de cuentas eran estudiantes que luchaban contra un sistema entero con apoyo militar. Incluso, en el pico de la trama, conocemos al coronel Lugo, que trae un monológo que te destruye emocionalmente. Y después de ello, ocurre un hecho que nos explica la gran carga de Simón.
To begin to see Simón is to know his end, because we are still living it, that's why it's slowing down, because it reminds us or opens the wound of those who at one point gave their lives hoping to change our country. However, the story begins solidly, with some questions that we get to know as Simón begins to tell his story.
Simón's character is complexly constructed, knowing his memories makes us also know his fears and the aftermath of what he has lived, but also invites us to understand the deep damage that our generation has lived... On his way to seek political asylum, we meet those who help him, such as Melissa, a character who is very sympathetic and even risks her life to help him..,
The plot uses the stories of his fellow fighters to help us understand each other's context, ultimately they were students fighting against an entire system with military support. Even, at the peak of the plot, we meet Colonel Lugo, who brings a monologue that destroys you emotionally. And after that, an event occurs that explains Simon's great burden.
En la parte visual, esta película está bien cuidada, las escenas de violencia son bastante realistas, los elementos que la construyen son bien pensados. Las actuaciones, pero, sobretodo la de Christian McGaffney como Simón, es perfectisima, sientes realmente toda la historia, realmente una de las mejores películas venezolanas que he visto en los últimos tiempo.
Siento que TODOS deberíamos ver Simón, es fuerte, sí, es una película que te desmoraliza porque nos recuerda como nos han oprimido y separado, nos cuestiona, nos cuestiona mucho, nos toca el alma para decirnos que en realidad todos hemos sufrido nuestro daño colateral y que al final por más que luchamos con mucha fuerza, logramos ser callados, de una u otro manera.
On the visual side, this film is well cared for, the scenes of violence are quite realistic, the elements that build it are well thought out. The performances, but especially Christian McGaffney's as Simon, is perfectionistic, you really feel the whole story, really one of the best Venezuelan movies I have seen in recent times.
I feel that EVERYONE should see Simón, it is strong, yes, it is a film that demoralizes you because it reminds us how we have been oppressed and separated, it questions us, it questions us a lot, it touches our souls to tell us that in reality we have all suffered our collateral damage and that in the end no matter how hard we fight, we manage to be silenced, in one way or another.
Simón apela a recordarnos que el monstruo sigue conviviendo con nostros y que mientras este en el poder, seguiremos siendo oprimidos y seguiremos viviendo historias como la planteada en Simón. Si no eres venezolano, igual siento que deberías ver esta película, es una narrativa que en definitiva no tiene desperdicio.
Simón ha hecho historia, tocando los corazones de quienes vivimos en carne propia este momento. Simón logro entrar en la Biblioteca de la Academia de Hollywood, una nominación al Goya y estrenarse en Netflix... Ojalá en algún momentos nuestras historias sigan llegando a distintos lugares del mundo.
Simón appeals to remind us that the monster is still living with us and that as long as he is in power, we will continue to be oppressed and we will continue to live stories like the one presented in Simón. If you are not Venezuelan, I still feel that you should see this film, it is a narrative that is definitely not to be missed.
Simón has made history, touching the hearts of those of us who are living this moment in our own flesh. Simón made it into the Hollywood Academy Library, a Goya nomination and a Netflix release.... Hopefully at some point our stories will continue to reach different parts of the world.
