Thelma and Louise... More Than friendship and loyalty!
Thelma and Louise is a 1991 American road crime drama directed by Ridley Scott from a script written by Callie Khouri. Starring Susan Sarandon as Louise and Geena Davis as Thelma, the film follows the two best friends on a road trip that turns into a life-altering and ultimately tragic adventure.
Plot Summary
Thelma is a meek housewife married to a controlling husband. Louise is an independent, strong-willed waitress. These women decide to take a weekend vacation down to the mountains. However, the trip goes wrong after Louise shoots and kills a man who had tried to rape Thelma. Due to the incriminating circumstances, they make a run for it and thus a cross country chase ensues for the two fugitives. While on the run, both women realize the strength of their friendship.
Thelma comes to terms with her transformation, embracing freedom and rebellion.
While avoiding the police, The unlucky couple happens to meet J.D. (Brad Pitt) in his breakthrough performance, who robbed the two women.
Though sympathetic detective Hal Slocumb (Harvey Keitel) attempts to arrest the pair through a civilized negotiation, Thelma and Louise drive off the cliff together instead of surrendering, in a dramatic shootout at the Grand Canyon.
What I love about this film is how it takes time to develop each character, especially that of both Thelma and Louise and portray them effectively in these themes of great friendship, loyalty and love. Throughout the film, we see how the two friends bonded like sisters, no doubt about the great chemistry between them, it simply is fantastic.
The only negative for me is the ending... I wish they made it home somehow...
Sometimes societal constraints turn the lives of women into a life trapped and unappealing, compelling them to break free anyhow, in order to reclaim their autonomy. I can understand why many women advocate for gender equality.
Simple plotline , great cast who all gave amazing performances. I was mesmerized by Thelma's sense of humour and how she thoroughly enjoyed her freedom, even as an outlaw, breaking the shackles that held her bound, in a constrained marriage.
I loved the music, all the sound tracks were on point.
I am giving it a whopping rating of 5/5.
