Cine TV Contest #83: Dance of the Dead [ENG/ESP]
Hello to everyone in the Cine TV community! Today I join the #83 contest of the community with the theme of the week. It's about one of the favorite subgenres of horror lovers: Zombies. So in honor of that I bring over here an old movie from 2008 by director Gregg Bishop that turned out for me to be a pleasant surprise. It's called "The Dance of Dead". I would point out that for me, Planet Terror would be number 1 on my list of zombie movies (because of the ultraviolence, the comedy, the satire and the absurdity -plus it's by Robert Rodriguez-), however I decided to go with this one for the nostalgia and for other reasons that I'll point out below. So, join me.
¡Hola a todos en la comunidad de Cine TV! El día de hoy me uno al concurso número #83 de la comunidad con la temática de la semana. Se trata de uno de los subgéneros favoritos de los amantes del terror: Los Zombies. Así que en honor a eso traigo por aquí una vieja película del año 2008 del director Gregg Bishop que resulto para mí una sorpresa agradable. Se llama "The Dance of Dead". Destaco qua para mí, Planet Terror sería la pelicula número 1 de mí lista de películas sobre zombies (por la ultraviolencia, lo cómico, la sátira y lo absurdo -además porque es de Robert Rodríguez-), sin embargo me decidí por esta por la nostalgia y por otras razones más que señalaré aquí abajo. Así que, acompáñame.
Context of the film
The story is set in the 2000s in Georgia, USA, with a group of young people as the main characters. In a typical high school, there is Jimmy who is heartbroken when his girlfriend Lindsey breaks up with him the day before graduation. Left without a dance partner, he and his group of friends (most of them being kids who are considered "nerdy and wimpy" and who also didn't have a date) decide to take that day to go to the cemetery to investigate. At the same time the dance takes place. Suddenly, thanks to the town's nuclear power plant, corpses start coming out of their graves. The group of kids must find a way to save the others.

La historia se ambienta en los años 2000 en Georgia, Estados Unidos, con un grupo de jóvenes cómo protagonistas. En una típica escuela secundaria, se encuentra Jimmy quién se haya desconsolado cuando su novia Lindsey termina con él un día antes de la graduación. Quedando sin una pareja de baile, él y su grupo de amigos (siendo la mayoría de ellos chicos considerados "nerds y débiles" y quienes tampoco tenían una cita) deciden tomar ese día para ir al cementerio a investigar. Al mismo tiempo que transcurre el baile. De repente, gracias a la planta de energía nuclear del pueblo, los cadáveres comienzan a salir de sus tumbas. El grupo de chicos deberá hallar la forma de salvar a los demás.
Reasons to watch it: zombies, teenagers, environmentalism and the weak saving the strong.
Dance of the Dead mixes not only the zombie subgenre but also adds the "teen movie" subgenre, which no doubt may persuade some not to see it because of its childish bent (teen romance, proms, heroism, etc). However, the film surprises by being quite mature and grounded, something that can't be said for many other films that have come out recently. And the actors also do a great job (being important that they really were teenagers). It has one thing going for it and that is that it's organic and that's rare in 2000's movies. Everything seems to be in its right place and it gives you everything it promises: a movie about teenagers trying to save their classmates from zombies during a prom.
The movie entertains and although little scares, that's the least of it as it manages to shine on its own. A gentle horror. The issue that also adds points to the film is that of the radioactive zombies, which in its own way, sends a message about nuclear contamination and its "possible effects". This of course tied in with the fiction and magic. Besides, this time the heroes are not precisely the strongest, most robust and beautiful kids, but the school outcasts who, with their intelligence and cunning, manage to help others. It is cheesy at times, but that makes it more charming and no less appreciated.
Motivos para verla: zombies, adolescentes, ecologismo y débiles salvando a los fuertes
Dance of the Dead mezcla no solo el subgénero de zombies sino que también añade el de "películas para adolescentes", lo que sin duda puede persuadir a algunos de no verla por su inclinación a lo infantil (el romance adolescente, los bailes de graduación, el heroísmo, etc). Sin embargo, la película sorprende por ser bastante madura y solvente, cosa que no se puede decir de muchas otras películas del que han salido recientemente. Y los actores también hacen un gran trabajo (siendo importante que realmente ellos sí eran adolescentes). Tiene un punto a favor y es que es orgánico y eso se extraña de las películas de los 2000. Todo parece estar en su justo lugar y te da todo lo que promete: una película sobre adolescentes que intentan salvar de los zombies a sus compañeros de clases durante un baile de graduación.
La película entretiene y aunque poco asusta, eso es lo de menos pues se encarga de brillar por sí sola. Un terror suave. La cuestión que también añade puntos a la película es aquello de los zombies radioactivos, lo cual a su forma, lanza un mensaje sobre la contaminación nuclear y sus "posibles efectos". Esto por supuesto ligado a la ficción y la magia. Además, en esta oportunidad los héroes no son precisamente los chicos más fuertes, robustos y bellos, sino que son los marginados de la escuela quiénes con su inteligencia y astucia logran ayudar a los demás. Resulta cursi en ciertos momentos pero eso la hace más encantadora y no por ello menos valorada.
Finally, "The Dance of the Dead" is a B-movie and although it is a small production, it achieves much more than some blockbusters. Even that touch of "trashy" (makeup, costumes and cheap props) makes it interesting. Bishop managed to be hilarious, funny, authentic and entertaining and that is rarely achieved. Finalmente, "The Dance of the Dead" es una película serie B y aunque es una producción pequeña, logra mucho más que algunas superproducciones. Incluso, ese toque de "cutre" (maquillaje, vestuario y objetos baratos) lo hace interesante. Bishop logró ser hilarante, divertido, auténtico y entretenido y eso, pocas veces se consigue.
