Movie Review: Pelo Malo [ENG/ESP]
Hello to everyone in the Movies and TV Shows community! Today I bring you a new movie recommendation and it is "Pelo Malo", a co-production between Venezuela, Argentina, Germany and Peru. Released in 2014 and directed by Mariana Rondón, it tells us the story of Junior, a nine year old boy who wishes to have straight hair to feel "pretty". That's the premise of the film but it doesn't let you fool yourself, because Pelo Malo is more than a film about identity.
Junior lives in the 23 de Enero neighborhood in Caracas, Venezuela. A set of blocks (apartments) that far from being a success, became over the years in a shabby niche. His family consists of his mother and his little brother (a baby of about one year old), with whom he feels like a stranger. Junior spends his days playing with his friend (a little girl who also lives in the same block) and it is with her, with whom the first conflict explodes; Junior wants to take a picture for school where he shows off his straight hair. He has frizzy hair, so to have it that way he resorts to straightening irons.

El día de hoy les traigo una nueva recomendación de película y se trata de "Pelo Malo", una co-producción entre Venezuela, Argentina, Alemania y Perú. Lanzada en el año 2014 y dirigida por Mariana Rondón, nos cuenta la historia de Junior, un niño de nueve años que desea tener el pelo liso para sentirse "bonito". Esa es la premisa de la película pero que no te deja engañar, porque Pelo Malo es una película acerca de la homosexualidad, la violencia, la pobreza, la ingenuidad, las familias disfuncionales y la libertad.
Junior vive en el barrio 23 de Enero, en Caracas, Venezuela. Un conjunto de bloques (apartamentos) que lejos de ser un éxito, se convirtió con los años en un nicho de mala muerte. Su núcleo familiar se compone de su madre y su hermanito (un bebé de aproximadamente un año), con quienes se siente cómo un extraño. Junior pasa los días jugando junto a su amiga (una pequeña que también vive en el mismo bloque) y es con ella, con quién explota el primer conflicto; Junior desea tomarse una foto para la escuela dónde luzca su cabello liso. Él tiene el cabello crespo, por lo que para tenerlo así recurre a planchas para alisar el cabello.
His mother, Marta, is a young widow (her husband died at the hands of criminals) and is in a financial bind because she has been fired from her job as a security guard, her only source of income. At the same time, she does not know how to deal with Junior, whom she considers a nuisance due to his "effeminate" personality and behavior. This idea comes to her when she observes certain actions of Junior, such as when he irons her hair, dances with his friends, notices a boy in a kiosk and even the fact that he wants to be a singer. This leads her to consider the option of giving Junior up for adoption to his paternal grandmother, who loves him and accepts him as he is (and wants him to take care of her in her old age). Little by little the problems will increase for Junior as he finds himself in several dilemmas and does not find any figure who understands him.
Junior's sexual identity is one of the main issues to be dealt with because what seemed to be a game for him, represents an aberration for his mother and an orientation impossible to change for his grandmother, but Junior does not seem to feel comfortable with any of these options (he is still experimenting). The second issue to be addressed is identity, as both Junior and his mother struggle to achieve some recognition (a profile, a status); Martha refuses the idea of no longer working as a watchman (something that gave her value and dignity) and Junior wants to look "nice". Both will do anything to be reciprocated. The third theme to be addressed is acceptance, as Junior's mother rejects her son (she doesn't love him) and Junior rejects his looks. The fourth theme is a bit imperceptible; it is about freedom and the right to be.
Su madre, Marta, es una joven viuda (su esposo a muerto a manos de criminales) y se encuentra en un aprieto económico ya que ha sido despedida de su puesto cómo vigilante, su única entrada de dinero. Al mismo tiempo, no sabe cómo tratar con Junior a quién considera una molestia debido a su personalidad y comportamientos "afeminados". Esta idea la tiene al observar ciertas acciones de Junior cómo cuando él plancha su cabello, baila con sus amigos, se fija en un chico de un kiosko e incluso, el hecho de que quiera ser cantante. Esto la lleva a considerar la opción de dar en adopción a Junior a la abuela paterna del mismo, quién sí lo quiere y lo acepta cómo es (además de que desea que el niño la cuide en su vejez). Poco a poco los problemas se irán incrementando para Junior pues el se encuentra en varios dilemas y no encuentra figura alguna que lo comprenda.
La identidad sexual de Junior es uno de los temas principales a tratar pues lo que parecía ser un juego para él, representa una aberración para su madre y una orientación imposible de cambiar para su abuela, pero Junior no parece sentirse cómodo ante ninguna de esas opciones (él todavía experimenta). El segundo tema a tratar es la identidad, pues tanto Junior cómo su madre luchan por conseguir cierto reconocimiento (un perfil, un estatus); Marta se niega a la idea de ya no trabajar cómo vigilante (algo que le daba valor y dignidad) y Junior quiere lucir "agradable". Ambos harán lo que sea para ser correspondidos. El tercer tema a tratar es la aceptación, pues la madre de Junior rechaza a su hijo (no lo ama) y Junior rechaza su aspecto. El cuarto tema, es un poco imperceptible; se trata de la libertad y el derecho a ser.
Regarding this last issue, we can see it more clearly with Marta's evident negligence with Junior, when she considers that Junior is gay just because he performs activities that she considers "abnormal" in a boy. In Venezuelan culture, it is common for this prejudice to be valid (well accepted) because the true "Venezuelan man" is one who meets the following profile; shaved hair, manly dress, rough, straight, no inclination towards the arts, etc. A small military man. The reality of this is very well treated in the film. It even touches on the political when on several occasions Chavez is shown (in his TV broadcasts) with shaved hair and how many people follow his example (in support of his illness or not).
Finally my friends, Bad Hair is a pretty intense movie that is more than what it appears to be. So if you want to have a good time enjoying this drama, do it with your eyes open and enjoy the ride. Without further ado, thank you very much for stopping by and I'll see you next time.
Con respecto a este último tema, lo podemos ver con mayor claridad con la evidente negligencia de Marta con Junior, al considerar que Junior es gay solo porque realiza actividades que considera son "anormales" en un niño. En la cultura Venezolana, es común que este prejuicio sea válido (bien aceptado) pues el verdadero "hombre venezolano" es aquel que cumple con el siguiente perfil; cabello rapado, vestimenta varonil, tosco, recto, sin inclinaciones hacia la artes, etc. Un pequeño militar. La realidad sobre esto es algo muy bien tratado en la película. Incluso,toca lo político cuando en varias oportunidades se muestra a Chávez (en sus transmisiones televisivas) con el cabello rapado y cómo muchas personas siguen su ejemplo (en apoyo a su enfermedad o no).
Finalmente amigos míos, Pelo Malo es una película bastante intensa, es más de lo que aparenta ser. Resulta impactante por su franqueza y la elocuencia con la que Mariana Rondón logró construir la historia. Así que sí quieres pasar un buen rato disfrutando de este drama, hazlo con los ojos abiertos y disfruta del viaje.
