SHINNING STAR // MOVIE REVIEW
PLOT
Produced by Bimbo Ademoye (who plays the character, Cara), also starring Nollywood veteran Ernest Obi (as Ehis), Chioma Chukwuka (as Endurance), Kunle Remi (as Philip), this movie tells the story of two widows/single mothers. One chose to remarry for financial security, and the other chose otherwise being already financially independent; both decisions coming with their respective consequences proving that there’s no manual to perfect parenting.
MY TAKE
This movie, nonetheless, portrayed the fact that irrespective of circumstances, knowing when to put an end to an abuser’s scheme before it escalates and being financially empowered as an individual is paramount.
The biggest lesson in this movie for me is that, whilst instilling discipline in kids so they grow up with good moral values, please ensure to separate fear from confidence. The best gift you can give to your child is the ease of confiding in you as a parent. Once a child becomes secretive because the parent is not approachable, mental health issues are not far off.
I observed that in this movie, reference was made to baseball games being almost nonexistent in schools in Nigeria. Is the end part of this movie a subtle answer to that? Well, I'm not sure about that.
This movie felt overly dramatised in a way where I feel that in this day and age, many mothers could withstand and endure some level of abuse meted out on them by their partners mostly for the sake of their children’s wellbeing. However, I don’t think there’s any mother alive who would tolerate harm coming to her child, right in her presence, and stand idly by, seeming incapacitated regardless of her financial situation. Maybe, I’m alone in thinking this. Tell me.
Although the costuming and makeup were inconsistent where the injury details were overlooked, the casting and acting were, however, somewhat impressive, especially with Ernest Obi gracing our screen after a while even though his role was annoying.
The title of the movie “Shining Star” seems detached from the storyline as I don’t see any correlation. I would have suggested, "My Tears, My Fears," "Ofoma," or something better suiting as possible titles. Again, I don't know.
Overall, this movie was emotional (I actually almost shed some tears for poor Ofoma & Lopeda). I reckon lots of kids still suffer abuses one way or another, and this should not be tolerated. Not one bit.
It was an enjoyable film with its own lessons and you might like it, so check it out if you will.
Thanks for gracing this post.
Greetings!
It doesn't seem like a bad movie to me especially with Ernest obi and Chioma chukwuka back in action! I guess I'm not really a Nollywood fan, but with this cast? hmm... It's definitely a must-see.
Would have loved to see a clip or scene where some drama was demonstrated, you know, but it's all good.
