Army of Thieves
I’m a big fan of heists. Money heists or whatever heist. The whole cracking a safe bit or picking a lock to get at something always gets me. The circumstances through which I watched this film wasn’t the most pleasant, but everything that happened in the film took away the sting and proved to be a film worthy of note to a great extent. But more than heists, I love prequels. I think I even prefer it to sequels because of the technicality involved in it. Trying to trace everything from the beginning so it fits perfectly with the main movie. It’s why I love House of the Dragons, but that’s not our focus today.

Army of Thieves is a heist comedy film based on a story written by Shay Hatten and Zack Snyder and directed by Matthias Schweigha as a prequel to Army of the Dead. It tells the story of Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert who lives a rather uninteresting life as a bank teller. He also consistently makes YouTube videos about safecracking which gets no views or attention till one day when it gets the attention of a mysterious person who comments on his video and invites him to an underground safe cracking contest. He aces the contest and is introduced to Gwendoline Starr, a skilled jewel thief who thereafter recruits him into a heist crew consisting of herself and a few others.
The heist is to break into three banks that house the three safes created by the legendary Hans Wagner. They have only one week too do this as the safes are going to be decommissioned soon. In the time when the zombies have already begun an outbreak in Nevada, how far can this crew go before being caught, literally.
First off, who knew Germans had such humour? Putting this film as action comedy was a brilliant analysis because I did laugh a lot in a lot of scenes. There was a good amount of good-natured wit, and hardly any nude scenes. I don’t know, I like stuff that I can watch with the whole family and this provided it so it was alright. The acting was also great and kept me engaged. I mean the storyline is a recycled plot and we’ve seen this whole heist storyline play out a lot oof times, so it’s a bit cliché, but that’s what made it nice. A comfortable watch without too much that set you off, filled with betrayals, good love/sentimental scenes and every other pleasant thing.
I heard a few statements about the movie being unrealistic, but honestly though, let’s learn to watch and enjoy things for what they are. If they were caught on the first heist, which is what would happen in reality, there wouldn’t be a movie in the first place. So, I don’t know, that’s why it’s a movie. You’re supposed to get away from your reality a bit.
When I saw this production. I didn’t know it was a prequel, so it functioned well as a good standalone. I realized later of the host of references to Army of the Dead, and maybe this movie would have been more enjoyable if I’d seen it beforehand, but the experience was still worthwhile. It’s not a movie I’d necessarily like to watch again, but in my books, it’s definitely a pass mark. Hope you enjoy!
