Cine Kids - A Trip Down Memory Lane - The Little Mermaid Old vs. New
Trip down memory lane
It's been a while since I published a Cine Kids trip down memory lane and with another movie appearing on the screens that reminds me of my own childhood, I figured this was the right moment to compare the old version I know with the new version that's currently in cinemas.
You may or may not have guessed that I'm talking about "The Little Mermaid". I don't know if this is one you saw during your childhood as well but I'm pretty sure most children at least saw it at some point in their lives. I'm going to check and see if I will go to the cinema with my daughter to watch the new version.
The Little Mermaid (1989)
I didn't know I was just 5 years old when the little mermaid original movie was released. I do remember the things I saw in the trailer below. When I was a child, it was definitely one of my favorite movies as it was about a mermaid and I loved the idea of a mermaid maybe existing in real life. Hey, don't judge! I was just a kid!
I absolutely loved the music, such happy vibes! But let's not forget the characters in the movie such as Nemo, who later had his own movie "Finding Nemo" which I also loved! Do you remember Sebastian? I did and watching this trailer again so many years after I saw "The Little Mermaid" movie back in my childhood, was an absolute joy!
Check it out yourself and let me know if this was the same for you.
Who didn't love Ariel and the songs from this movie when they saw it as a child? I can still see how I got drawn into this movie at the time. Every girl in my class wanted to be Ariel as she's so pretty and has such a great voice!
My daughter is also a real mermaid fan and I think it's safe to say that she'll be happy when I propose to her to go to the cinema to see "La Serinita" (The Spanish version of The Little Mermaid)
The Little Mermaid (2023)
But is it worth visiting the newer version if you have such fond childhood memories of a movie yourself? Will it kill all my childhood memories or will this be a nice new memory for me and my daughter together? I haven't seen it yet so I'm first sharing the trailer with you.
I think the newer version of The Little Mermaid is more dramatic, at least it seems to start off more dramatic taking into account how the trailer starts. Ariel seems to be obsessed with the human world but is not allowed to make contact with humans. She gets reprimanded for doing so but her curiosity doesn't seem to end there. She needs to know more about them and with a little "Help" from someone with probably not the best intentions, she gets herself a pair of legs. Will she finally have the answers she's been looking for? Will she now find happiness?
I'm curious
Although it's not a cartoon anymore, this doesn't bother me, often I find these modern remakes of old cartoons even better than the original ones. I'm hoping I feel the same about "The Little Mermaid". I think the songs in the movie may be nice as well and I will include the soundtrack I found on Youtube below so you can check it yourself:
If you've already seen the movie together with your kids, please don't spoil anything in the comment section as I would love to check it out myself first. But you're more than welcome to let me know if you liked the new movie or loved the original movie better.
