Crazy Sci Fi Films of the 80's
You know, this must have been where I got my love of sci-fi from. The 80's. Weirdly, my mother was a sci fi film lover and she pretends for that not to be the case now. I don't know why she can't remember but her getting me into all this stuff was what propelled me into being a sci fi lover.
Anyway, family history aside let's get on with the show.
The Flight of The Navigator
This one has probably the best musical score in any of the sci fi films I watched of that era. Modern, slick, and awesome. Plus everything was about Florida back then. There was a huge drive to have a lot of films made in that place.
I loved this one. Because they made the Alien quite mad. He wasn't at first of course, he was serious and sensible and adult until he melded with David's young 12 year old boy mind. Then of course he went a bit crackers.
I'll never forget this scene. "Hey Blimpo! Oink oink. Too many twinkies. Haha!"
A film for the kids, but also the adults too. Such a huge budget for this film as well. You can see with this film we had just begun experimenting with CGI. Very advanced for its time.
Back to the Future
I mean, who doesn't remember this film? Especially if you're my age. I don't think anyone can get passed the scene where Marty McFly nearly made out with his own Mother. Yuck! lol
Ah, I always love that scene. Can YOU imagine being whisked back in time and your mother hitting on you like that? Huh? Mental!
Anyway, I loved this one because of the time travelling aspect of it. Most of the actors were a bit wacky in this one; from crazy doc brown who invented the time travelling machine that Marty travelled back in time through, to Biff Tannen who was a bit of a nut job, and we all grew up with these types of people.
It was quite the storyline you see. Marty accidentally travels back in time to escape certain death and finds himself embroiled in the affairs of his parents. You see his mum and dad have a love story where they met one fateful night. Marty's Grandad hits his Dad with the car, his Mum meets his dad and they fall in love.
Sadly, it's Marty now that he hits with the car and his Mum falls in love with him. Now Marty has to set everything right and at the same time get back to his own timeline.
A crazy film that's filled with comedy and laughs!
Star Trek III - The Search for Spock.
Ah, man. I've watched all the star trek main movies but this was my first one. This was my first ever brush with Star Trek, besides the TV series of course. I never saw spock plunge his hand in the reactor to save the crew up the enterprise in the Wrath of Khan. I did eventually of course, but not until much later.
This was my first movie, and boy was it excellent. I don't even think they make movies like this anymore. They infused a sort of hope and fealty to the stars and humanity. It was kinda amazing.
One of my favourite scenes from this film would be watching Uhura play a surprisingly aggresive role in this one where she was normally the quiet and nice communications officer.
The search for spock was a solid movie, but I rated it crazy because there were lots of laughs in this one where they had McCoy trying to act like Spock. You see, Spock had left his essence with McCoy; a part of him lets say, and it was causing McCoy to behave in strange a weird ways.
Always funny watching McCoy trying to do the vulcan neck grab on people and failing badly.
Anyway, when Spock died they gave him a send off and propelled his body into space. But unknowns to Kirk and the crew that because he left his essence behind they could actually get a healer to perform a ritual and bring Spock back to life.
When they learn this they go out in search for spocks body.
But it's on a forbidden planet. Uh oh.
