Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom
Strangely the strongest memory I have of this film was of Kate Capshaw screaming all the way through this film, and she was probably one of the most memorable characters from the whole series for me. Mostly because of the screaming and acting very feminine. In fact out of all the characters in the Indian Jones films she was the most girl like. She's what you would expect if a model was whisked away into a gangland-style car chase to end up in a voodoo type Indian hell hole.
That's where this films starts off. In the beginning, the film starts off in a Chinese gangland swap for loot from the Ming Dynasty with some mobsters. Indy is double crossed and poisoned, and as that big tussle takes place they then run for a getaway to which they fly away in a plane hopefully back to the US.
Sadly, the plane pilots were actually owned (or it was assumed that they were owned) by the mobsters and the pilots vacate over the Himalayas hoping to crash the plane into a big mountain with no fuel. And the three hapless stars of this film try to take back control of the plane, but fail and escape on a dinghy that drops from the sky all the way to the river at the bottom.
It seems that in their fall they have stumbled on British owned India at the time, and as they gently sail down the river they stumble across a very, very poor village where the elders ask for help. They find out that previously this used to be a very wealthy and prosperous village but the British came and stole their luck stones which was the source of their fortune.
And from there we are whisked away on a journey of adventure, intrigue, romance, fights with big arab dudes and strongman British dudes, and lots and lots and lots of screaming. Yeah, Kate Capshaw sure bellows out those lungs whenever something goes wrong that's for sure.
There's never a dull moment in this film, and almost all of the original four films are centred around a pre world war two era when the Nazi's were in the middle of gaining power and rising and beginning to take back land and seize power. It was set around 1935, 4 years before world war two. Interestingly this film was set BEFORE the first film, so in essence it was a prequel, rather than a sequel.
This has to be my second favourite film. Mostly because of the weird Indian tribal customs and communities. This was really the first time in a film that I had been introduced to something Indian. I mean we were shown British Indian things back home, but never anything actually Indian. Interestingly when I saw the film I thought they were flying over Africa since the poverty there was reminiscent of Ethopia at the time, when Ethopia was in the news about all the famine. But little did I know poverty is experienced all over the world. This film opened my eyes to that.
I really enjoyed it! I recommend you give it a watch, or if you're like me then give it a rewatch!
Haven't watched it in years, but do remember eyeball soup, monry brains, and hearts being extracted from chests.
Having just watched the most recent one, maybe it's due a rewatch
It’s a classic for sure
