Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella star in an unexpected turn of events // Caperucita y Cenicienta protagonizan un inesperado giro de eventos

A few days ago I was watching with my daughter a Cinderella movie but of Korean production, I was surprised that in that country they take into account this kind of stories that are quite western, however, after a few minutes I noticed something very different in the plot, I had not noticed the title so I had no idea what was coming, I was just sharing a moment with my little girl who always accompanies me to watch Japanese anime.

To be honest I'm not a fan of these classics, although when I was a kid I never liked them, so I didn't have any expectations with this movie even though it was Korean. After a while things started to get interesting, events happened that have nothing to do with the original story, so I could tell that I was in front of an unpublished story, and in that sense, I decided to give it a good look.

I must say that the production did an excellent job, despite the crudeness of the story it never stopped being a movie for children, they knew how to keep that childish element but mixed it with other more realistic and deep elements that resulted in an excellent work. While the critics are not very good, this is due to subjective opinions, it is normal that no one expects a turn of events totally different from the original, something that some liked and others not so much; as far as I'm concerned I was quite pleased to see the Disney Princesses in another perspective.

Hace unos días estaba viendo con mi hija una película de Cenicienta pero de producción coreana, me llamo la atención que en ese país se tengan en cuenta este tipo de historias que son bastante occidentales, sin embargo, luego de unos minutos note algo muy diferente en la trama, no me había percatado del título así que no tenía ni idea de lo que se venía, solo compartía un momento con mi pequeña que siempre me acompaña a ver anime japonés.

Siendo honesto no soy fan de estos clásicos, aunque cuando niño las vi jamás fueron de mi mayor agrado, así que no tenía ningunas expectativas con esta película a pesar de ser coreana. Después de un rato las cosas comenzaron a ponerse interesantes, ocurrieron hechos que nada tienen que ver con la historia original, así que pude notar que estaba frente a una historia inédita, y en ese sentido, decidí darle un buen vistazo.

Debo afirmar que la producción hizo un excelente trabajo, a pesar de la crudeza de la historia jamás dejo de ser una película para niños, supieron mantener ese elemento infantil pero lo mezclaron con otros elementos más realistas y profundos que dieron como resultado una excelente obra. Si bien la crítica no es muy buena, esto se debe a opiniones subjetivas, es normal que nadie se espera un giro de acontecimientos totalmente diferentes al original, algo que a unos les cayó bien y a otros no tanto; en lo que a mi concierne me agrado bastante ver a las Princesas de Disney en otra perspectiva.

It all begins with a royal ball, just as in the original. Cinderella relegated by her stepmother and stepsisters manages to attend with the help of a fairy, but in this adventure she was not alone, but Red Riding Hood accompanies her -what the...- here we see something totally unexpected and we could ask ourselves: What is Little Red Riding Hood doing in this story, that's right, the one that once was chased by the big bad wolf now was with Cinderella on her way to the royal ball.

Around this central event several interesting things happen, on the way they pass over a dead man, initially they don't take him into account but later on he becomes indispensable in the development of the story. The ball takes place with total normality, the prince rejects Cinderella's stepsisters, who are not at all ugly compared to the original, decides to dance with Cinderella and in the middle of the ball comes the bad news to the king, his stylist has been murdered.

At this point it is impossible to turn away from the story, there are already too many different things that capture the attention, and if we have reached this point, whether we want to or not, we will end up watching the whole movie. My daughter was excited, and I wanted to see the denouement. Here begins an investigation in the purest Sherlock Holmes style, but it turns out that the most capable mind is that of Little Red Riding Hood, and on that basis she dedicates herself to solving the crime.

Let's not forget that this is a variation of the original fairy tale but keeps original elements, so before 12 o'clock they had to run out of the ball with the prince behind -typical scene- and of course, the slipper had to fall off Cinderella, there could be no difference in that, but it could be given a different meaning, and that was precisely what the producers did with this glass slipper.

Todo comienza con un baile real, tal cual en el original. Cenicienta relegada por su madrastra y hermanastras logra asistir con la ayuda de un hada, pero en esta aventura no estuvo sola, sino que Caperucita Roja la acompaña –what the…- aquí vemos algo totalmente inesperado y podríamos preguntarnos: ¿Qué hace Caperucita en este cuento?, así es, la que una vez fue perseguida por el lobo feroz ahora se encontraba con Cenicienta camino al baile real.

Alrededor ese evento central ocurren varias cosas interesantes, de camino pasan por encima de un hombre muerto, inicialmente no lo toman en cuenta pero más adelante se vuelve indispensable en el desarrollo de la historia. El baile ocurre con total normalidad, el príncipe rechaza a las hermanastras de Cenicienta, que no son nada feas comparadas con el original, decide bailar con Cenicienta y en medio del baile llega la mala noticia al rey, su estilista ha sido asesinado.

En este punto es imposible apartarse de la historia, ya son demasiadas cosas diferentes que captan la atención, y si hemos llegado a este punto, queramos o no, terminaremos viendo toda la película. Mi hija estaba emocionada, y yo quería ver el desenlace. Acá comienza una investigación al más puro estilo de Sherlock Holmes, pero resulta ser que la mente más capaz es la de Caperucita, y en base a eso se dedica a resolver el crimen.

No olvidemos que esto es una variación del cuento original pero mantiene elementos originales, así que antes de las 12 tuvieron que salir corriendo del baile con el príncipe detrás –típica escena- y claro, la zapatilla tenía que caérsele a Cenicienta, no podía haber diferencia en eso, pero si se le podría dar un significado diferente, y eso fue precisamente lo que los productores hicieron con esta zapatilla de cristal.

It was fascinating to see how they made a drama out of the whole thing, it turns out that the stylist was evil but no one knew it, he had an obsession with the maidens' long hair and cut it against their will. I am a man and I understand that women with long hair don't like to have it cut, my daughter is an example of this, she is letting it grow like Rapunzel, but the truth is that she doesn't want it cut.

I bring this up because it is an extremely important detail in the resolution of the case, although there are also others that are taken into account, and as a viewer we must be attentive not to lose the clues that are given as the story develops, only then we can find the culprit in the midst of so much suspense and also do it before Little Red Riding Hood, although I confess it is not easy, and I am sure that in the end you will end up totally surprised by the outcome.

In short, it is a production that I highly recommend. I think it is always good to see productions that are different from the original, they usually have something morbid that is usually very striking, and often turns out to be something more eye-catching than what we previously knew.

Fue fascinante ver como armaron un drama de todo este asunto, resulta que el estilista era malvado pero nadie lo sabía, tenía una obsesión con el cabello largo de las doncellas y lo cortaba en contra de su voluntad. Soy hombre y entiendo que a las mujeres con el cabello largo no les gusta que se lo corten, mi hija es un ejemplo de ello, se lo está dejando crecer como Rapunzel, pero lo cierto es que no se lo quiere cortar.

Traigo esto a acotación porque es un detalle sumamente importante en la resolución del caso, aunque también hay otros que se toman en cuenta, y como espectador debemos estar atentos para no perder las pistas que se van dando a medida que se desarrolla la historia, solo así podremos encontrar al culpable en medio de tanto suspenso y también hacerlo antes que Caperucita, aunque confieso que no es sencillo, y estoy seguro que al final terminaras totalmente sorprendido del desenlace.

En definitiva, es una producción que recomiendo ampliamente. Considero que siempre es bueno ver producciones diferentes a lo original, por lo general tienen algo de morbo que suele ser muy llamativo, y muchas veces resulta ser algo más vistoso que lo que anteriormente conocíamos.
