Animated UCM is simpler, and better - The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Sometimes nostalgia can get you to the deepest recesses of your head, in my case a weekend without much to do and a facebook post about the recent UCM debacle made me remember a series that I hadn't seen for almost a decade and that many were recommending for those looking for some quality old style Marvel animation, I'm very into all things animated (old or new) and I remembered that the series was very entertaining so I decided to give it a try.

And the first season that I have seen I can say that it is very refreshing, first of all being a series you have much more time to explore individually each character that makes up the avengers, we have the chance to see how Iron Man fights a war to end those who are using their technology, the Hulk deal with their problems with Bruce Banner, Thor in Asgard and many other characters that we see very little in the movies, plus with it also come their characteristic villains and plot lines that come straight out of the comics.

It's pretty similar to the Justice League series, only here they emphasize much more the style of the then growing UCM, several jokes, simple plot lines in this first season and not too much more tension than the avengers have with each other, because remember this is a series about building the team as well as exploring the whys of each of the characters as well as the doubts.

So we will have some dialogue and novel moments with respect to the movies, there is a chapter that I love where they accuse Captain America of murder, and between the whole Skrulls move and the evidence and conspiracies that are discovering the avengers really becomes interesting to see who is behind all this, do not forget that this series also has the advantage of being able to introduce someone like Taskmaster to the equation or some villain changes forms so most of the time you are waiting anxiously for everything to be resolved.

I can't say that there are many changes in this season, there are about ten chapters and the first few we just explore the main avengers of the team, although as you probably already know there are some modifications to the original line-up that we see in the movies (although ironically this version is more faithful to the comics and I like it more), so Hank Pym is Ant-Man this time and we also have Janet Van-Dyme as The Wasp, an addition that will make the upcoming chapters much more interesting because of the presence of the villain Ultron.

I can't say I'm too convinced by some of the characters and organisations in this series, on the one hand we have the usual terrorist group with the arsenal capacity of an entire country and on the other a counter-intelligence organisation that is always late to everything that is happening in the world, Nick Fury is not given much prominence apart from one episode along with Iron Man, after that he just limits himself to being a bridge between the avengers and the world's problems.

There are good concepts that could have been used to make a whole season, like the skrull war that is only limited to being an episode but with repercussions later on, or the time when the avengers travel to an alternate dimension where they never team up and there is a whole new set of heroes that are trying to keep the world standing, or the conspiracy that I already mentioned where it seems that Captain America has murdered someone, or Civil War...

There was a lot of opportunity with this series, on the one hand I love that they were able to include as many heroes as they could, every episode I seemed to meet a new hero taken practically from the comics to join the plot of some episode but on the other hand I understand that the amount of episodes even if it was big didn't give too much room to explore a lot of interesting stories.

Animation is usually expensive, and when the money comes from Disney although it seems to be infinite you need to have some success to justify the episodes you have on the air, I remember that this series was broadcast on the old Disney XD channel and I always expected a new episode although most of the ones that were dubbed into Spanish always took a long time.

It's a very beautiful reminder of what could be an expanded Marvel universe in animation, something similar to what DC already does with their TV movies, I would like to see something similar to the 2D style but knowing Disney and the crisis they are going through right now I think it will be best to settle for the What If.

Still I always remember this series fondly, it's very light to consume, the episodes don't last more than half an hour and are mostly entertaining, I loved it when I was a kid, and now it works well to put on the TV while I do something else, I recommend it if you want to see something different from the usual Marvel stuff and you're done with all those better series like Invincible or The Boys, mo, seriously, give it another chance.

A veces la nostalgia te puede hacer llegar a los mas reconditos pasajes de tu cabeza, en mi caso un fin de semana sin mucho que hacer y un post de facebook sobre la debacle reciente del UCM me hizo recordar una serie que llevaba casi una decada sin ver y que muchos estaban recomendando para los que buscaban algo de calidad del viejo estilo de animacion de Marvel, estoy muy metido con todo lo que es animado (sea viejo o nuevo) y recordaba que la serie era muy entretenida asi que decidi darle un chance.

Y de la primera temporada que me he visto puedo decir que es muy refrescante, en primer lugar al ser una serie se tiene mucho mas tiempo para explorar individualmente cada personaje que compone a los vengadores, tenemos la chance de ver como Iron Man combate una guerra para acabar con aquellos que estan usando su tecnologia, a Hulk lidiar con sus problemas con Bruce Banner, a Thor en Asgard y a muchos otros personajes que vemos muy poco en las peliculas, ademas de que con ello tambien vienen sus villanos caracteristicos y lineas argumentales que salen directamente de los comics.

Es bastante parecida a la serie de la Liga de la Justicia, solo que aca enfatizan mucho mas el estilo del por entonces creciente UCM, varios chistes, tramas argumentales simples en esta primera temporada y sin demasiada tension mas de la que tienen los vengadores entre si, porque recordemos que esta es una serie sobre la construccion del equipo asi como explorando los por que de cada uno de los personajes asi como tambien las dudas.

Asi que tendremos algo de dialogo y momentos novedosos con respecto a las peliculas, hay un capitulo que me encanta en donde acusan al Capitan America de asesinato, y entre toda la movida de los Skrulls y las pruebas y conspiraciones que van descubriendo los vengadores de verdad se hace interesante ver quien esta detras de todo esto, no olvidemos que esta serie tambien tiene la ventaja de poder introducir a alguien como Taskmaster a la ecuacion o algun villano cambia formas asi que la mayoria del tiempo estas esperando con ansias que se resuelva todo.

No puedo decir que haya muchos cambios en esta temporada, son una decena de capitulos y los primeros solo nos limitamos a explorar a los vengadores principales del equipo, aunque como seguramente ya sabran hay algunas modificaciones a la formacion original que vemos en las peliculas (aunque ironicamente esta version es mas fiel a los comics y me gusta mas), por lo que Hank Pym es el Hombre Hormiga en esta ocasion y tambien tenemos a Janet Van-Dyme como The Wasp, una adicion que hara mucho mas interesante los capitulos que vienen por la presencia del villano Ultron.

No puedo decir que me convenza demasiado algunos de los personajes y organizaciones de esta serie, por un lado tenemos al grupo terrorista de siempre con la capacidad arsenal de todo un pais y por el otro una organizacion de contrainteligencia que siempre llega a tarde a todo lo que esta pasando en el mundo, a Nick Fury no se le da demasiado protagonismo aparte de un episodio junto con Iron Man, despues solo se limita en ser un puente entre los vengadores y los problemas del mundo.

Hay buenos conceptos que podrian haberse usado para hacer toda una temporada entera, como la guerra de los skrulls que solo se limita a ser un episodio aunque con repercusiones mas adelante, o la vez en la que los vengadores viajan a una dimension alterna en donde nunca hacen equipo y hay toda una serie de heroes nuevos que estan tratando de mantener el mundo en pie, o la conspiracion que ya mencione en donde parece que el Capitan America ha asesinado a alguien, o Civil War...

Habia muchas oportunidades con esta serie, por un lado me encanta que pudiesen incluir a todos los heroes que podian, en cada episodio parecia que conocia a un nuevo heroe sacado practicamente de los comics para unirse a la trama de algun capitulo pero por otro lado entiendo que la cantidad de episodios aunque fuese grande no daba demasiado margen para explorar un monton de historias interesantes.

La animacion suele ser cara, y cuando el dinero viene de Disney aunque parece ser infinito necesitas tener cierto exito para justificar los episodios que tienes al aire, recuerdo que esta serie se transmitia por el viejo canal de Disney XDy siempre esperaba un nuevo episodio aunque la mayoria de los que llevaban doblados al español siempre tardaban bastante.

Es un muy hermoso recuerdo de lo que puede llegar a ser un universo expandido de Marvel en la animacion, algo similar a lo que ya hace DC con sus peliculas dirigidas a la TV, me gustaria ver algo similar al estilo 2D pero conociendo a Disney y la crisis por la que estan pasando en estos momentos creo que lo mejor sera conformarse con los What If.

Aun asi siempre recuerdo esta serie con cariño, es muy ligera de consumir, los capitulos no duran mas de media hora y son entrenidos en su mayoria, me encantaba cuando era pequeño, y ahora funcionan bien para poner en la TV mientras hago otra cosa, lo recomiendo si quieren ver algo distinto a lo usual de Marvel y ya han terminado con todas esas series mejores como Invincible o The Boys, mo, en serio, denle otra oportunidad.
