Scott Pilgrim Anime is Amazing and grips you with unexpected new storylines

Animation this year in both film and television is having a dream year, Invincible, Puss in Boots, the latest Spiderverse films and now it looks like Scott Pilgrim is coming out later this year to cap off a genre that is generating more audiences, more eyeballs watching and bringing animation into more adult and more refined territory every year.

I personally am a big fan of the movie that was released almost a decade ago, it seems to me one of those productions ahead of its time and all the whirlwind that came with the emergence of the internet and video games in popular culture, also had a huge director as Edgar Wright is one of my favorites for his humor that commonly expresses along with the scenery.

He himself is in charge of producing this Scott Pilgrim mini-series, which kept me very excited to know if they were going to adapt the original comic or go in a different direction, I felt that the franchise didn't have much to develop other than the theme of Scott vs. the Exes but boy was I terribly wrong because they have knocked it out of the ballpark with their premise.

For those of you who don't know about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, it's originally a comic book that chronicles Scott's life in small town Toronto Canada, having an Indie band, dating students and not aspiring to anything in life.. until he meets Ramona Flowers, this new girl who has come to town, they start dating but what Scott doesn't know is that now he has to face Ramona's League of Evil Exes.

The comic I started reading it right after finishing the series and although it's pretty good and is what Wright's movie is based on, in this anime they give a complete turn to another direction, you could say it's a sequel to that original story but at the same time a reboot to see the characters from other angles, and the one who takes the focus is Ramona.

The thing is that right in the first of the fights against one of the evil Exes Scott dies, unlike the first fight in the comic and the movie where there is not much effort to defeat this first evil Ex by Scott, in this one it seems that he is defeated and this first Ex, seeing that defeating Scott does not give him the right to date Ramona, makes a mutiny and takes control of the League of Evil Exes.

It's a total twist, but it nicely opens up an exploration of other characters that both in the comic and the movie we don't know too much about, such as Ramona. Who becomes a sort of main character when she discovers that behind Scott's supposed death lies a conspiracy that she ventures to investigate.

Thus we have a list of suspects that each chapter we are ruling out, most of them are Ramona's own Exes so the interesting thing here is that we find out a bit more about why Ramona left them in the first place and secondly how these actions made the Exes feel and how they defined in some ways the life they lead now. The best comparison I can come up with is that it is playing Undertale in peaceful mode.

We explore much more about the personalities of the Exes and the environment around Scott, characters that I knew little or nothing about take a leading role along with Ramona in the 8 episodes that the series has, we see new dynamics that I found new and I think it opens a new path to this franchise in all aspects.

Something I did miss was Scott and the development that has, I was talking to my girlfriend about how we found the series once finished and told me that Scott's story was already told by the movie released a decade ago, it is valid that concept but I wanted to see the original comic in motion, see the fights and get an idea of what would be a story true to the comic and with the spectacular animation that has this series.

It was a different story, I wasn't expecting it with all the promotional material they put out but it was a pleasant surprise to see that they gave Ramona a lot more development and did something similar to the comic but in reverse, the same characters in new positions that open up a sea of possibilities to see more Scott Pilgrim content in the future.

La animacion este año tanto en el cine como en la television esta viviendo un año de ensueño, Invencible, Puss in Boots, las ultimas peliculas de Spiderverse y ahora parece que Scott Pilgrim sale a finales de año para ponerle un broche de oro a un genero que esta cada año generando mas audiencia, mas ojos mirando y trayendo a la animacion hacia un territorio mas adulto y mas refinado.

Yo personalmente soy muy fan de la pelicula que sacaron hace ya casi una decada, me parece una de esas producciones adelantadas a su epoca y a todo el torbellino que se venia con la irrupcion del internet y los videojuegos en la cultura popular, tambien tuvieron a un enorme director como Edgar Wright que es uno de mis favoritos por su humor que comunmente expresa junto con la escenografia.

El mismo es el encargado de producir esta mini seria de Scott Pilgrim, que me mantuvo muy emocionado por saber si iban a adaptar el comic original o iban a ir en una direccion distinta, sentia que la franquicia no tenia mucho que desarrollar mas que el tema de Scott contra los Exes pero muchachos estaba terriblemente equivocado porque la han sacado del estadio con su premisa.

Para los que no sepan sobre Scott Pilgrim vs. El Mundo, es originalmente un comic que relata la vida de Scott en el pueblo de Toronto Canada, teniendo una banda Indie, saliendo con estudiantes y no aspirando a nada en la vida.. hasta que conoce a Ramona Flowers, esta nueva chica que ha llegado al pueblo, ellos comienzan a salir pero lo que Scott no sabe es que ahora tiene que enfrentarse a la Liga de Malvados Exes de Ramona.

El comic me lo empece a leer justo despues de terminar la serie y aunque esta bastante bien y es en lo que se basa la pelicula de Wright, en este anime dan un giro completo hacia otra direccion, podria decirse que es una secuela de esa historia original pero al mismo tiempo un reboot para ver a los personajes desde otros angulos, y la que se lleva el foco es Ramona.

La cosa es que justo en la primera de las luchas contra uno de los malvados Exes Scott muere, al contrario de la primera pelea del comic y la pelicula en donde no hay mucho esfuerzo para derrotar a este primer Ex malvado por parte de Scott, en esta parece que es derrotado y este primer Ex, al ver que derrotar a Scott no le otorga el derecho de salir con Ramona, hace un motin y toma el control de la Liga de Malvados Exes.

Es un giro total, pero abre muy bien una exploracion de otros personajes que tanto en el comic y la pelicula no sabemos demasiado, como por ejemplo, Ramona. Que se convierte en una suerte de personaje principal cuando descubre que detras de la supuesta muerte de Scott se esconde una conspiracion que se aventura a investigar.

Asi tenemos una lista de sospechosos en los que cada capitulo vamos descartando, la mayoria son los propios Exes de Ramona asi que lo interesante aca es que descubrimos un poco mas sobre por que Ramona los dejó en primer lugar y en segundo lugar como hizo sentir estas acciones a los Exes y como definieron en cierta forma la vida que llevan ahora. la mejor comparacion con la que puedo salir es que es jugar Undertale en modo pacifico.

Exploramos mucho mas sobre las personalidades de los Exes y el entorno alrededor de Scott, personajes de los que sabia poco o nada toman un rol protagonico junto con Ramona en los 8 episodios que tiene la serie, vemos nuevas dinamicas que me parecieron novedosas y creo que le abre un nuevo camino a esta franquicia en todos los aspectos.

Algo que si extrañe fue a Scott y el desarrollo que tiene, estuve hablando con mi novia sobre que tal nos parecio la serie una vez terminada y me comentaba que ya la historia de Scott estaba contada por la pelicula estrenada hace una decada, es valido ese concepto pero yo queria ver el comic original en movimiento, ver las luchas y tener una idea de lo que seria una historia fiel al comic y con la animacion espectacular que tiene esta serie.

Fue una historia diferente, no me lo esperaba con todo el material promocional que sacaron pero ha sido una grata sorpresa ver que le dieron mucho mas desarrollo a Ramona e hicieron algo parecido al comic pero a la inversa, los mismos personajes en nuevas posiciones que abren un mar de posibilidades para ver mas contenido de Scott Pilgrim en el futuro.
