It's said that any story that is told has at least two versions, one from both sides. For example, war doesn't sound the same when told by the defeated as when told by the victor, and in the case of the Second World War, to name one, there are different perceptions depending on whether you talk to the Russians, the French, the Germans, the Japanese. , etc. Only by bringing together this variety of versions and voices can one get closer to reality - or something close to it - but what happens when the parties involved don't tell any story? When there's no confession from the criminal or a complaint from the victim, how can society be aware of what has happened?

Se dice que cualquier historia que se cuente, tiene al menos dos versiones, la de uno y otro lado. And that was what Shiori Ito, a Japanese journalist in her early twenties, did in 2017 when she publicly denounced Noriyuki Yamaguchi for having raped her a couple of years ago. There will be those who think that Black Box Diaries is about just another case of a woman being sexually abused and who may not be alarmed because - to our sadness - it's something quite common, even in these times. But it would be a mistake. First and foremost because one case, just one case, of rape or sexual abuse is already too many. These things should not happen. And second because Shiori Ito was not just another victim and her abuser was not an ordinary man. In fact, the case of Shiori vs. Yamaguchi marked a turning point in Japanese society and its legislation.

Habrá quienes piensen que Black Box Diaries trata de un caso más de una mujer abusada sexualmente y que quizás no se alarmen porque - para nuestra tristeza - es algo bastante común, aún en estos tiempos. Pero sería un error. Primero y principalmente porque un caso, un sólo caso, de violación o de abuso sexual ya es demasiado. Estas cosas no deberían ocurrir. Y segundo porque Shiori Ito no fue sólo una víctima más y su abusador no era un hombre ordinario. De hecho, el caso de Shiori vs. Yamaguchi marcó un punto de cambio en la sociedad japonesa y en su legislación.

Lo primero es que cuando una persona ha sido víctima de abuso sexual, normalmente busca olvidar y seguir adelante y no denuncia el caso por razones emocionales, personales, psicológicas, que incluyen la condena de sus semejantes, el rechazo y la vergüenza. Para una mujer, confesar haber sido violada puede representar un estigma que la acompañe el resto de sus días y ante la posibilidad de vivir con esa mancha para siempre, muchas callan, lo que no las limpia, pero mantiene la vergüenza oculta de los demás, como si lo sucedido estuviera oculto en el interior de una Caja Negra (Black Box).

It turns out that Noriyuki Yamaguchi, the man who abused her, was the Washington D.C. bureau chief of the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Amid smear campaigns, discouraging messages, police negligence, unfair dismissal of her case, a questionable position of the prosecutor, suspicions of persecution and even fear for her personal integrity, Shiori fought one of the most important legal battles of the 21st century, not only for Japan but for the world and decided to tell it in a book that she published in 2018 and which she appropriately titled Black Box.

Without a doubt, one of the best documentaries I have seen.

Pero desde el inicio, es decir, desde que Shiori tomó la decisión de denunciar públicamente, estuvo grabando conversaciones, sesiones de escritura, entrevistas, investigando pistas, consiguiendo pruebas, y con todo ese material creó este documental llamado Black Box Diaries, dirigido y co producido por ella misma, que comienza como una denuncia por abuso sexual y termina como una restructuración del sistema judicial de un país y de un condenamiento más hacia las estructuras del poder patriarcal, muy propenso a aprovechar su fuerza y su alcance. We have then, on the one hand, a law on sexual crimes more than a century old, with flaws and inaccuracies that represent salvation for criminals, the complicity of the power structures, the cover-up of some, acquittals, dismissals, the silence of the majority; on the other hand, we have thousands and thousands of victims, pain, post-traumatic stress, frustration, much fear and sadness. And in between, to defend this second side from the abuse of power of the first, we find a woman with courage, determination, ethical doubts, professional responsibility, social commitment, armed only with the truth and with the desire no longer to do justice only for herself but for all the other victims of the past, the present and the future. It's inevitable not to feel visceral rage towards the abusers and all those who stood in the way of Shiori's crusade, but I prefer to surrender to the courage of this woman who drew strength from her frailty, who acted despite her fear and who for years endured disappointments, setbacks, frustrations, threats and attacks, taking her case to the ultimate consequences. Her legal battle ended in 2023, but, as she herself says in the documentary, the experience for her is not over yet because she must learn to move on and live with what happened to her. Watching Black Box Diaries is necessary because sadly neither sexual abuse nor the abuse of power has lost its relevance and we need to do something, starting by speaking out, talking about it, making it visible, denouncing and educating ourselves as a society to end this horrible problem, have any of you seen this documentary?
