I'm not a Nicolas Cage fan, but there's no denying that he's one of the most recognizable actors in the world and has one of the most prolific acting careers I've ever seen. He's done it all; he's been a firefighter, a policeman, an arms dealer, a superhero, a villain, a treasure hunter, a car thief, an angel, and a whole bunch of other things, but it seems like his best work - or the best movies he's ever been in - is long gone. I really liked Lord of War and people always talk about David Lynch's Wild at Heart, but he's made a lot of movies since then that have gotten mixed reviews.

No soy fan de Nicolas Cage, pero no se puede negar que es uno de los actores más reconocidos en el mundo entero y posee una de las carreras actorales más prolíficas que yo haya visto. Ha hecho de todo; ha sido bombero, policía, traficante de armas, super héroe, villano, cazador de tesoros, ladrón de autos, un ángel y un montón de cosas más, pero parece que sus mejores trabajos - o las mejores películas en las que participó - quedaron atrás hace tiempo. A mí me gustó mucho Lord of War y la gente siempre habla de Wild at heart de David Lynch, pero desde entonces ha hecho muchas películas que han obtenido críticas mixtas.

To mention just one example, I read good reviews of his performance and the film Mandy and the truth is that I wasn't entirely convinced. Since then, Cage has acted in about twenty films (a huge number for the last six years) and now he has returned to the cinemas with his role as a villain in Longlegs, the fifth feature film by Osgood Perkins, written and directed by himself. It's a thriller that combines aspects of horror, psychological suspense and detective novel and focuses on Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), an FBI agent recently incorporated into the unit who seems to have a very sharp intuition when it comes to following certain clues. Therefore, after an incident shown at the beginning of the film, Lee is assigned a difficult case. It's about a series of multiple murders that have occurred, ten in the last twenty years, in which the father of the family has killed his wife and children before committing suicide. The problem is that there seems to be no connection beyond this pattern, the victims didn't know each other and many years passed between one event and the next, except for a note left at each of the crime scenes in which, using a coded language written in a handwriting different from that of any of the victims, someone has tried to claim authorship of the crimes. And whoever this character is, he has only left his signature at the end of each letter: Longlegs.

Por mencionar sólo un ejemplo, leí buenas reseñas de su actuación y de la película Mandy y la verdad es que no me convenció del todo. Desde entonces, Cage ha actuado en unas veinte películas (una cantidad enorme para estos seis últimos años) y ahora ha llegado de nuevo a las carteleras con su papel de villano en Longlegs, el quinto largometraje de Osgood Perkins, escrito y dirigido por él mismo. Se trata de un thriller que combina aspectos de terror, suspenso psicológico y novela policíaca y se centra en Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), una agente del FBI recientemente incorporada a la unidad que parece tener una intuición muy aguda a la hora de seguir ciertas pistas. Por ello, luego de un incidente que se muestras al inicio de la película, a Lee le asignan un caso difícil. Se trata de una serie de asesinatos múltiples que han ocurrido, diez en los úntimos veinte años, en los que el padre de familia ha asesinado a la esposa y a sus hijos antes de suicidarse. El problema es que no parece haber una conexión más allá de este patrón, las víctimas no se conocían entre sí y median muchos años entre un evento y otro, salvo por una nota dejada en cada una de las escenas del crimen en las que, mediante un lenguaje cifrado escrito en una caligrafía diferente a la de cualquiera de las víctimas, alguien ha intentado reclamar la autoría de los crímenes. Y quienquiera que sea este personaje, sólo ha dejado su firma al final de cada misiva: Longlegs.

So is this a serial killer? If so, how come no fingerprints were ever found of anyone other than the murdered families? There were no signs of forced entry, no witnesses saw anyone else, was the killer inside the houses? And if all these deaths are indeed linked to this guy Longlegs, how has he managed to stay active all this time?

¿Se trata entonces de un asesino en serie? En ese caso, ¿cómo es que nunca se encontraron huellas de una persona ajena a las de las familias asesinadas? No hubo señales de entrada forzada, no hubo testigos que vieran a alguien más, ¿estaba el asesino en el interior de las viviendas? Y en caso de que efectivamente todas estas muertes estén relacionadas con el tal Longlegs, ¿cómo ha hecho para mantenerse en activo durante todo este tiempo?

I must confess that the mystery is interesting. As in any police thriller, we start the story with many questions and the characters' investigations lead us little by little to the solution of the enigma, but there is a difference between a normal thriller and a good thriller, and it's the way in which those clues are presented, revealed or followed. Three examples of stories that handle these revelations very well are The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Se7en and Zodiac, all directed by David Fincher, but in the case of Longlegs there are certain connections, clues and revelations that seem very forced or lack sense. I can understand that Harker receives a letter from the mysterious Longlegs at the moment in which she gets involved in the investigation, but that with those few lines she manages to decipher in minutes the cryptic language used by the murderer and that no one else has managed to decipher in twenty years of investigation, seems too much to me. Likewise, some of the other personal connections present in Harker's past and clues that have managed to survive two decades is stretching things a bit. And while I feel Monroe is well-informed and gives a good performance, Agent Lee Harker just doesn't strike me as a believable member of the FBI's investigative forces and that also weakens the story.

Debo confesar que el misterio es interesante. Como en cualquier thriller policíaco, comenzamos la historia con muchas preguntas y las investigaciones de los personajes nos van conduciendo poco a poco a la solución del enigma, pero hay una diferencia entre un thriller cualquiera y un buen thriller, y es la forma en la que esas pistas son presentadas, reveladas o seguidas. Tres ejemplos de historias que manejan muy bien estas revelaciones son The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Se7en y Zodiac, todas dirigidas por David Fincher, pero en el caso de Longlegs hay ciertas conexiones, pistas y revelaciones que parecen muy forzadas o carecen de sentido. Puedo entender que Harker reciba una carta del misterioso Lonlegs en el momento en que se involucra en la investigación, pero que con esas pocas líneas ella logre descifrar en minutos el críptico lenguaje usado por el asesino y que nadie más ha logrado descifrar en veinte años de investigación, me parece demasiado. De igual forma, algunas otras conexiones personales presentes en el pasado de Harker y pistas que lograron sobrevivir dos décadas es forzar un poco las cosas. Y aunque siento que Monroe hace un buen papel y brinda una buena actuación, la agente Lee Harker no se me hace verosímil como miembro de las fuerzas de investigación del FBI y eso también debilita la historia.

Cage's performance is pretty good, but comparing it to Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter seems exaggerated to me. Longlegs is an uncomfortable character to watch, old, pale, unkempt, who is disturbing because of his appearance and way of speaking, but who provokes more disgust than fear, I think, so although he can be a bit creepy, he doesn't seem scary to me.

Por su parte, la actuación de Cage está bastante bien, pero compararla con la que nos dejó Anthony Hopkins como Hannibal Lecter me parece exagerado. Longlegs es un personaje incómodo de ver, viejo, pálido, desarreglado, que resulta inquietante por su aspecto y su forma de hablar, pero que provoca más repugnancia que miedo, creo yo, así que aunque puede resultar un poco creepy no me parece aterrador.

Longlegs also has some successes, of course, such as some strong, violent, somewhat gory scenes that, isolated from the story, can provoke fear or something similar. The framing of certain takes is very well chosen, as is the color palette, the soundtrack whose music enhances the discomfort or danger of certain scenes and that murky atmosphere that is felt at all times. It's a production that provokes physical sensations of fear or anguish, from the sensorial, not from the construction of the story. It could have been a very good police thriller or a very good horror story if they had not mixed so many elements. Longlegs incorporates serial killers, police investigation, devil worship, terrifying dolls, mental sanatoriums, mental manipulation, distorted maternal figures, religious elements and a kind of Faustian pact, among other things. It reminded me of the over-saturated mix of themes in American Horror Story: Asylum and I think that in that excess of pieces, where not all of them fit well into the plot or where some of their advantages are wasted, the story loses strength instead of gaining it. Just as sometimes less is more, the opposite is also true. If I had to give some kind of rating to this movie, on a 10-point scale, I would give it a 5 or 6, because it's not one of the best horror movies - it has been a while since they released a really good one - but it has more successes than many others that are more bland and repetitive; and you, have you seen Longlegs? Longlegs también tiene algunos aciertos, claro, como algunas escenas fuertes, violentas, algo gore que, aisladas de la historia, pueden provocar miedo o algo parecido. Los encuadres de ciertos fotogramas están muy bien escogidos, igual que la paleta de colores, la banda sonora cuya música potencia la incomodidad o el peligro de ciertas escenas y esa atmósfera turbia que se siente en todo momento. Es una producción que provoca sensaciones físicas de temor o angustia, desde lo sensorial, no desde la construcción de la historia. Pudo haber sido un muy buen thriller policíaco o una muy buena historia de terror si no hubieran mezclado tantos elementos. Longlegs incorpora asesinos en serie, investigación policíaca, adoración del diablo, muñecas terroríficas, sanatorios mentales, manipulación mental, figuras maternales distorsionadas, elementos religiosos y una especie de pacto Faustiano, entre otras cosas. Me recordó a la mezcla saturada de temas de American Horror Story: Asylum y creo que en ese exceso de piezas, en donde no todas encajan bien en la trama o en donde se desaprovechan algunas de sus ventajas, la historia pierde fuerza en lugar de ganarla. Así como a veces menos es más, lo contrario también es cierto. Si tuviera que otorgar algún tipo de calificación a esta película, en una escala de 10 puntos, le daría 5 o 6, porque no resulta ser de las mejores películas de terror - que hace tiempo que no sacan una buena de verdad - pero tiene más aciertos que muchas otras que son más sosas y repetitivas; y ustedes ¿ya vieron Longlegs? ¿cuál es su película de terror favorita?
