Director Bong Joon-ho made history a few years ago when he won four Oscars for his film Parasite, including Best Picture and Best Director. From there, everyone began revisiting his previous work (I had seen a couple of them, but then, like everyone else, decided to watch everything he had done) and discovered a great talent, but also a wide range. Science fiction, humor, suspense, monster movies, social commentary, pure thrillers—his stories encompass a wide range of emotions and styles that often blend together.

El director Bong Joon-ho hizo historia hace algunos años cuando se llevó cuatro premios Oscar por su película Parasite, incluyendo Mejor película y Mejor director. A partir de allí todos comenzaron a revisar sus trabajos previos (yo había visto un par de ellos, pero me decidí entonces, igual que el resto, a ver todo lo anterior) y descubrieron un gran talento, pero también un rango amplio. Ciencia ficción, humor, suspenso, cine de monstruos, crítica social, thrillers puros, sus historias abarcan una gran cantidad de emociones y estilos que en la mayoría de las veces se mezclan entre sí.

Taking as a reference their previous films and trying to make some kind of relation with them, as if to prepare you a little bit for what you are going to see, Mickey 17 comes to be a kind of mix between Snowpiercer and Okja. If I say this is so you don't expect something similar to Parasite; this story is different, but that doesn't mean it has less quality. The plot of the film is set in the year 2050. Humanity has managed to master space travel and in that conquering spirit - coupled with the use and abuse of the resources of our planet Earth - has taken on the task of establishing human colonies on other planets and one of them, the planet Niflheim is the goal of a four-year journey in which many people embark, some in the name of adventure and science, others for political or professional reasons, but there are also those who join the mission because they want to escape their fate on Earth. Among them is Mickey Barnes, an impressive Robert Pattinson who, in his haste to flee and without paying too much attention to the conditions of the position he applied for, embarks on the ship as an Expendable. There can only be one Expendable in each colony, so in the whole ship he's the only one in that condition and that position, but what is he? In a few words, he's a human clone. Human replication technology is forbidden on Earth, but it can be used in outer space for scientific purposes; that is, these clones can be used as guinea pigs to do experiments and perform work that would be too risky for a normal person.

Tomando como referencia sus películas previas y tratando de hacer algún tipo de relación con ellas, como para prepararlos un poco para lo que van a ver, Mickey 17 viene a ser una especie de mezcla entre Snowpiercer y Okja. Si digo esto es para que no esperen algo similar a Parasite; esta historia es diferente, pero no por eso tiene menos calidad. La trama de la cinta se sitúa en el año 2050. La humanidad ha logrado dominar los viajes espaciales y en ese espíritu conquistador - unido al uso y abuso de los recursos de nuestro planeta tierra - se ha dado a la tarea de establecer colonias humanas en otros planetas y uno de ellos, el planeta Niflheim es la meta de un viaje de cuatro años en el que se embarca muchas personas, algunos en nombre de la aventura y de la ciencia, otros por cuestiones políticas o profesionales, pero también hay quienes se unen a la misión porque quieren huir de su destino en la tierra. Entre ellos se encuentra Mickey Barnes, un impresionante Robert Pattinson que en la premura de huir y sin prestar demasiada a atención a las condiciones del puesto al que aplicó para el viaje, se embarca en la nave en calidad de Desechable (o Prescindible). Sólo puede haber un Desechable en cada colonia, así que en toda la nave él es el único en esa condición y ese puesto, pero ¿qué es? Palabras más, palabras menos, es un clon humano. Now, it's not that they make many simultaneous copies of Mickey, but every time things go wrong and Mickey dies, his memories are implanted in a new copy that is printed on a machine that is a kind of 3D printer for organic matter. So, each time he's copied, a new Mickey is generated who is simultaneously the same - because he has the memory bank - but only one Mickey can exist at a time. It's kind of like a technological reincarnation. Mickey dies and is copied again, over and over again. At the beginning of the film, he has been copied (and died) sixteen times. Hence the name of the film.

Ahora bien, no es que hagan muchas copias simultáneas de Mickey, sino que en cada oportunidad que las cosas salen mal y Mickey muere, sus recuerdos son implantados en una nueva copia que se imprime en una máquina que viene a ser una especie de impresora 3D de materia orgánica. Entonces, cada vez que es copiado, se genera un nuevo Mickey que a la vez es el mismo - porque tiene el banco de recuerdos - pero sólo puede existir un único Mickey cada vez. Es algo así como una especie de reencarnación tecnológica. Mickey muere y es nuevamente copiado, una y otra vez. Al inicio de la película, lo han copiado (y ha muerto) dieciséis veces. De allí proviene el nombre de la cinta.

A lot of things happen in the 137 minutes of the movie, there's a central plot, conflicts, main and secondary characters, etc., but I don't want to give more details about that so that you can discover it for yourselves - hopefully in a movie theater - and also because I think that what happens is not the most relevant part of the story. If you are one of those who like to watch movies to be entertained and have fun, Mickey 17 may please you because there are action sequences, moments of irony, explosions, some romance, political, social satires and several moments where the actions provoke laughter, thanks to Bong Joon-ho's sense of humor, which we already saw in previous works such as Okja. But underneath that appearance, underneath the things that happen, there are much deeper dramas and themes. For example, despite the fact that every time he dies, Mickey has his memories re-implanted and in theory becomes himself again - because also physically his DNA is 100% cloned - not all Mickeys are the same. Some have been more noble, others more aggressive, etc., and that leads us to ask ourselves, what makes us us? If we could clone ourselves and there were two bodies exactly alike and the memory of the lived experiences of both specimens were exactly the same, where would the difference between the two come from? On the other hand, is a human clone less human than a normal person? In that of using Mickey in the name of science and making it his job to die, isn't there something morally reprehensible? Because yes, okay, he gets imprinted again, but Mickey must face death over and over again.

En los 137 minutos que dura la película pasan un montón de cosas, hay una trama central, conflictos, personajes principales y secundarios, etc, pero no quiero dar más detalles de eso para que lo descubran ustedes mismos - ojalá en una sala de cine - y también porque creo que lo que pasa no es lo más relevante de la historia. Si son de quienes les gusta ver películas para entretenerse y divertirse, Mickey 17 les puede gustar porque hay secuencias de acción, momentos de ironía, explosiones, algo de romance, sátiras políticas, sociales y varios momentos en que las acciones provocan risas, gracias al sentido del humor de Bong Joon-ho, que ya vimos en trabajos previos como Okja. Pero debajo de esa apariencia, debajo de las cosas que suceden, hay dramas y temas mucho más profundos. Por ejemplo, a pesar de que cada vez que muere, a Mickey se le implantan de nuevo sus recuerdos y en teoría vuelve a ser él mismo - porque además físicamente su ADN es clonado 100% - no todos los Mickeys son iguales. Algunos han sido más nobles, otros más agresivos, etc, y eso nos lleva a preguntarnos, ¿qué nos hace ser nosotros? Si pudiéramos clonarnos y existieran dos cuerpos exactamente iguales y la memoria de las experiencias vividas de ambos especímenes fuera exactamente la misma, ¿de dónde saldría esa diferencia entre ambos? Por otro lado, un clon humano, ¿es menos humano que una persona normal? En eso de utilizar a Mickey en nombre de la ciencia y hacer que su trabajo sea morir, ¿no hay algo moralmente condenable? Porque sí, está bien, a él lo vuelven a imprimir, pero Mickey debe enfrentarse a la muerte una y otra vez.

In that sense, Mickey 17 is a very interesting and philosophical film that could be a great conversation starter for an entire afternoon. Beyond the spaceships, the fights, the jokes, and the relationships between the characters, all portrayed with a certain amount of joy and good spirit, there's a dark undercurrent that leads us to question the limits of our identity and our own humanity. And yes, it may not be so obvious to some, but we have to make the effort to be more analytical about the stories we see, and this film is a good way to do that.

En ese sentido, Mickey 17 es una película muy interesante y filosófica sobre la que se puede conversar largo y tendido toda una tarde. Más allá de las naves espaciales, las peleas, los chistes y las relaciones entre los personajes, todo retratado con bastante alegría y buen ánimo, existe un fondo oscuro que nos lleva a cuestionar los límites de nuestra identidad y de nuestra propia humanidad; y sí, quizás no es tan evidente para algunos, pero tenemos que hacer el ejercicio de ser más analíticos con respecto a las historias que vemos y esta película es una buena opción para ejercitar eso.

The film's script, written by the director, is an adaptation of the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, a fact that I was unaware of when I approached the cinema, so we owe him the original idea of the story that, in my opinion, has been portrayed in a good way by the director and by an incredible cast. Robert Pattinson proves once again his acting ability and range not only acting but also physically and vocally. I have seen him in very different stories from each other, embodying very dissimilar characters and mastering different accents, even in the same movie. Yes, teenage girls loved him as Cedric Diggory and Edward Cullen, roles that pigeonholed him as a teen star and bad actor in most people's opinion. But since then Pattinson has given us incredible performances in films like The Lighthouse, The Batman, Tenet, The Devil All the Time and Good Time, just to name a few. His character, Mickey Barnes, joins this motley repertoire and his list of great performances. In addition, alongside Pattinson, the film features Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo and the perhaps lesser known but equally talented Holliday Grainger and Anamaria Vartolomei. There are therefore very good reasons to go to the movies to see this film that has not generated much revenue at the box office, but that does not stop it from being an interesting, funny and thoughtful story about the limits of our humanity and our ambition as a species, how many of you already went to see Mickey 17? what did you think? El guion de la película, escrito por el director, es una adaptación del libro Mickey7 de Edward Ashton, dato que yo desconocía al acercarme al cine, así que a él le debemos la idea original de la historia que, en mi opinión, ha sido retratada de buena forma por el director y por un elenco increíble. Robert Pattinson demuestra una vez su capacidad y rango actoral no sólo en lo interpretativo sino también en lo físico y vocal. Lo he visto en historias muy diferentes entre sí, encarnando personajes muy disímiles y dominando diferentes acentos, incluso en una misma película. Sí, las adolescentes lo amaron como Cedric Diggory y Edward Cullen, papeles que lo encasillaron como una estrella juvenil y mal actor en la opinión de la mayoría. Su personaje, Mickey Barnes, se une a este variopinto repertorio y a su palmarés de grandes actuaciones.
