I've repeatedly mentioned my preference for MUBI over Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and other platforms (I admit Filmin seems interesting, but I haven't used it) mainly due to its curation. It's true that the offering is more limited than the aforementioned services and that MUBI offers very few series (usually miniseries), but how many films do you need to watch in a year? It's better to have 300 good and original alternatives than thousands of dull and repetitive options, don't you think?

That's what happened to me with this greeat film, whose MUBI recommendation reads: ” If The worst person in the world had a younger sister full of tattoos, this would be Ninjababy. ", Do I need to know more? Of course, but do I need more reasons to want to see it? No. The Worst Person in the World is one of the most entertaining, thoughtful and interesting films I've seen in recent years and using it as a reference here sold me. The most direct relation is the fact that both films are Norwegian and both were released in 2021, but besides that they keep similarities in the mix of drama and comedy, fun and reflection on serious issues; and furthermore, both are sustained by an idea that - taking also a title I saw in MUBI - we can define as Millennials in crisis. Ninjababy is directed by Yngvild Sve Flikke and written by Johan Fasting, Yngvild Sve Flikke & Inga Sætre, and tells the story of Rakel (Kristine Kujath Thorp), a young woman in her early twenties, somewhat chaotic and messy - but brimming with energy - who has abandoned her design career - though not her love of drawing - and finds herself a bit adrift in her life and in the apartment she shares with her friend Ingrid.

No. The Worst Person in the World es una de las películas más entretenidas, reflexivas e interesantes que he visto en los últimos años y utilizarla como referencia aquí me convenció. La relación más directa es el hecho de que ambas películas son noruegas y ambas se estrenaron en 2021, pero además de eso guardan semejanzas en la mezcla de drama y comedia, diversión y reflexión sobre temas serios; y además, ambas se sustentan sobre una idea que - tomando también un título que vi en MUBI - podemos definir como Millennials en crisis. Ninjababy está dirigida por Yngvild Sve Flikke y escrita por Johan Fasting, Yngvild Sve Flikke & Inga Sætre, y en ella se cuenta la historia de Rakel (Kristine Kujath Thorp), una joven de veintipocos años algo caótica y desordenada - pero rebosante de energía - que ha abandonado su carrera de diseño - aunque no su afición a dibujar - y se encuentra un poco a la deriva en su vida y en el departamento que comparte con su amiga Ingrid.

Today it's quite normalized and in countries like Norway there are places to have an abortion in a legal, safe and hygienic way. The drama here - or part of it - is that Rakel discovers her pregnancy when it's too far along to be terminated, so any decision she makes has to be based on the idea that she must give birth: whether she wants to or not, Rakel is going to be a mother.

From there, we see Rakel explore ideas, converse with people, receive support from loved ones, and face the most difficult situation she's ever faced, always with her authenticity. Rakel is young, impulsive, creative, sweet, funny, messy, careless, somewhat irresponsible... she's an explosive mix, not devoid of nobility and brimming with charm. In my opinion, Rakel is a very well-constructed character, who feels honest at all times, and who, despite the fact that many people can identify with her dilemmas, struggles, and doubts, also displays originality thanks to different narrative devices, one of which is the most striking: the ninja baby. The film is very clever in introducing, from the beginning, freehand drawings on the screen, scratches, and cross-outs—because of Rakel's vocation—but that idea truly bears its best fruit when Rakel's intrusive thoughts lead her to draw a baby on paper that soon begins to communicate with her. It's about the baby that has slipped into her womb without being noticed, the Ninja Baby of the title, and that makes her reflect on her situation and search for a solution. The Ninja Baby is an expression of Rakel's conscience, who, despite not wanting to be a mother, not wanting to raise her child, does want the creature that will soon come into the world to have a good life and be happy; that is, she's concerned about the baby's fate, although not enough to take care of it herself, and this apparent contradiction - which is not so much so - is at the center of the plot.

A partir de allí vemos a Rakel explorar ideas, conversar con personas, recibir el apoyo de seres queridos y enfrentarse a la situación más difícil que ha tenido en su vida, siempre desde su autenticidad. Rakel es joven, impulsiva, creativa, dulce, divertida, desordenada, descuidada, algo irresponsable... es una mezcla explosiva no exenta de nobleza y rebosante de encanto. En mi opinión, Rakel es un personaje muy bien construido, que se siente honesto en todo momento y que a pesar de que muchas personas se pueden sentir identificadas con sus dilemas, luchas y dudas, también muestra originalidad gracias a diferentes recursos narrativos, uno de los cuales es el más llamativo: el ninjababy. La película es muy inteligente al introducir, desde el inicio, dibujos a mano alzada en la pantalla, rayones, tachaduras - por aquello de la vocación de Rakel - pero esa idea realmente arroja sus mejores frutos cuando los pensamientos intrusivos de Rakel le hacen dibujar sobre el papel un bebé que pronto comienza a comunicarse con ella. Se trata del bebé que se ha colado dentro de su vientre sin hacerse notar, el Ninjababy del título, y que le hace reflexionar sobre su situación y buscar una solución. El ninjababy es una expresión de la consciencia de Rakel que a pesar de no querer ser madre, de no querer criar a su hijo, sí quiere que la criatura que pronto vendrá al mundo tenga una buena vida y sea feliz; es decir, le preocupa el destino del bebé, aunque no lo suficiente como para hacerse cargo ella misma y esta aparente contradicción - que no lo es tanto - está en el centro de la trama.

But while this dilemma is quite dramatic, the script is so well done and the film is so funny that the laughs abound more than the tears - which there are, of course - and I think there will be people who agree with Rakel, others will condemn her and complain about her decisions, but deep down, everyone who sees Ninjababy will end up loving Kristine Kujath Thorp's performance as she embodies a memorable character that elevates this story to a true gem of cinema in recent years and one of the most original and fun comedies I have ever seen and which, due to its quality, won the Best Comedy Award at the European Film Awards (EFA).

Pero si bien ese dilema es bastante dramático, el guion está tan bien hecho y la película resulta tan divertida que las risas abundan más que las lágrimas - que también las hay, por supuesto - y creo que habrá personas que estarán de acuerdo con Rakel, otros la condenarán y le reclamarán sus decisiones, pero en el fondo, todos los que vean Ninjababy terminarán amando la interpretación de Kristine Kujath Thorp al encarnar un personaje memorable que eleva esta historia a una verdadera joya del cine de los últimos años y una de las comedias más originales y divertidas que he visto y que, debido a su calidad, se llevó el Premio a la Mejor Comedia en los Premios del Cine Europeo (EFA).

With incisive humor, quick wit, millennial charm, and disarming honesty, Ninjababy reflects on motherhood, abortion, adoption, the values ​​of modern society, the guilt of the past, anxiety, mental health, the female condition, romantic relationships, casual sex, friendship, the meaning of life, the importance of counting on someone, of feeling loved, the responsibility of one's actions and their consequences, the search for one's place in the world... and much more. Imagine how entertaining and uplifting it can be to laugh for 100 minutes at a comedy with an irreverent protagonist and then reflect on those funny scenes to delve into very relevant and important topics like those mentioned. Cinema is art, and art should make you think, feel, and reflect on the human condition and your own humanity, but that exercise doesn't always have to have the dialectic of a Socratic dialogue. Philosophy and Art can also be a 23-year-old woman talking to the drawing she just made of a ninja baby, the unborn child she is carrying in her womb. After watching Ninjababy, I validate the MUBI team's judgment. It's true: " If The Worst Person in the World had a younger sister covered in tattoos, this would be Ninjababy.
