I've been a fan of Christopher Nolan's work since I saw Memento many years ago and to date I've seen each of his films at least twice (some much more, like Inception, Batman: The Dark Knight and the acclaimed Interstellar) so I was looking forward to the premiere of Oppenheimer, which opens today in Chilean cinemas, but how come I already saw it? I was lucky enough to win an Instagram contest in which the prize was a copy of the book on which the film is based, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and two tickets for the Avant Premiere on July 18th in an IMAX theater and since the film was filmed with that technology I consider that it's the best way to see it: a bigger screen, with a higher resolution (in 4K) for a wonderful experience.

Soy admirador del trabajo de Christopher Nolan desde que vi Memento hace muchos años y a la fecha he visto cada una de sus películas al menos dos veces (algunas mucho más, como Inception, Batman: The Dark Knight y la aclamada Interstellar) así que esperaba con ansias el estreno de Oppenheimer, la cual se estrena hoy en las salas de cine de Chile, pero ¿cómo es que ya la vi? Tuve la fortuna de ganar un concurso de Instagram en el cual el premio era una copia del libro en el que se basa la película, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Sherwin y dos entradas para la Avant Premiere el martes 18 de Julio en una sala IMAX y dado que la película fue filmada con esa tecnología considero que es la mejor manera de verla: una pantalla más grande, con mayor resolución (en 4K) para una experiencia maravillosa.

Oppenheimer is a film about the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the greatest minds of his generation and head of the Manhathan project, tasked with developing and building the atomic bomb. He was known as the American Prometheus because the character from Greek mythology, Prometheus, stole fire from the gods to give it to men; In that analogy, Oppenheimer was the one who delivered atomic power to men. Like the Greek God, in that act the American scientist of Jewish origin also gave men the ability to destroy themselves en masse. Throughout the three hours of the film (which, to tell the truth, go by very quickly) we see what the life of this character was like from his beginnings in the world of physics until after the end of the Second World War: his inclination to theoretical physics, recognition as the most important voice of his generation in the field of science, and then the public condemnation in which some wanted to humiliate him and others to redeem him for what he had done. It's true that he didn't drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's true that he didn't give the order. It's true that by developing and building the bomb along with dozens of other people, Robert was doing his job, following orders that were of national interest, it's true that there was a war and that many times in wars it's about killing or being killed, but is it enough to not feel responsible? Or is his guilt a just though insufficient punishment?

Oppenheimer es una película sobre la vida del físico J. Robert Oppenheimer, una de las mentes más brillantes de su generación y la cabeza del proyecto Manhathan, encargado de desarrollar y construir la bomba atómica. Se le conoció como el Prometeo Americano porque el personaje de la mitología griega, Prometeo, robó el fuego a los dioses para entregarlo a los hombres; en esa analogía, Oppenheimer fue quien entregó el poder atómico a los hombres. Al igual que el Dios griego, en ese acto el científico norteamericano de origen judío entregó también a los hombres la capacidad de destruirse masivamente. A lo largo de las tres horas de duración del film (que a decir verdad se pasan muy rápido) vemos cómo fue la vida de este personaje desde sus inicios en el mundo de la física hasta después de concluida la segunda guerra mundial: su inclinación a la física teórica, el reconocimiento como la voz más importante de su generación en el campo de las ciencias, y luego la condena pública en la que algunos quisieron humillarlo y otros redimirlo por lo que había hecho. Es cierto que él no lanzó las bombas sobre Hiroshima y Nagasaki. Es cierto que él no dio la orden. Es cierto que al desarrollar y construir la bomba junto a otras decenas de personas, Robert cumplía con su trabajo, seguía órdenes que eran de interés nacional, es cierto que había una guerra y que muchas veces en las guerras se trata de matar o ser asesinado, pero ¿es suficiente para no sentirse responsable? ¿o su culpa es un justo aunque insuficiente castigo?

We already know the story (so I won't reveal details in this post) and those who see the film will be able to refresh some things and discover others because, given the importance of the historical moment that is told, we see emblematic characters such as Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Eisenhower, J. Edgar Hoover, among others, whose destinies crossed at some point with that of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

La historia ya la conocemos (así que no revelaré detalles en este post) y quienes vean la película podrán refrescar algunas cosas y descubrir otras porque, dada la importancia del momento histórico que se cuenta, aparecen y son nombrados personajes emblemáticos como Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Eisenhower, J. Edgar Hoover, entre otros, cuyos destinos se cruzaron en algún momento con el de J. Robert Oppenheimer.

As for the film, one of the highlights is the cast: led by Cillian Murphy in a very well executed leading role, the cast also includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman and Casey Affleck, among many others, some of them with very small roles within the story. Although they are all excellent actors and actresses, the performances of Murphy and Downey obviously stand out, they are the ones that have the most time on screen and whose relationship in the story developes little by little.
On the more technical side, the cinematography is amazing, as with every Nolan film. Shooting in IMAX really elevates the movie theater experience and once again Nolan proves that you don't need a lot of CGI to get great shots and special effects. But on top of this, it was quite a challenge to shoot the black and white scenes in such high quality because that technology didn't exist: they had to create it for the film. A pioneer in using IMAX in feature films, Nolan this time outdid himself and went above and beyond others in the field.

En cuanto a la película, uno de los aspectos destacados es el reparto: encabezados por Cillian Murphy en un papel protagónico muy bien ejecutado, el elenco cuenta también con Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman y Casey Affleck, entre muchos otros, algunos de ellos con roles muy pequeños dentro de la historia. Si bien todos son excelentes actores y actrices, destacan obviamente las actuaciones de Murphy y la de Downey, que son quienes tienen más tiempo en pantalla y cuya relación en la historia se va desarrollando poco a poco.
En la parte más técnica, la cinematografía es increíble, como en cada película de Nolan. La filmación en IMAX realmente eleva la experiencia en la sala de cine y una vez más Nolan demuestra que no hace falta ocupar mucho CGI para lograr grandes tomas y efectos especiales. Pero además de esto, fue todo un desafío filmar las escenas en blanco y negro en tan alta calidad porque esa tecnología no existía: tuvieron que crearla para la película. Pionero de usar IMAX en largometrajes, Nolan esta vez se superó a sí mismo y fue más allá que otros en ese campo.

However, I think that the best of Oppenheimer, what makes it perhaps the most important film of the year for me, is the direction and the script, both works by Nolan himself. The story that is told is a story that must be told, that must be known, that must be discussed and reflected on: man discovered in the minuscule smallness of the atom a capacity for massive destruction never seen before. And he used it. If the greatest aspiration of man is creation, what can be said of creations whose only objective is to destroy? Oppenheimer is a drama, but it's also a thriller and a horror movie, not because there are monsters - or rather there are, but they're not creatures alien to ourselves - but because understanding what the bomb atomic energy represented for humanity is a horrifying truth. Almost eighty years have passed since then and it still amazes us, what can be said of those who not only lived through it but also promoted it?

Sin embargo creo que lo mejor de Oppenheimer, lo que la convierte para mí en tal vez la película más importante del año, es la dirección y el guión, ambos trabajos a cargo del propio Nolan. La historia que se cuenta es una historia que debe contarse, que debe saberse, que debe conversarse y reflexionarse: el hombre descubrió en la pequeñez minúscula del átomo una capacidad de destrucción masiva nunca antes vista. Y la utilizó. Si la mayor aspiración del hombre es la creación, ¿qué se puede decir de las creaciones cuyo único objetivo es destruir? Oppenheimer es un drama, pero también es un thriller y una película de terror, no porque hayan monstruos - o más bien sí los hay, pero no son criaturas ajenas a nosotros mismos - sino porque comprender lo que la bomba atómica representó para la humanidad es una verdad espeluznante. Han pasado casi ochenta años desde entonces y aún nos asombra, ¿qué se puede decir de quienes no sólo lo vivieron sino que lo propiciaron?

As always, Nolan's narration is not linear (and I really enjoy that) because he is obsessed with time and although the temporal experiments he presented in Memento or Inception are not included in this plot, the film alternates between different moments of the Oppenheimer's life. It is narrated from a changing present, it goes to the past, it goes ahead to the future, it goes back a little more, and although that makes the narration a little challenging, it also manages to give it rhythm and manages to capture the viewer's attention. Something that you will realize with the first shots, but that I still tell you so that it does not cause confusion, is that the film alternates scenes in full color with scenes in black and white. It is not, as in many cases, the difference between past and future, but a different perspective of the narrator: the color scenes are from the focus of the protagonist, it is how Oppenheimer sees his own story, regardless of whether it is present or past; and the black and white scenes are told by other people, regardless of whether they are from the past or the present.

Como siempre, la narración de Nolan no es lineal (y eso es algo que disfruto mucho) porque es un obseso del tiempo y aunque en esta trama no están los experimentos temporales que presentó en Memento o Inception, la película va alternando diferentes momentos de la vida de Oppenheimer. Se narra desde un presente cambiante, va al pasado, se adelanta al futuro, retrocede un poco más, y aunque eso hace que la narració sea un poco desafiante, también logra imprimirle ritmo y consigue atrapar la atención del espectador. Algo de lo que se darán cuenta con las primeras tomas, pero que aún así les digo para que no les genere confusión, es que la película alterna escenas a full color con escenas en blanco y negro. No se trata, como en muchos casos, de la diferencia entre pasado y futuro, sino de una perspectiva diferente de narrador: las escenas a color son desde el enfoque del protagonista, es como Oppenheimer ve su propia historia, indiferentemente de si es presente o pasado; y las escenas en blanco y negro están contadas por otras personas, sin importar si se trata del pasado o del presente.

I haven't read the book yet (I got it a couple of days ago and it's over 700 pages), but I want to do it to judge the adaptation to the screen and think about a possible nomination for important awards - which surely there will be - in that category. It is true that I have been a fan of Christopher Nolan for a long time, but it is not subjectivity that makes me affirm that this is one of his best films and that it will be seen, with time, that Oppenheimer is one of the most important films in the history of cinema because it is not only about one of the most important episodes of our past as a species, but it is also very relevant: our present - in many aspects - is not so different. And that is something that can be alarming and overwhelming. So if you have the opportunity, don't hesitate to go see it (better if it's in IMAX) because it's quite an experience, how many of you already want to see it? Aún no me leo el libro (lo tengo hace un par de días y son más de 700 páginas), pero quiero hacerlo para juzgar la adaptación a la pantalla y pensar en una posible nominación a premios importantes - que de seguro las habrá - en esa categoría. Es cierto que soy admirador de Christopher Nolan hace mucho tiempo, pero no es la subjetividad lo que me hace afirmar que esta es una de sus mejores películas y que se verá, con el tiempo, que Oppenheimer es una de las películas más importantes de la historia del cine porque no se trata sólo de uno de los episodios más importantes de nuestro pasado como especie, sino que también tiene mucha vigencia: nuestro presente - en muchos aspectos - no es tan diferente. Y eso es algo que puede resultar alarmante y abrumador.
