I've had a lot of work in recent weeks - that's why I've been a little absent from the platform - but my first day off has coincided with the announcement by the Academy of the nominees for the next Oscars (the most important gala in the world of cinematographic arts) and I couldn't have found a better reason to share with you some impressions about this list.

He tenido mucho trabajo en las últimas semanas - por eso he estado un poco ausente de la plataforma - pero justo mi primer día libre ha coincidido con el anuncio por parte de la Academia de los nominados a los próximos premios Oscars (la gala más importante en el mundo de las artes cinematográficas) y no podría haber encontrado mejor motivo para compartir con ustedes algunas impresiones sobre esta lista.

I still haven't seen all the films that we already know are competing for awards, so this post is more oriented towards my first impressions than my favorites as such. As time goes by, I watch the movies I'm missing and obviously before the ceremony scheduled for next March 10th, I will make my personal list of choices. The nominations and awards given at the ceremony are many and although only a little more than twenty categories are announced at the gala, there are still many to make such a detailed list; That's why I'm going to focus on the main categories. Documentary Feature Film, International Feature Film, Animated Short Film, Short Film and Documentary Short Film are categories in which I never manage to get access to see all the nominated material, so I won't talk about them. As for the rest of the categories, it should be noted that the most nominated films of the night are Oppenheimer (13 nominations), Poor Things (11 nominations) and Killer of the Flower Moon (10 nominations), closely followed by Barbie (8) and Maestro (7). Then there are several with 5 nominations among which the most surprising is the French Anatomy of a Fall (film, direction, script, actress, editing), one of the best films of the year, the winner in Cannes that the French Academy did not want to send to the Oscars as its representative, how could they have made such a decision? It's a shame, because that Oscar for Best International Film would have been a no-brainer.

Aún no veo todas las películas que ya sabemos que compiten por los galardones, por lo que este post va más orientado a mis primeras impresiones que a mis favoritos como tal. Conforme vaya pasando el tiempo, vaya viendo las películas que me faltan y obviamente antes de la ceremonia pautada para el próximo 10 de marzo, haré mi listado personal de elecciones. Las nominaciones y premios entregados en la ceremonia son muchos y aunque en la gala se anuncian solamente un poco más de veinte categorías, siguen siendo muchas para hacer un listado tan detallado; por eso voy a concentrarme en las categorías principales. Largometraje documental, Largometraje internacional, Cortometraje animado, Cortometraje y Cortometraje documental son categorías en las que nunca logro conseguir acceso a ver todo el material nominado, así que no hablaré de ellas. En cuanto al resto de las categorías, hay que destacar que las películas más nominadas de la noche son Oppenheimer (13 nominaciones), Poor Things (11 nominaciones) y Killer of th Flower Moon (10 nominaciones), seguidas muy de cerca por Barbie (8) y Maestro (7). Luego hay varias con 5 nominaciones dentro de las cuales la que más sorprende es la francesa Anatomy of a Fall (película, dirección, guión, actriz, montaje), una de las mejores películas del año, la ganadora en Cannes que la Academia Francesa no quiso enviar a los Oscars como su representante, ¿cómo pudieron haber tomado semejante decisión? Es una pena, porque ese Oscar en Mejor Película Internacional habría estado cantado.

The fight for visual elements includes Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One and The Creator (I think they are the favorites), among others and in Best Sound they are joined by Oppenheimer, a film that did a phenomenal job in that aspect. The soundtrack will be disputed between Nolan's biopic and Scorsese's gem that has one of the best soundtracks of the year, without a doubt, and the winning song will come from Barbie: will it be What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish as at the Golden Globes or I'm just Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, as at the Critics Choice Awards?

La lucha por los elementos visuales incluye a Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One y The Creator (creo que son los favoritos), entre otros y en Mejor Sonido se une a ellas Oppenheimer, película que hizo un trabajo fenomenal en ese aspecto. La banda sonora se disputará entre la biopic de Nolan y la joya de Scorsese que tiene uno de los mejores soundtracks del año, sin duda alguna, y la canción triunfadora saldrá de Barbie: ¿será What Was I Made For? de Billie Eilish como en los Golden Globes o I'm just Ken, interpretada por Ryan Gosling, como en los Critics Choice Awards?

Regarding scripts, remember that there are two categories: Best Original Screenplay (a new story) and Best Adapted Screenplay (based on another previously published work; book, film, play, etc.). In the first category compete The Holdovers, May December, Maestro, the beautiful Past Lives and the wonderful Anatomy of a Fall, written with surgical precision; while in the second there are three films based on novels, Poor Things, American Fiction and The Zone of Interest and two adaptations, that of Oppenheimer from the book by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and that of Greta Gerwig with Noah Baumbach which - according to the Academy's criteria - competes in this category because the original script is based on the existence of the famous Mattel doll. That doesn't seem very convincing to me, but what surprises me most is not seeing Killers of the Flower Moon (KOTFM) in this category, a gem that could represent another "failure" when it comes to collecting awards for Scorsese, who already knows what which is having ten nominations and not winning any category. For Best Editing, the nominees are the main ones of the night, as well as for photography, where the Chilean film El Conde is surprising, one of the two films from the southern country nominated for the night, the other being Maite Alberti's documentary, La memoria infinita.

En cuanto a los guiones, recordemos que existen dos categorías: Mejor Guión Original (una historia nueva) y Mejor Guión Adaptado (basado en otra obra previamente publicada; libro, película, obra de teatro, etc). En la primera categoría compiten The Holdovers, May December, Maestro, la hermosísima Past Lives y la maravillosa Anatomy of a Fall, escrita con presición quirúrgica; mientras que en la segunda hay tres películas basadas en novelas, Poor Things, American Fiction y The Zone of Interest y dos adaptaciones, la de Oppenheimer a partir del libro de Kai Bird y Martin J. Sherwin y la de Greta Gerwig junto a Noah Baumbach que - de acuerdo a los criterios de la Academia - compite en esta categoría porque el guión original está basado en la existencia de la famosa muñeca de Mattel. No me parece muy convincente eso, pero lo que más me sorprende es no ver en esta categoría a Killers of the Flower Moon (KOTFM), joya que pudiera representar otro "fracaso" a la hora de recolectar premios para Scorsese, quien ya sabe lo que es tener diez nominaciones y no ganar niguna categoría. Para Mejor Montaje las nominadas son las principales de la noche, igual que para la fotografía, en donde sorprende la cinta chilena El Conde, una de las dos películas del país austral nominadas para la noche, siendo la otra el documental de Maite Alberti, La memoria infinita.

The acting categories are very, very close. The nominated supporting actors and actresses have done a great job and although everything seems to indicate that the names that triumphed at the Golden Globes will be repeated, there could be surprises. And among the main actors and actresses, we have Annette Bening (Nyad), Carey Mulligan (one of my favorite actresses who acted in Maestro) Lily Gladstone (KOTFM) and Emma Stone (Poor Things), winners of the Golden Globe in their categories (Drama and Comedy/Musical) and finally Sandra Hüller's majestic performance in Anatomy of a Fall, who of these last three will take the award? In Best International Film, one of my all-time favorite categories, my mind is blank. If France had sent Anatomy of a Fall as its representative to the Academy there would have been nothing to talk about: it won by far. But the bad decision of the French has opened the way for The Snow Society, which looks great and has received wonderful reviews around the world, making it one of the favorites, along with Perfect Days by Wim Wenders, Io Capitano, The Zone of Interest and the German Das Lehrerzimmer, why isn't Past Lives nominated? Because the film was made and produced in the US, so it cannot compete in this category, but it is included - and this is no small matter - in the award of the night: Best Film, where it must be measured in nothing more and nothing less that American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, KOTFM, Maestro, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest and the historical Oppenheimer are nominated!

And then, after so much controversy in previous years, and having belittled his work, will the Academy finally redeem itself and surrender at the feet of Christpher Nolan to give him the award for Best Director? He competes with Martin Scorsese, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jonathan Glazer and Justine Triet; many disagree with this category for not having included Greta Gerwig and Celine Song, do you think they should have been included?

En Mejor Película Internacional, una de mis categorías favoritas de siempre, mi mente está en blanco. Si Francia hubiera enviado Anatomy of a Fall como su representante ante la Academia no hubiera habido nada que hablar: ganaba y por lejos. Pero la mala decisión de los franceses le ha abierto el camino La sociedad de la nieve, que se ve buenísima y ha recogido maravillosas críticas alrededor del mundo convirtiéndola en una de las favoritas, junto a Perfect Days de Wim Wenders, Io Capitano, The Zone of Interest y la alemana Das Lehrerzimmer, ¿por qué no está nominada Past Lives? Porque la película fue realizada y producida en los EEUU, así que no puede competir en esta categoría, pero sí está incluida - y esto no es menor - en el premio de la noche: Mejor Película, en donde deberá medirse nada más y nada menos que a American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, KOTFM, Maestro, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest y la histórica Oppenheimer ¡vaya nominados!

Y luego, después de tanta polémica en años anteriores, y de haber menospreciado su trabajo, ¿la Academia por fin se redimirá y se rendirá a los pies de Christpher Nolan para darle el galardón a Mejor Director?
