Having reviewed the other categories, I have left for this third post what most consider the six most important awards: Best Actor and Best Actress (both main and supporting), Best Director and the central award, the one that always closes the gala, the greatest recognition: Best Picture, who are the nominees and the favorites for these categories?

Margaret Qualley

The categories of Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor seem to be defined because there has been unanimity in previous awards shows. I insert here a small complaint: why didn't they nominate Margaret Qualley, Sue from The Substance? in my opinion, she deserved it. But well, the actresses who are nominated for a supporting role are: Monica Barbaro for her great performance as Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, especially in the passages where she interacts with Bob Dylan and when she performs songs on stage; Isabella Rossellini's for Conclave was brief, but telling. There will be those who think she doesn't get out enough to win, but we can cite Anne Hathaway's 15 minutes in Lés Miserables as an example. Felicity Jones did amazing in The Brutalist, both emotionally and acting-wise and would be my favorite - of the nominees - were it not for what Ariana Grande did in Wicked as Glinda which I thought was a great performance (I think it's harder to get nominated with a comedy role), she danced, sang, made us laugh, redeemed herself (half-heartedly) and gave a great performance; But the one who has swept all the awards has been Zoe Saldana for her role in Emilia Perez and most likely she will also win the Oscar. As will surely go to Kieran Culkin for what he did in A Real Pain as Benji, one of the most endearing and touching characters I've ever seen on film. I didn't see Jeremy Strong, his Succession co-star, in The Apprentice and while I loved Yuriy Borisov's in Anora, Edward Norton's in the Bob Dylan biopic and even more Guy Pearce's in The Brutalist, but I still think the Oscar is Culkin's.

Las categorías de Mejor Actriz de Reparto y Mejor Actor de Reparto parecerían estar definidas porque ha habido unanimidad en las entregas de premios anteriores. Inserto acá un pequeño reclamo: ¿por qué no nominaron a Margaret Qualley, la Sue de The Substance? en mi opinión, lo merecía. Pero bueno, las actrices que sí están nominadas por un rol de soporte son: Monica Barbaro por su gran interpretación como Joan Báez en A Complete Unknown, especialmente en los pasajes en los que interactúa con Bob Dylan y cuando interpreta canciones sobre el escenario; lo de Isabella Rossellini para Conclave fue breve, pero contundente. Habrá quienes piensen que no sale lo suficiente como para ganar, pero podemos citar como ejemplo los 15 minutos de Anne Hathaway en Lés Miserables. Felicity Jones lo hizo increíble en The Brutalist, tanto a nivel emocional como interpretativo y sería mi favorita - de las nominadas - de no ser por lo que hizo Ariana Grande en Wicked como Glinda que me pareció una gran interpretación (creo que es más difícil ser nominado con un papel de comedia), bailó, cantó, nos hizo reír, se redimió (a medias) y dejó una gran actuación; pero la que ha arrasado en todas las premiaciones ha sido Zoe Saldana por su papel en Emilia Pérez y lo más seguro es que se lleve también el Oscar. Como también se lo llevará seguramente Kieran Culkin por lo que hizo en A Real Pain como Benji, uno de los personajes más entrañables y emotivos que he visto en el cine. No vi a Jeremy Strong, su compañero de Succession, en The Apprentice y aunque me encantó lo de Yuriy Borisov en Anora, lo de Edward Norton en la biopic de Bob Dylan y aún más lo de Guy Pearce en The Brutalist, pero sigo pensando que el Oscar es de Culkin.

As for Best Actor in a Leading Role category, I didn't see Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) but I don't think he'll win it. I liked Ralph Fiennes in Conclave and even more Colman Domingo in Sing Sing (I wish he won!), but that award will remain in the hands of Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) who has already won other awards or - what would be a big surprise - Timothée Chalamet who already won the SAG for his role as a young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, a review that I have yet to upload, but in the that I will highlight Chalamet's performance, especially when singing the iconic songs of the Folk icon.

En cuanto a la categoría de Mejor Actor en un papel principal, no vi a Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) pero no creo que lo gane. Me gustó lo de Ralph Fiennes en Conclave y aún más lo de Colman Domingo en Sing Sing (¡ojalá ganase él!), pero ese premio se quedará en las manos de Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) que ya ganó otros premios o - lo que sería una gran sorpresa - en las de Timothée Chalamet que ya se llevó el SAG por su papel como un joven Bob Dylan en A Complete Unknown, una reseña que tengo pendiente de subir, pero en la que destacaré la actuación de Chalamet, especialmente a la hora de cantar las icónicas canciones del ícono del Folk norteamericano.

Demi Moore

Now, in the category of Best Actress my heart is divided in multiple parts. In my opinion, Karla Sofia Gascon is the weakest candidate for this award and I think she's already making history with her nomination because Nicole Kidman for Babygirl and Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door should have been in this category; so to have made it to this list of five is already a triumph for Gascon. From there on it seems super complicated to me. Cynthia Erivo dazzled me as Elphaba in Wicked. I've always thought that playing a role in a musical is a bit more difficult because you have to act, convey emotions, dance, sing... it's a demonstration of enormous talent and that's what Erivo does on this film. On the other side of the spectrum, in a dramatic story, Fernanda Torres as Eunice Paiva in Ainda Estou Aqui, has also left us a performance of anthology, very strong and emotionally charged. She comes to be, this year, what Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) was in last year's awards. But the biggest doubt in my heart is this: who to choose between Mikey Madison and Demi Moore? What weighs more: Moore's experience and commitment in a difficult role that could close a great career with an Oscar, or Ani's freshness and irreverence, her wildness and her way of relating to the world through violence? It has been more than ten years since a twenty-something Jennifer Lawrence took the golden statuette and since then the Academy has preferred more experienced actresses like Frances McDormand, Michelle Yeoh and Olivia Colman, will there be a change this year in favor of Mikey Madison?

Ahora bien, en la categoría de Mejor Actriz tengo el corazón dividido en múltiples partes. En mi opinión, Karla Sofía Gascón es la candidata más débil a este premio y creo que ya con la nominación está haciendo historia porque en esta categoría debieron estar Nicole Kidman por Babygirl y Tilda Swinton por The Room Next Door; entonces haber llegado a esta lista de cinco ya es un triunfo para Gascón. De ahí en adelante me parece super complicado. Cynthia Erivo me deslumbró como Elphaba en Wicked. Siempre he pensado que interpretar un papel en un musical es un poco más difícil porque hay que actuar, transmitir emociones, bailar, cantar... es una demostración de un enorme talento y eso hace Erivo en esta cinta. Del otro lado del espectro, en una historia dramática, Fernanda Torres como Eunice Paiva en Ainda Estou Aqui, también nos ha dejado una interpretación de antología, de mucha fuerza y carga emocional. Viene a ser, este año, lo que fue Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) en la premiación del año pasado. Pero la mayor duda de mi corazón viene a ser esta: ¿a quién escoger entre Mikey Madison y Demi Moore? ¿qué pesa más? ¿la experiencia y entrega de Moore en un papel difícil que podría cerrar una gran trayectoria con un Oscar? ¿o la frescura e irreverencia de Ani, su salvajismo y manera de relacionarse con el mundo a través de la violencia? Hace más de diez años que una Jennifer Lawrence de veintipocos años se llevó la estatuilla dorada y desde entonces la Academia ha preferido a las actrices más experimentadas como Frances McDormand, Michelle Yeoh y Olivia Colman, ¿habrá un cambio este año en favor de Mikey Madison?

It goes without saying, but the films directed by the five nominated directors competing in the main category were very well directed. You can criticize Emilia Perez all you want, but you have to recognize that Jacques Audiard's directing work was very good, as was James Mangold's for A Complete Unknown which is not his best film because he also made Walk the Line and - my favorite in his filmography - Ford vs. Ferrari, but it was certainly one of the best of the season. Of the other three nominees, I don't care who wins. I mean, I'd be happy for any of them. Coralie Fargeat's is definitely the long shot and I'd love to see her take the Oscar, for being a woman, for being The Substance a repulsive yet appealing body horror film, and for having conquered Hollywood with a different approach. And between Sean Baker (Anora) and Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), I think I'm leaning slightly in Baker's favor, but I think between them it's down to these last two categories, both Best Director and Best Picture. Because, let's see, we already know that they won't give this Oscar to Dune: Part Two, nor to Nickel Boys (which only has one other nomination) and although I'd like to see them give it to the Brazilian Ainda Estou Aqui, I see it very difficult. I would also rule out, judging by the other awards, both Wicked (which didn't even win Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes) and Emilia Perez, not only because of the controversy that has arisen around it but also because of the weight of the other nominees.

Coralie Fargeat

Está de más decirlo, pero las películas dirigidas por los cinco directores nominados que compiten en la categoría principal fueron muy bien dirigidas. Se puede criticar todo lo que se quiera Emilia Pérez, pero hay que reconocer que el trabajo de dirección de Jacques Audiard estuvo muy bueno, como también el de James Mangold para A Complete Unknown que no es su mejor película porque también hizo Walk the Line y - mi favorita en su filmografía - Ford vs. Ferrari, pero que sin duda ha sido de lo mejor de la temporada. De los otros tres nominados, no me importa quien gane. Es decir, estaría contento por cualquiera de ellos. Lo de Coralie Fargeat es sin duda la apuesta más arriesgada y me encantaría que se llevara el Oscar, por ser mujer, por ser The Substance una película de terror corporal repulsiva y atrayente a la vez y por haber conquistado Hollywood con una propuesta diferente. Y entre Sean Baker (Anora) y Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), creo que me inclino ligeramente a favor de Baker, pero creo que entre ellos se quedan estas dos últimas dos categorías, tanto la de Mejor Director como la de Mejor Película. Porque, a ver, ya sabemos que no le darán este Oscar a Dune: Part Two, ni a Nickel Boys (que sólo tiene otra nominación) y aunque me gustaría que se lo dieran a la brasilera Ainda Estou Aqui, lo veo muy difícil. Yo descartaría también, a juzgar por las demás premiaciones, tanto a Wicked (que ni siquiera ganó el premio de Mejor Película de Comedia o Musical en los Golden Globes) como a Emilia Pérez, no solo por la polémica que ha surgido alrededor suyo sino también por el peso de las demás candidatas.

Of the remaining five, I dare to also discard A Complete Unknown, which I liked quite a bit and I understand the amount of nominations, but I don't think it's the best film of the year and The Substance because I doubt the Academy will give this award to a horror film (it almost never has), especially having the excuse of giving it to some of the remaining three: The Brutalist which took the Golden Globe, Anora which took the Critics Choice Award and Conclave which without making much noise took the BAFTA and SAG and could take the Oscar to everyone's surprise and delight which one do you think will be the winner of the night's award? which one is your favorite? De las cinco restantes, me atrevo a descartar también A Complete Unknown, que me gustó bastante y que entiendo la cantidad de nominaciones, pero que no creo que sea la mejor película del año y a The Substance porque dudo que la Academia le otorgue este premio a una película de terror (casi nunca lo ha hecho), sobre todo teniendo la excusa de entregarlo a algunas de las tres restantes: The Brutalist que se llevó el Golden Globe, Anora que se llevó el Critics Choice Award y Conclave que sin hacer mucho ruido se llevó el BAFTA y el SAG y podría llevarse el Oscar para sorpresa y agrado de todos ¿cuál creen que será la ganadora del premio de la noche? ¿cuál es su favorita?
