Sometimes we find a film and watch it immediately (it usually happens to me with titles that are on the cinema listings), but more commonly - at least in my case - we see a poster or a review and put it on our endless list of films to see and then, months or years later, almost by chance, the title comes back onto our radar and then, like someone paying off an old debt, we get ready to watch it without understanding why it took us so long to get to know it, regretting a little the delay.

Algunas veces encontramos una película y la vemos inmediatamente (a mí me pasa normalmente con los títulos que están en la cartelera del cine), pero lo más común - al menos en mi caso - es que veamos un poster o una reseña y lo pongamos en nuestra interminable lista de films por ver y luego, meses o años más tarde, casi por azar, el título vuelve a nuestro radar y entonces sí, como quien paga una deuda antigua, nos disponemos a verla sin entender por qué nos tomó tanto tiempo conocerla, arrepintiéndonos un poco por la demora.

Something like that just happened to me with this story. My first contact with The Hours goes back some ten or twelve years when I bought Michael Cunningham's novel. However, I never read the book and remember giving it away. Years later I saw a new edition at Editorial TusQuets and wanted to buy it, but I didn't and the movie was always relegated to watching it after reading the book. But yesterday, thanks to a film series in the city where I live, I was able to see the film and I wondered why it took me so long to see it? We are talking about a film starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman, who are supported by a no less important cast such as Ed Harris, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Miranda Richardson and Claire Danes; directed by Stephen Daldry, the man behind Billy Elliot and The Reader, with screenplay by David Hare (who also adapted The Reader), based on the 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Michael Cunningham. And as if all this were not enough merits, the story revolves around one of the most remembered works of one of the greatest writers of world literature: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. With that foundation, that talent behind the scenes, that cast and that trio of actresses at the forefront, how is it possible that I have not seen this film before knowing that it was released more than twenty years ago? It's a doubt that will haunt me forever, especially since after watching it I found it to be one of the best films I've seen in recent months both acting-wise and technically. But what is The Hours about? I'll tell you right away.

Algo así me acaba de ocurrir con esta historia. Mi primer contacto con The Hours se remonta a unos diez o doce años atrás cuando compré la novela de Michael Cunningham. Sin embargo, nunca leí el libro y recuerdo que lo regalé. Años más tarde vi una edición nueva en Editorial TusQuets y la quise comprar, pero no lo hice y la película siempre quedó relegada para verla después de leer el libro. Pero ayer, gracias a un ciclo de cine en la ciudad en la que vivo, pude acercarme a conocer la versión cinematográfica de esta cinta y me pregunté ¿por qué me demoré tanto en verla? Estamos hablando de una película protagonizada por Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore y Nicole Kidman, quienes se apoyan en un reparto no menos importante como lo son Ed Harris, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Miranda Richardson y Claire Danes; con la dirección de Stephen Daldry, el hombre detrás de Billy Elliot y The Reader, con guion de David Hare (quien también adaptó The Reader), basado en la novela de Michael Cunningham ganadora del Premio Pulitzer en 1999. Y como si todo esto no fueran méritos suficientes, la historia gira alrededor de una de las obras más recordadas de una de las más grandes escritoras de la literatura universal: Mrs. Dalloway de Virginia Woolf. Con esa base, ese talento detrás de cámaras, ese reparto y ese trío de actrices en la primera línea, ¿cómo es posible que no haya visto esta película antes sabiendo que se estrenó hace más de veinte años? Es una duda que me perseguirá siempre, especialmente porque después de verla me pareció una de las mejores películas que he visto en los últimos meses tanto a nivel interpretativo como a nivel técnico. Pero, ¿de qué se trata The Hours? Ya les cuento.

It's basically a film of intersecting stories, with the added bonus that the stories take place in three different eras. First, we see the English writer Virginia Woolf, an unrecognizable Nicole Kidman with a prosthetic nose, living on the outskirts of London with her husband Leonard, struggling to maintain her sanity while attempting to write a landmark novel: Mrs. Dalloway. On the other hand, we have Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), a married woman with one child and pregnant with a second, living in Los Angeles in the early 1950s who, in the midst of a personal crisis, is reading the aforementioned Virginia Woolf novel.

Básicamente se trata de una película de historias cruzadas, con el agregado de que las historias transcurren en tres épocas diferentes. Primero vemos a la escritora inglesa Virginia Woolf, una Nicole Kidman irreconocible con una prótesis en su nariz, quien vive en las afueras de Londres con su esposo Leonard e intenta luchar por conservar su salud mental mientras intenta escribir una novela que pasará a la historia: Mrs. Dalloway. Por otro lado, tenemos a Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), una mujer casada, con un hijo y embarazada de un segundo, que vive en Los Ángeles a principios de los años cincuenta y que, en medio de una crisis personal, está leyendo precisamente la novela mencionada de Virginia Woolf.

And finally, in the New York of the new millennium, we see Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep), a successful publisher who lives with her partner Sally (Janney) and who embodies a modern-day version of Mrs. Dalloway, as she prepares a party to honor her friend Richard (Ed Harris) who has just received a prestigious poetry award. The stories of the three women are related beyond the connection to Virginia's novel and it's very interesting the way the director shows us the parallels in the stories and the social context of the central themes in each place and time. All four protagonists - if we add Woolf's character in the novel - are women trying to find meaning in their lives beyond what others think is best for them, but the parallels are not always so obvious between these women, but sometimes the similarities are more subtly present or connected to other characters. Through the three narratives, the film explores themes such as the feminine condition, homosexuality, social criticism, suicide, mental and physical health, love, nostalgia, the search for self-realization, the passage and weight of time, motherhood, apathy, emptiness, literary creation and the fragility that often hides behind a busy schedule and a cheerful face, among many other equally interesting ones. It is a dramatic film, yes, with few truly joyful moments, but it keeps you attentive at all times both for the actions that happen and for the themes it covers through all the characters.

Y finalmente, en la Nueva York del nuevo milenio, vemos a Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep), una exitosa editora que vive con su pareja Sally (Janney) y que encarna una versión actual de la Sra. Dalloway, pues prepara una fiesta para homenajear a su amigo Richard (Ed Harris) quien acaba de recibir un prestigioso premio de poesía. Las historias de las tres mujeres están relacionadas más allá de la conexión con la novela de Virginia y es muy interesante la forma en que el director nos va mostrando los paralelismos en las historias y el contexto social de los temas centrales en cada lugar y época. Las cuatro protagonistas - si sumamos al personaje de Woolf en la novela - son mujeres que intentan buscarle un sentido a su vida más allá de lo que los demás piensan que es lo más adecuado para ellas, pero los paralelismos no siempre son tan obvios entre estas mujeres, sino que a veces las semejanzas están presentes con mayor sutileza o se conectan con otros personajes. A través de las tres narraciones, la película explora temas como la condición femenina, la homosexualidad, la crítica social, el suicidio, la salud mental y física, el amor, la nostalgia, la búsqueda de la autorrealización, el paso y el peso del tiempo, la maternidad, la apatía, el vacío, la creación literaria y la fragilidad que muchas veces se esconde detrás de una agenda ocupada y un rostro alegre, entre muchos otros igualmente interesantes. Es una película dramática, sí, con pocos momentos realmente alegres, pero te mantiene atento en todo momento tanto por las acciones que suceden como por las temáticas que abarca a través de todos los personajes.

The Hours earned nine Oscar nominations for Best Editing, Costume Design, Score, Screenplay, Director, and Film, and several acting nominations; seven Golden Globe nominations, where it took home the statuette for Best Picture - Drama; eleven BAFTA nominations, and four SAG nominations; it is, without a doubt, a great film from a technical standpoint, but the best thing about this adaptation of Cunningham's work is the performances, especially those of the three leads, not only for the characters but above all for the acting quality and the professional moment each one was in.

The Hours obtuvo nueve nominaciones a los premios Oscar: montaje, vestuario, banda sonora, guion, director, película y varias nominaciones por las actuaciones; siete nominaciones a los Globos de Oro en donde se llevó la estatuilla a Mejor Película - Drama; once nominaciones a los BAFTA y cuatro a los SAG; es, sin duda, una gran película desde lo técnico, pero lo mejor de esta adaptación de la obra de Cunningham son las actuaciones, especialmente las de las tres protagonistas, no sólo por los personajes, sino sobre todo por la calidad actoral y el momento profesional en que se encontraba cada una.

Nicole Kidman had just finished making Eyes Wide Shut, The Others, and Moulin Rouge! (for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress the previous year), and her portrayal of Virginia Woolf earned her the Oscar and the Golden Globe, categories in which she beat out her co-star Julianne Moore, who was nominated in the leading category for her role in Far From Heaven and in the supporting actress category for her portrayal of Laura Brown in The Hours. In the latter category, Moore competed with her other co-star, Meryl Streep, for what she did in Adaptation. It was one of the best years in the careers of three of the best actresses in history - who have remained to this day - and who are benchmarks of quality. In addition, they were supported by an incredible cast (Ed Harris was also nominated for an Oscar), a solid script, and a novel that, although I haven't read it, I will put on my list along with the original story, Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. It's true that the novelist, screenwriter, and director of this story are men, but the protagonists are women, so I think it's an excellent recommendation for this month of March, because The Hours makes us reflect a lot on what it means to be a woman and what it has meant throughout history. Virginia (the one in the film), Laura, and Clarissa are characters who, while they respond to a fictional time period, are relevant in today's reality. How many of you have seen this film? Nicole Kidman venía de hacer Eyes Wide Shut, The Others y Moulin Rouge! (con la que fue nominada al Oscar a Mejor Actriz el año anterior) y su interpretación de Virginia Woolf le valió el Oscar y el Golden Globe, categorías en donde superó a su coestrella Julianne Moore, nominada a la categoría principal por su papel en Far From Heaven y como actriz de reparto por su interpretación de Laura Brown en The Hours. En esta última categoría Moore rivalizó con su otra coestrella, Meryl Streep, pero por lo que esta hizo en Adaptation. Fue uno de los mejores años en las carreras de tres de las mejores actrices de la historia - que se han mantenido hasta hoy - y que son referentes de calidad. Además, se apoyaron en un reparto increíble (Ed Harris también fue nominado al Oscar) un guion sólido y una novela que aunque no he leído la pondré en mi lista junto a la historia original, la Mrs. Dalloway de Virginia Woolf. Es cierto que el novelista, el guionista y el director de esta historia son hombres, pero las protagonistas son las mujeres, así que me parece una excelente recomendación para este mes de marzo, porque The Hours nos hace reflexionar mucho sobre lo que significa ser mujer y sobre lo que ha significado a lo largo de la historia. Virginia (la de la película), Laura y Clarissa son personajes que, si bien responden a un contexto temporal de ficción, tienen vigencia en la realidad de hoy, ¿cuántos de ustedes han visto esta película? ¿qué les pareció?
