The Disney Pixar collaboration is undoubtedly the most successful when it comes to animated films. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., WALL-E, Up, Coco, Soul, are stories that have shined - some more, others less - at the box office, but above all they have won important awards and have managed to hold on to the collective memory of people transforming their characters into part of pop culture. That's why they are always favorites to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, where they will surely nominate their latest production, Inside Out 2, but this year at least one worthy rival has emerged.

La colaboración Disney Pixar es sin duda la más exitosa en lo que se refiere al cine de animación. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., WALL-E, Up, Coco, Soul, son historias que han brillado - unas más, otras menos - en la taquilla, pero sobre todo han conseguido premios importantes y han logrado aferrarse a la memoria colectiva de las personas transformando sus personajes en parte de la cultura pop. Por eso siempre son favoritos a llevarse el Oscar a Mejor Largometraje de Animación, en donde seguramente nominarán a su última producción, Inside Out 2, pero este año les ha surgido al menos un rival digno.

Dreamworks has also managed to create great stories, like Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and Megamind, but you have to accept it, they have always been behind Pixar. However, this year, the studio whose first computerized feature film was Antz has managed to produce and release an endearing, beautiful film, with a great message (and many other messages derived from it) and with a well-made aesthetic. This is The Wild Robot, written and directed by Chris Sanders from a series of books of the same name by author Peter Brown. In it we are told the story of Rozzum 7134 (who we will call Roz), a robot that begins the film as part of the remains of a shipwreck that the waves bring to the shore of an uninhabited island. Or well, not inhabited by humans, but by diverse wildlife. Different animal species, antelopes, predators, birds, rodents, mammals, inhabit the island and some of these animals, attracted by the remains that reach the shore, activate Roz who begins to function somewhat disoriented. It turns out that the company that created Roz has designed and manufactured a series of robots to make the lives of humans easier and has entrusted them with the simple and extensive task of helping human beings in any task that is required of them. But therein lies Roz's first problem: on an island where there are no human beings and therefore no one who can assign her a task to accomplish, what's the point of her staying?

Dreamworks también ha logrado crear grandes historias, como Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda y Megamind, pero hay que aceptarlo, han ido siempre por detrás de Pixar. Sin embargo, este año, el estudio cuyo primer largometraje computarizado fue Antz ha logrado producir y estrenar una película entrañable, bonita, con un gran mensaje (y muchos otros mensajes derivados de este) y con una estética bien lograda. Se trata de The Wild Robot, escrita y dirigida por Chris Sanders a partir de una serie de libros del mismo nombre del autor Peter Brown. En ella se nos cuenta la historia de Rozzum 7134 (a quien llamaremos Roz), un robot que inicia la película como parte de los restos de un naugrafio que las olas llevan a la orilla de una isla deshabitada. O bueno, no habitada por seres humanos, pero sí por una diversa vida salvaje. Diferentes especies animales, antílopes, depredadores, aves, roedores, mamíferos, habitan la isla y algunos de estos animales, atraídos por los restos que llegan a la orilla, activan a Roz que comienza a funcionar algo desorientada. Resulta que la compañía creadora de Roz ha diseñado y fabricado una serie de robots para hacer la vida de los humanos más fáciles y les ha encomendado la sencilla y amplia labor de ayudar a los seres humanos en cualquier tarea que les sea requerida. Pero allí radica el primer problema de Roz: en una isla en la que no hay seres humanos y por ende no hay nadie que pueda asignarle una tarea que cumplir, ¿qué sentido tiene que ella se quede?

Added to this is the fact that - at the beginning - Roz is unable to communicate with the animals, who of course see her as a threat, like a metallic monster whom they attack and from whom they flee, making her feel completely out of place, until, through those curious turns that life takes, is involved in an accident whose only survivor, an egg that later hatches into a small goose, becomes for her a task and then something more, because the little animal, called Brightbill, will see a mother figure in Roz and she must protect him and help him find his way.

A ello se suma el hecho de que - al inicio - Roz es incapaz de comunicarse con los animales, quienes por supuesto la ven como una amenaza, como un monstruo metálico a quien atacan y de quien huyen haciéndola sentir completamente fuera de lugar, hasta que, por esas curiosas vueltas que da la vida, se ve envuelta en un accidente cuyo único superviviente, un huevo que eclosiona luego en un pequeño ganso, se convierte para ella en una tarea y luego en algo más, pues el animalito, llamado Brightbill, verá en Roz una figura materna y ella deberá protegerlo y ayudarlo a encontrar su camino.

It's true that, deep down, no story is new. Everything has already been told and that's why there are so many stories that refer to others or to the same topic. Being analytical, Coco, Kung Fu Panda, and many other films are about self-discovery, that initiatory journey that leads us to understand and accept who we are. Nemo, fearful young fish with his happy fin is a symbol of inclusion; the tenderness of WALL-E and his commitment to a task for which he has been programmed is a critique of dehumanization and a call to attention to our relationship with the environment; the characters of Zootopia tell us about diversity, about how we all have a place within a society; Brave tells us, among other things, about family, the difficulty of motherhood and about those bonds that cannot be broken and that overcome any obstacle... and all these themes are present in The Wild Robot, but it's the mix of all of them and above all that complexity of the main character which makes this story something different from all those others. Roz begins the film as a robot programmed to fulfill tasks, that is, to obey, act and serve. But upon landing on the island, in a hostile and not at all domestic environment, she must learn to survive, to defend himself, to do things that were not on his agenda and to do so she must reprogram herself and learn, that is, adapt, to that new environment in which she lives. She will discover things that dont always make sense or that don't support cognitive analysis and will begin to develop the ability to feel.

Es cierto que, en el fondo, ninguna historia es nueva. Todo ha sido contado ya y por eso hay tantas historias que remiten a otras o a un mismo tema. Siendo analíticos, Coco, Kung Fu Panda, y muchas otras películas tratan sobre el auto descubrimiento, ese viaje iniciático que nos lleva a entender y aceptar quiénes somos. Nemo, joven temeroso con su aleta feliz es un símbolo de la inclusión; la ternura de WALL-E y su compromiso con una tarea para la que ha sido programado es una crítica a la deshumanización y un llamado de atención a nuestra relación con el medio ambiente; los personajes de Zootopia nos hablan de la diversidad, de cómo todos tenemos cabida dentro de una sociedad; Brave nos habla, entre otras cosas, de la familia, lo difícil de la maternidad y sobre esos lazos que no pueden romperse y que vencen cualquier obstáculo... y todos estos temas están presentes en The Wild Robot, pero es la mezcla de todos ellos y sobre todo esa complejidad del personaje principal lo que convierten esta historia en algo diferente a todas esas otras. Roz parte la película como una robot programada para cumplir tareas, es decir, para obedecer, actuar y servir. Pero al caer en la isla, en un medio hostil y nada doméstico, debe aprender a sobrevivir, a defenderse, a hacer cosas que no estaban en su agenda y para ello debe reprogramarse y aprender, es decir, adaptarse, a ese nuevo entorno en el que irá descubriendo cosas que no siempre tienen lógica o que no soportan un análisis cognitivo y comenzará a desarrollar la capacidad de sentir.

And it will make us feel too. The fear of a new mother, doubts about the unexpected, loneliness, confusion, anxiety, but also happiness, friendship, love, joy and pride. The film is a roller coaster of emotions, both for Roz and for us, and a journey that will take her to live extraordinary situations and that - like life itself - will provide her with valuable and painful lessons on which we can also give our opinion and reflect.

Y nos hará sentir a nosotros también. El temor de una madre primeriza, dudas ante lo inesperado, soledad, confusión, ansiedad, pero también felicidad, amistad, amor, alegría y orgullo. La película es una montaña rusa de emociones, tanto para Roz como para nosotros, y un viaje que la llevará a vivir situaciones extraordinarias y que - como la vida misma - le aportarán valiosas y dolorosas lecciones sobre las cuales nosotros también podemos opinar y reflexionar.

But above all, The Wild Robot is about finding our place in the world. Not that space in which we must fit like a piece in a puzzle, nor that emptiness that we must fill according to our programming, but that place to which our nature pushes us, a place that doesn't exist without us because we ourselves are the ones who build it. It's not about following the usual path, the path of all, but about doing something new because we are not those others, we are ourselves and it's our prerogative to defy the laws, the expectations and venture beyond, where our peers have not gone, where we are not supposed to go and where no one thought we would get to. Like all these animated productions of recent years, the film has a great cast (including Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor and Mark Hamill, among others), a script that alternates serene moments with other more moving ones, an emotional soundtrack, a central theme that touches every fiber of our being and a fairly balanced mix of adventure, emotion, melancholy, sadness, all revolving around a message as strong as simple and as trite as necessary: always be yourself. Fly like you and not like them. No one can live your life for you or like you and that is your super power. And other things like that. The truth is that it's too early to venture to talk about nominations and awards, but leaving that aside I do see The Wild Robot earning a place in the hearts of viewers and these revisiting this film again and again as those stories that leave a mark, have you already seen it? what did you think? Pero sobre todo, The Wild Robot se trata de encontrar nuestro lugar en el mundo. No ese espacio en el que debemos encajar como una pieza en un puzzle, ni ese vacío que debemos llenar según nuestra programación, sino ese lugar al que nuestra naturaleza nos empuja, un lugar que no existe sin nosotros porque somos nosotros mismos quienes lo construimos. No se trata de seguir el camino de siempre, el camino de todos, sino de hacer algo nuevo porque nosotros no somos esos otros, somos nosotros mismos y es nuestra prerrogativa desafiar las leyes, las expectativas y aventurarnos a ir más allá, a donde nuestros semejantes no han ido, a donde no se supone que vayamos y a donde nadie creyó que llegaríamos. Como todas estas producciones animadas de los últimos años, la película cuenta con un gran elenco (que Incluye a Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor y Mark Hamill, entre otros), un guión que alterna momentos serenos con otros más movidos, una banda sonora emotiva, un tema central que toca todas las fibras de nuestro ser y una mezcla bastante equilibrada de aventura, emotividad, melancolía, tristeza, todo girando alrededor de un mensaje tan fuerte como simple y tan trillado como necesario: sé siempre tú mismo. Vuela como tú y no como ellos. Nadie puede vivir tu vida por ti ni como tú y ese es tu super poder. Y otras cosas así por el estilo. La verdad es que es muy pronto para aventurarse a hablar de nominaciones y premios, pero dejando eso de lado sí veo a The Wild Robot ganándose un espacio en el corazón de los espectadores y a estos revisitando este film una y otra vez como esas historias que dejan huella, ¿ustedes ya la vieron? ¿qué les pareció?
