Some insights about Netflix’s Dune
It’s not often that I find a movie that will stay in my head for quite some time. It only happens whenever I watch a movie that has a story that makes me think deeply about it. SciFi is a genre that is on top of my list because it makes me imagine and be immersed in the picture. With the visual effects technology that we have right now, the realistic level of the scene and the effects can convince my imaginative mind to believe even for a brief moment.
A while ago, I watched a 2021 film called Dune on Netflix.
I’ve seen the trailer before but never really had the interest to watch it until today.
Usually, I judge a movie based on the cast and the lead actor/actress however I’m not familiar with any of the names in this cast so I mainly focused on the story. In this way, I removed my biased judgment about the movie. To give a little background about the story, it was an adaptation of a sci-fi 1965 novel by Frank Herbert.
The story tells the journey of Paul Atreides as his family took over the stewardship of the planet Arrakis and the harvesting of a precious chemical called Spice. His family’s acceptance of this venture has led to the death of his father which left him and his mother to join forces with the inhabitants of the planet called Fremen. He is looked up to as the messianic leader of the inhabitants and to lead them to victory over the so-called outsiders (House of Harkonnens) who are draining the Arrakis planet with its precious resources.
The aspect of the movie that made me captivated is the political and religious conflict that is prevailing in the movie. I seldom get interested in these kinds of topics but this movie is allowing me to think more about it. I can’t help but relate it with what’s happening about the international politics and religious issues that I’m hearing over the news. There are moments when I detach my thoughts from the movie and think about real-world events and try to comprehend whether this movie is about a specific topic or is just plainly telling fiction.
This movie is the first installment and I believe there will be a sequel. I guess it was hinted at the end when one of the lead characters said that it was just the beginning of the story.
Great movie, part 2 even better!
