Io capitano
On a journey to follow their dreams, Seydou and Moussa have to face the harsh realities of life at the age of 16. As they nurture the hope that their dream will come true, they are subjected to many tests and undergo an inner transformation.
They reflect their inner transformation to the audience with the movie originally titled Io capitano. I can say that the story of the movie was carefully selected from the very heart of life. It is a glimpse into the world of people who are classified as temporary immigrants by having to leave the land where they were born and raised for different reasons, which is a common problem of the world.
The journey that starts in Senegal and extends to Italy without authorization involves the physical and mental changes that our heroes, who are still children, undergo as their story unfolds. Each of them leaves their country for different reasons and sets sail to other countries in the hope of a better life, leading them to accept in advance being immigrants and being treated as second class in the country they arrive in.
For me, the most beautiful aspect and the most valuable teaching of the movie were the social messages given through the characters of Seydou and Moussa. Today, we may not have to migrate from one country to another, but we need to have a perspective on this issue and our empathy must be available. What if we were one of them, would we still have the opinions and prejudices we have today?
The fact that the life stories of the characters in Io capitano are presented from the very beginning makes the movie more valuable, because in such a dangerous journey, it is important to know the whys and hows of those who embark on the journey. In Seydou and Moussa's story, this is successfully addressed and reflected throughout the movie.
As the dangers of the journey increase, the reasons for embarking on the journey are devalued. It is emphasized that no dream is so precious that it requires risking one's life, but in some stories, the fact that not embarking on the journey is already life-threatening is ignored.
When I look at the narrative and the way the film is portrayed, I conclude that the performances of the actors are not important. Io capitano has a message to convey and this message is already clear enough through the two characters and the events that unfold around them.
Whatever the reason, stay in your country! Don't follow your dreams, don't travel between countries without authorization, don't fall into the traffickers' net! But what about the reasons why these people embarked on such a dangerous journey? Unfortunately, there is not the slightest crumb in the story of the movie!
Seydou Sarr as Seydou and Moustapha Fall as Moussa do a great job. I wish every reason for traveling was as clean as the dreams of these two young people, but the world we live in does not allow this cleanliness.
I highly recommend watching the movie Io capitano. Despite the lack of questioning about the motives in the story, the movie had a beautiful theme. I believe that no matter what your side is, there will definitely be teachings to take away from the movie.
