Munich

Steven Spielberg's 2005 film Munich seems to be indirectly, if not directly, connected to the events that are currently dominating the agenda.

In these days of intensified Israeli attacks on Gaza and mutual attacks by Palestinian radical groups, the Paris 2024 Olympic Flame was lit the day before and will not be extinguished until August 11th. There will be those who will ask how these two contradictory events can be connected to the movie Munich, but wait a little longer or do your own historical research on the subject...

...personally, I can also recommend watching the movie Munich instead of doing research because the movie has a very objective point of view! For those who don't know enough or don't remember the history, let's not make them wait too long.

The movie is about the story of the Israeli athletes who were first taken prisoner by the organization called Black September during the 1972 Munich Olympics, then killed after the clashes that broke out, and the story of the execution of those responsible by 5 men assigned by Israel.

The first thing that came to my mind while watching Munich was the differences between what illegal terrorist organizations do and what legal states do. I think the most important feature that distinguishes illegal organizations from legal states is that states have laws. Whatever the reasons and circumstances, crimes committed should be punished with the decisions to be taken after trials by impartial courts.

Execution without trial is no different from terrorism, no matter who the perpetrator is. The producers, scriptwriter, director and actors of Munich deserve a lot of praise for their impartiality.

It is unacceptable to consider oneself superior and to take away the right to life of others. The movie is full of many such interrogations and what I liked the most in the movie were the moments when those who were assigned with nationalist sentiments and carried out their duties questioned what they were doing. You can feel the consolation of those who admit their mistakes, punish themselves in a way and regret what they did for the rest of their lives.

Maybe nothing can be done for those who lost their lives, but there is a lot that can be done for those who are in danger of losing their lives in the future. The saddest part is that despite all the years that have passed, the parties have not learned their lessons and continue to perpetuate terrorism both by the organization and the state.

I hope that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be a process where competition will be at the highest level and the doors to lasting peace will be opened wide. There is no excuse for killing! The easy thing is to fight, the hard thing is to make peace and keep it lasting.

Whatever your political or life view, whatever you believe in, I strongly recommend you to watch the movie Munich. It is strange that human beings do not draw boundaries for themselves in terms of segregation and marginalization, whereas we draw boundaries for many things and imprison those who supposedly defend freedom.

However, from space, there are no borders anywhere in the world! In the hope of peace between Israel and Palestine, in memory of all the innocent people who lost their lives in the 1972 Olympic Games and its aftermath!

Thank you for being here and for reading. Have a good weekend, take care, goodbye!
