Significant Other - Forget the alien, the Pacific Northwest is amazing
Released in 2022, Significant Other heralded the birth of a new kind of alien. While I liked the plot of the movie, I can say that I found the performances of the actors successful. However, the impression that something is missing in the movie and that something is wrong is created in a meaningless way.
It is not difficult to understand that the deficiency in question stems from the script. I can say that a very beautiful subject, in a location that I thought was magnificent, was frankly wasted. After watching the movie for a short while, predicting what will happen and knowing with certainty that the prediction will come true almost destroys the pleasure of watching the movie.
When the pleasure of watching is lost, the spectacular natural scenery or the successful performances of the actors who give life to the characters unfortunately cannot prevent the movie from going badly. The weakness of the script and the depth of the gaps created remain in the mind. In such a situation, it is of course questionable to continue watching the movie, the explanation for this may vary for everyone, but for me it is the eagerness to finish what I started and the expectation that the movie will evolve to a different place after a certain point.
Camping and hiking in the spectacular scenery of the Pacific Northwest were the most enjoyable moments of the movie. I can say that the location chosen for the filming of the movie added a lot of tension and mystery that the script could not add to the movie. The way the movie reflected the tension in every scene set in the woods was entirely due to the actors and the location. Despite the missing parts of the story, the refreshingly fresh nature view was worth seeing.
I think it was an advantage that almost all of the movie takes place between only two actors in such a well-chosen location. I also think that the director used this advantage well up to a point. The parts that I think are missing and that the story doesn't connect to a point start with the alien figure that is tried to be created.
If instead of aliens, the movie had turned into a human struggle against nature, maybe it would have been the best movie I have ever seen in this genre. The most important reason for this would definitely be the unique view of the Pacific Northwest.
The only mystery scene in Significant Other was the uncertainty of which of the two characters was possessed by the aliens. Once the uncertainty is removed, you have already seen the end of the movie before you even watch it.
I found Ruth to be the most successful of the characters of Ruth and Harry, who are in love with each other and go camping in the Pacific Northwest. Maika Monroe successfully represented the character of Ruth with her every behavior during the reluctant journey. Throughout the story, I had no trouble guessing the next scene of the movie and she managed to mislead me in one scene. Her strong stance in the jungle proved that human beings will not be inexperienced in adapting to the harsh environment.
If your expectation is to watch a sci-fi movie, don't waste your time. If you think that you can endure every event that takes place in the company of a wonderful natural scenery, you can watch Significant Other. It will meet your expectations in terms of nature and actor performance. Nevertheless, watch it without raising your expectations too high or ignore the movie. Thanks for being here and reading.
