The Wretched
The Wretched, one of the productions that broke the audience record during the covid period, reflects the tension and fear to the audience in the mood of a youth movie. The production, which conveys what happens in a small coastal town during the summer vacation as a youth movie and then turns into a thriller-horror genre, becomes enjoyable to watch.
I can say that suspense and horror are handled in a different way and successfully reflected to the audience through the young people who spend their summer vacation. In general terms, I cannot say that the movie is a masterpiece or a production that deserves the records it has broken, but I can say that it is enjoyable to watch.
The presence of spoiled and troubled teenagers with their parents, which is often seen in youth movies, continues in The Wretched, but let me tell you right away; the story does not progress in the usual way. Ben (played by John Paul Howard), whose parents are separated, comes to the coastal town where his father lives to spend the summer vacation. In need of discipline, the character is put to work by his father at the marina.
The character Ben and the events that unfold around him form the main story of The Wretched. John Paul Howard successfully portrays the rebellious and troubled young man. From the moment the character adapts to his surroundings, he moves to a new dimension, which can be interpreted as the success of both the actor and the movie.
Regardless of the director, screenwriter or cast of the movie, I can say that I liked the way the story was presented differently at the beginning and then changed and reflected the horror-thriller.
If you can imagine the fear and panic that the passengers, including the driver, feel when the vehicle, which has been traveling on a straight road for a while, suddenly switches to a bumpy road, I can say that the movie progresses with similar emotions from the halfway point. Of course, what we experience as viewers is not life-threatening, but I gave such an example to make the increase in the excitement dose more understandable.
There are a few gaps at the end of the movie's story, but these are presented as hints that there will be a new sequel instead of spoiling the story of the movie. Therefore, it doesn't disturb the audience in the story flow, on the contrary, it makes them curious. What I was most curious about was the lack of an answer to the question of what happened to the little baby!
With its twist ending, I highly recommend watching The Wretched. The movie is ideal for those who have a few hours to spare and the story was satisfying enough. The fluidity and the way the tension was handled in the atmosphere created was successful.
