Hey guys! It’s my first time posting here and I’ll be giving a movie review on "The Woman King" and honestly, this film just gets better every time I watch it!
I'm watching it for the third time since its release, and I'm still reeling from the experience.
The first time I watched it, I was celebrating my 22nd birthday and my friends suggested that we go to the movies. This film caught my eye and since I was the MVP for the day, my choice was the accepted one. Trust me, I didn’t regret it a single bit.

THE PLOT

So, this movie was set in the 1800s in the Kingdom of Dahomey. The movie is all about the female army of warriors, known as the Agojie, who are basically the most fierce and of course the feared fighters in the whole land.

The story followed Nanisca (Viola Davis)the general of the Agojie, who was still struggling with past traumas. She was like, the first class warrior, but she also suffered serious emotional scars.

The movie also portrays Nawi (Thuso Mbedu). She is a young girl who was forced to join the Agojie after she was rejected by her own family. Her only language was defying tradition and pushing boundaries.

One problem the Agojie faced was the threat of the Oyo Empire and the European colonizers. Nanisca and Nawi knew that they had to navigate their complicated pasts and fight their own demons in order to protect their kingdom and their people.

The movie really had great epic battle scenes with stunning visuals; including mind blowing performances.

MY REVIEW

Can I even describe Nawi’s bravery?! Viola Davis's portrayal of Nanisca is so incredible, but Thuso Mbedu's Nawi is the real MVP. Her character’s development from a very rebellious young girl to a fierce warrior is literally the highlight for me. That scene where she stands up to the elders and refuses to marry? CHILLS. EVERY. TIME.

But you know, what really stood out to me this time around was Nanisca's vulnerability. Viola Davis brought so much depth to her character, and it was so heartbreaking to see Nanisca struggle with her past traumas.
The scene where she opens up to Nawi about her scars? I literally cried out my eyes!

The entire cast, though, was so phenomenal. Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and Adrienne Warren all delivered standout performances, I must say. I can not try to not remember the stunning cinematography and epic battle scenes!

What I love the most about "The Woman King" is the unapologetic celebration of Black womanhood. The film is a proof of the strength, resilience, determination and beauty of African women, and if you’re looking for a movie, that will leave you feeling inspired and empowered , then this film is for you.

So, if you haven't seen "The Woman King" yet, what are you even doing with your life my dear? Trust me, you won't regret it. And if you have seen it, a big thumbs up for your good eyes.
