Films que Inspiran/Maudie, el color de la vida [ESP-ENG]

Uno de los géneros del cine que más me gusta es el biopic, esas historias de vida reales llevadas a la pantalla por lo general son conmovedoras y nos narran la historia de alguien que con su esfuerzo y centrado en sus talentos logra destacarse en el mundo, convirtiéndose de esta manera en un ejemplo de superación, a pesar de las circunstancias adversas que la rodean.

La comunidad @holos-lotus en el marco de la celebración del Día Mundial del Cine nos invita al concurso Films que Inspiran, y aunque mi entrada no participa en el concurso igual me siento motivada para comentar una película que vi hace unos meses y que me dejó días pensando en la vida de Maud Lewis, Aquí les comento.

Maud nace en Canadá a comienzos del siglo pasado, en el año 1903, si la ubicamos en contexto recordemos que aún no existían, en papel, los derechos humanos universales y mucho menos los derechos de la mujer y para quien tenía una discapacidad física el mundo no era muy fácil.

La película nos relata la vida de Maud ya adulta, cuando el hermano, que hereda la casa familiar, la lleva a vivir con una tía en un pueblo, sacándola de su mundo conocido, dejándola indefensa, sin recursos y con muy pocas posibilidades de valerse por sí misma debido a una artritis deformante que le dificulta el caminar y trabajar con sus manos, porque a Maud le gustaba pintar y era un arte que su mamá desde niña la había estimulado hacer.

Sin embargo, no conforme con su “suerte” ve la oportunidad de un trabajo, cuidando y sirviendo a un pescador de la zona con quien se casa tiempo después y de quien, en muchas oportunidades, recibe maltrato físico y psicológico, aunque con el correr del tiempo también le da apoyo para el desarrollo de su talento, la pintura.

¿En qué es lo que me dejó pensando este film? En primer lugar, la persistencia y resiliencia de esta artista llamada Maud Lewis. Con una dificultad notable para caminar, aunado al dolor que le producía no se sentía enferma ni incapacitada, muy por el contrario, con tenacidad se lanzaba unas caminatas (no con mentalidad fitness, sino por necesidad) con coraje y voluntad.

Con gran determinación aprendió a poner límites, aunque eso significara salir de su zona de confort y sentir que tenía que comenzar de nuevo. En el momento que lo consideró necesario e importante, buscó ayuda y apoyo en alguien que consideraba su amiga y lo encontró.

Ante el dolor y la tristeza encontró en la pintura un canal para expresarse, pero no desde esas emociones sino desde la alegría que da el color, sus obras que entraría en lo que hoy llamaríamos pintura ingenua, destaca por su simplicidad, por ver con ojos de alegría lo que la rodea y de esta manera va llenando su mundo de imágenes cotidianas cargadas de vida.

Todos tenemos una luz interior que nos permite iluminar nuestro mundo, si algo me ha dejado esta película es comprender de manera más amplia, que no importa cuán oscuro sea el exterior, si alimentas tu luz, brillas para ti y para los demás.

One of the genres of cinema that I like the most is the biopic, those real life stories brought to the screen are usually moving and tell us the story of someone who with her effort and focused on her talents manages to stand out in the world, thus becoming an example of overcoming, despite the adverse circumstances that surround her.

The community @holos-lotus in the framework of the celebration of World Cinema Day invites us to the contest Films que Inspiran, and although my entry does not participate in the contest I still feel motivated to comment on a film I saw a few months ago and that left me thinking about the life of Maud Lewis, Here I comment.

Maud was born in Canada at the beginning of the last century, in the year 1903, if we place her in context we remember that universal human rights and much less women's rights did not yet exist on paper, and for those who had a physical disability the world was not very easy.

The film tells the story of Maud's life as an adult, when her brother, who inherits the family home, takes her to live with an aunt in a village, taking her away from her familiar world, leaving her helpless, without resources and with very few possibilities to fend for herself due to a deforming arthritis that makes it difficult for her to walk and work with her hands. Because Maud liked to paint and it was an art that her mother had encouraged her to do since she was a child.

However, not satisfied with her “luck”, she saw the opportunity of a job, taking care of and serving a local fisherman whom she married some time later and from whom, on many occasions, she received physical and psychological abuse, although as time went by he also gave her support for the development of her talent, painting.

What did this film leave me thinking about? First of all, the persistence and resilience of this artist named Maud Lewis. With a remarkable difficulty in walking, coupled with the pain it caused her, she did not feel sick or disabled, on the contrary, with tenacity she took walks (not with a fitness mentality, but out of necessity) with courage and will.

With great determination, she learned to set limits, even if it meant stepping out of her comfort zone and feeling she had to start all over again. At the moment she felt it necessary and important she sought help, support from someone she considered her friend and she found it.

Faced with pain and sadness she found in painting a channel to express herself, but not from those emotions but from the joy that gives color, her works that would enter into what today we would call naive painting, stands out for its simplicity, to see with eyes of joy what surrounds her and in this way she fills her world with everyday images full of life.

We all have an inner light that allows us to illuminate our world. If this film has left me with anything, it is to understand in a broader way, that no matter how dark the outside is, if you feed your light, you shine for yourself and for others.
