Hay series de las que todo el mundo se enamora, los motivos pueden ser muchos, entre ellos podemos listar que los temas que abordan son enfocados de manera novedosa, por sus efectos especiales, porque las actuaciones y los diálogos los consideras excepcionales o sencillamente porque presenta una cotidianidad con la que te identificas.

Esta última razón es lo que ha hecho que me entusiasme con la serie La maravillosa señora Maisel, de la cual no tenía ninguna referencia y que la conseguí bajo el rótulo las mejores series de comedias del 2023, que este año cerró con la quinta temporada. Por lo pronto voy a comentar los cuatro capítulos de la primera temporada que son los que he visto, aquí mis primeras impresiones.

Contexto

La serie abre con la boda de una joven pareja, la novia está contando anécdotas del noviazgo y los detalles en la preparación de la celebración. Son una pareja alegre, chispeantes, que en mínimos flashback, nos muestran que están desbordados en sensualidad y sexualidad, llenando la escena de delicado humor pues la chica está diciendo algo con picardía y pensando en esos momentos íntimos.

El tiempo en estos primeros capítulos pasa velozmente, cuando acuerda han transcurrido cuatro años, la pareja tiene dos niños, el trabaja en una empresa familiar y ella dedicada a las labores del hogar. El joven tiene un pasatiempo que ambos disfrutan mucho, presentarse como comediante en un bar de la ciudad, actividad que realizan una vez a la semana, ella se encarga de acomodarle el horario de la presentación y tomar nota de sus ocurrencias.

En una de estas presentaciones, Miriam o Midge como le dicen, descubre que Joel se copia los guiones de otros comediante, cuando ella le plantea su falta de originalidad él le resta importancia al asunto, ella insiste, el trata de hacer algo distinto pero todo resulta en fracaso, esa noche el decide dejarla, declarándole que tiene una relación con su secretaria.

Con qué conecto

Hasta ahora lo que les he relatado no tiene nada de novedoso, sin embargo, desde el primer momento quedé encantada pues la serie está ambientada a finales de los años 50 y comienzo de los 60, una época que no solo me resulta hermosa por todos los cambios que ella trajo sino que además puedo decir con propiedad “Yo estuve allí”.

Mientras veo el vestuario, la iluminación de los espacios, el decorado de los apartamentos, los muebles, los autos y hasta los modelos de mesitas de las cafeterías me resultan familiares, ciertamente no con esa opulencia pero es la esencia de la época, recreada muy bien con tantos detalles. Entre estos detalles creados se encuentra la iluminación que tiende a amarillo acentuando el aroma de la época que conjugado con la música, las voces, ritmos y géneros distintivos hacen un cuadro perfecto y armonioso de los años 60.

Cuando veo a la protagonista con su bella figura estilizada su cintura de avispa y siguiendo unos rituales de belleza, entre sonrisas evoco a una tía que en esos años tendría 20 y vivía con nosotros, ella dormía con una cinta super ajustada para sacarse cintura, con unos libros sobre el estómago para que no le saliera pancita, caminaba el apartamento con un libro sobre la cabeza para mantenerse erguida y así otros tantos trucos que quizás dieron origen a ese famoso dicho de que para ser bella hay que ver estrellas.

Más allá de todos estos elementos, que me deleito en ellos, se encuentran los aspectos más internos que definen la cultura de este momento histórico, por ejemplo, la mujer y su rol social.

En el caso de nuestra protagonista, la maravillosa Miriam que es una mujer desenvuelta y ocurrente, proveniente de una familia conservadora va rompiendo los esquemas establecidos, no está casada con el drama, aún cuando el mundo se le voltea completamente con la separación matrimonial ya se encuentra buscando que va a hacer y es contención para sus padres.

Padres, suegros, amigas confían en que Joel regresará, incluso el padre la manda a que se vista bonito, se arregle y vaya a buscarlo. Es interesante porque Joel si regresa y ella le dice que no, pero lo mejor es cuando su papá le reafirma que el volverá ella le dice que ya lo hizo, él sorprendido no entiende por qué ella no lo aceptó, a su respuesta él se queda pensando y en su rostro aflora como un leve sonrisa de orgullo por su hija, algo así como respetar su dignidad.

Miriam tiene un talento que ni ella misma se conocía, una persona no muy cercana se lo se o descubre y juntas comienzan a trabajar en ello, ambas lo ven como una oportunidad que se les abre y están dispuestas a hacer lo necesario para que esa idea que esta germinando se convierta en un proyecto y obtener los mejores resultados.

Es un talento que también le sirve de escape emocional pues a través de él se ríe de sus vivencias como esposa abandonada, de unos padres llenos de prejuicios, de unos hijos un poco extraños, de una vida muy light y si se quiere superflua a ser responsable de ella.

En fin, La maravillosa señora Maisel, es una serie que promete hacernos pasar un buen rato de disfrute, recrear un periodo histórico que marcó cambios importantes en la manera como vemos el mundo y nos movemos en él y por si fuese poco una visión al mundo interior de la mujer. Todo un banquete que no te puedes perder.

What I connect with

So far what I have told you is nothing new, however, from the first moment I was enchanted because the series is set in the late 50's and early 60's, an era that is not only beautiful to me because of all the changes it brought but I can also say with propriety "I was there".

As I watch the costumes, the lighting of the spaces, the decor of the apartments, the furniture, the cars and even the coffee table models are familiar to me, certainly not with that opulence but it is the essence of the era, recreated very well with so many details. Among these created details is the lighting that tends to yellow accentuating the scent of the era that combined with the music, voices, rhythms and distinctive genres make a perfect and harmonious picture of the 60s.

When I see the protagonist with her beautiful stylized figure, her wasp waist and following beauty rituals, between smiles I evoke an aunt who in those years would have been 20 and lived with us, she slept with a super tight belt to take off her waist, with some books on her stomach so she wouldn't get a tummy, she walked the apartment with a book on her head to stay upright and so many other tricks that perhaps gave rise to the famous saying that to be beautiful you have to see stars.

Beyond all these elements, which I delight in, there are the more internal aspects that define the culture of this historical moment, for example, women and their social role.

In the case of our protagonist, the wonderful Miriam, who is an easy-going and witty woman, coming from a conservative family, she is breaking the established patterns, she is not married to the drama, even when the world turns completely upside down with the separation of her marriage, she is already looking for what she is going to do and is contention for her parents.

Parents, in-laws, friends trust that Joel will return, even the father sends her to dress up and go look for him. It is interesting because Joel does come back and she tells him no, but the best part is when her father reaffirms that he will come back, she tells him that he already did, he is surprised and does not understand why she did not accept it, he remains thinking about her answer and on his face a slight smile of pride for his daughter appears, something like respecting her dignity.

Miriam has a talent that even she did not know herself, a person not very close to her discovers it and together they begin to work on it, both see it as an opportunity that opens up and are willing to do whatever is necessary for this idea that is germinating to become a project and get the best results.

It is a talent that also serves as an emotional escape, because through it she laughs at her experiences as an abandoned wife, of parents full of prejudices, of children a little strange, of a very light life and if you want to be superfluous to be responsible for it.

In short, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is a series that promises to make us spend a good time of enjoyment, recreate a historical period that marked important changes in the way we see the world and move in it and as if that were not enough a vision to the inner world of women. A feast not to be missed.
