If Movie Review: Reconnecting with your inner child [ENG/SPA]

After a suggestion from my little daughter to watch a movie together, we started looking for something new to watch, that's how we found If or Imaginary Friends. I knew about the movie's existence, but seeing that Ryan Reynolds was the star, I assumed it wasn't a children's movie. I thought it was like the movie Ted, but given my little girl's insistence on the animated characters on the cover, I did some research and found out that it is indeed okay to watch with children, but its theme may be a bit difficult for the little ones to grasp.

Tras una propuesta de mi pequeña hija para ver juntos una película, comenzamos a buscar algo nuevo que ver, fue así como encontramos If o Amigos Imaginarios, sabía de la existencia de la película pero al ver que Ryan Reynolds era su protagonista asumi que no era una película infantil, supuse que era como la película Ted, pero ante la insistencia de mi pequeña por los personajes animados que se ven en la portada, investigue y efectivamente si se puede ver con niños, pero su tema puede resultar algo difícil de asimilar para los pequeños de la casa.

The movie tells the story of a 12-year-old girl named Elizabeth, but everyone calls her "Bea". Although the movie doesn't say when or why, the happy life she had with her parents ended due to her mother's death, and now her father is going through an illness that has him hospitalized and needs surgery, so she lives with her grandmother while her father recovers.

La película cuenta la historia de una niña de 12 años llamada Elizabeth pero que todos le dicen "Bea". Aunque la película no dice en que momento y porque, la vida feliz que tenía junto a sus padres se acabo debido a la muerte de su mamá, y ahora su padre está atravesando por una enfermedad que le tiene hospitalizado y debe ser operado, por lo tanto vive con su abuela mientras su padre se recupera.

Her father, played by John Krasinski who is also the director of the movie, does everything he can to cheer his daughter up by maintaining a positive attitude in the face of this adversity, using humor and fun. However, Bea, still grieving her mother's death in the midst of her transition from child to teenager, doesn't let herself be carried away by her father's humorous actions, because she also fears that he will die too, so she doesn't want to be seen as a child.

Su padre, interpretado por John Krasinski que también es el director de la película, hace todo el esfuerzo por alegrar a su hija sosteniendo una actitud positiva ante esta adversidad, utilizado el humor y la diversion, pero Bea aun dolida por la muerte de su madre en medio de su transición de niña a adolescente, no se deja llevar por las acciones humorísticas de su padre, porque además teme que este tambien muera, por eso no quiere que la vean como una niña.

Bea has an experience while buying a charger to turn on the camera that her parents used to record videos during her childhood, she thinks she sees a strange creature heading to the same building where she lives but can't catch up with it. Later, she sees the creature again but this time the encounter is complete and she meets a man named Calvin. Bea learns that both she and Cal are able to see imaginary friends also known as IFs.

Bea tiene una experiencia mientras compra un cargador para encender la cámara con la que sus padres grababan videos durante su niñez, cree ver una criatura extraña que se dirige al mismo edificio donde ella vive pero no logra alcanzarla, posteriormente vuelve a ver la criatura pero esta vez el encuentro se completa y llega a conocer a un hombre llamado Calvin. Bea se entera que tanto ella como Cal son capaces de ver amigos imaginarios conocidos también como AMI.

The relationship between Cal and Bea becomes close when they join forces to help forgotten imaginary friends, so that they can find new children to accompany them because that is their purpose. From then on, the plot unfolds around helping IFs find a new child or the adults who were once their children to see them again.

La relación entre Cal y Bea se hace cercana cuando juntos unen fuerzas para ayudar a los amigos imaginarios que han sido olvidados por los niños que crecieron, para que encuentren nuevos niños que acompañar porque ese es su propósito. Desde ese momento en adelante la trama se desarrolla en torno a ayudar a que los AMI encuentren un nuevo niño o los adultos que alguna vez fueron sus niños puedan verlos de nuevo.

The movie is great in terms of animation and in terms of story I think it tries to give a deep message, it seems like a movie made for children but many of its dialogues and scenes are understood as an adult, the curious thing is that precisely the movie tells the transition of a child who passes into an adult life leaving aside what characterizes him to face new challenges and facets.

La película en cuanto animación es genial y en cuanto a historia creo que pretende dar un mensaje profundo, parece una película hecha para niños pero que muchos de sus diálogos y escenas se comprenden siendo un adulto, lo curioso es que precisamente la película relata la transición de un niño que pasa a una vida de adulto dejando a un lado aquello que le caracteriza para enfrentar nuevos desafíos y facetas.

I think the movie seeks to address the theme that no matter the age, the human being can connect with his childish side when he needs it, Bea at 12 years old put it aside thinking that it should be like that because circumstances forced her to, the opposite case of her father who was motivated by adversity to behave with the humor of a child, and in the middle of all this the imaginary friends who represent the ideal of the children who create them.

Creo que la película busca abordar el tema de que no importa la edad, el ser humano puede conectar con su lado infantil cuando lo necesite, Bea a sus 12 años lo hizo a un lado pensando que debia ser asi porque las circunstancias le obligaron, caso opuesto a su padre a quien las adversidades le motivaban a comportarse con el humor de un niño, y en medio de todo esto los amigos imaginarios que representan el ideal del niños que los crea.

The interesting thing about this perspective that I share with you is that it is my vision as an adult, I can after analyzing the plot conclude that that is what it is about, but when I see my little daughter enjoying the movie and asking her what she liked the most, answering me: the IFs, it makes me think that it is very well done because it can reach its entire audience of different ages, they know that children will see it with their parents in most cases.

Lo interesante de esta perspectiva que les comparto es que se trata de mi vision como adulto, puedo luego de analizar la trama concluir que de eso se trata, pero al ver a mi pequeña hija disfrutar la película y preguntarle que es lo que mas le gusto, respondiéndome: los AMI, me hace pensar que esta muy bien hecha porque puede llegar a toda su audiencia de diferentes edades, saben que los niños la verán junto a su padres en la mayoría de los casos.

You might think that its plot is complex, dealing with the transition from childhood to adulthood, but the truth is not at all. I think it seeks a middle ground so as not to make it so incomprehensible to the children who watch it, which also makes it somewhat predictable, with characters that don't shine, even Ryan Reynolds himself as the protagonist feels absent at times, but in the end it fulfills the objective of entertaining and touching some emotional fibers to the point of making the most sensitive cry.

Puedes llegar a pensar que su trama es compleja, al tratar la transición de la niñez a la adultez, pero la verdad no es para nada así, me parece que busca un punto medio para no hacerla tan incomprensible a los niños que la vean, eso la hace también un tanto predecible, con personajes que no brillan, incluso el mismo Ryan Reynolds como protagonista se siente por momentos ausente, pero al final cumple con el objetivo de entretener y tocar algunas fibras emocionales al punto de hacer llorar a los mas sensibles.
